a. When we met Saul of Tarsus in Section 2, what was he doing?

He was holding the coats of the executioners who were stoning St. Stephen

b. Summarize Sauls experience with the Risen Jesus and his conversion experience.

En route to Damascus Saul met the Risen Lord. He was hit with a powerful light and
that knocked him to the ground. Saul was met by the voice of Jesus who said to him,
Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting. But
get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do. After this encounter
and with prayer and reflection, Saul realizes that persecuting followers of Christ, is in
turn persecuting Christ Himself. Christs presence exists in His followers and after this
encounter the light existed in Saul himself.

c. What does St. Paul mean when he talks about the Mystical Body of Christ?

What he means is that every member of the church united with christ forms the
mystical body of christ, which is another word for church.

d. What did St. Paul and his companions learn after their first journey?

Paul on his first journey learned that the power of grace, the value of charity, and
how our faithfulness to the Church, will bring us closer to God on our spiritual
journeys. Also Paul stated that he is a supporter of circumcision as a way to enter
into a covenant with god, Paul acknowledges that the covenant is not just between
christ and Abraham, but with christ and all of his followers. In addition, baptism is a
way that all people are able to enter into a loving relationship with God.

e. Describe the events of the Council of Jerusalem.

Council members met at this meeting in jerusalem and the fathers of this council tried
to answer the two questions of 1.) Do Gentiles need to convert to Judaism first and
practice Jewish customs and rituals before being given the permission to enter into
Christianity? And 2.) Does baptism and the belief in Jesus become the sole criteria to
become members of the Church? it was clear the belief of the Church was that
Gentiles need not adhere to the Jewish Law in order to become Christian. The decision
made encouraged St. Paul to continue his missionary work, baptizing everyone in the
name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit

f. What was Pauls second journey like?

On Pauls second journey he was joined by Silas, and Timothy and afterwards Luke. He
and his companions traveled to the european city of philippi, this city became the first city
were the good news was heard and accepted. Then Paul was accepted by the Gentile
community in Thessalonica and was accused of treason and needed to be smuggled out
during the night. Last Paul visited the city Corinth were in a short time stayed witnessed a
large Christian community grow.

g. What was Pauls third journey like?

On Pauls third journey he went to the region of Galatia were the general population of
men resorted to the sins of the flesh and other actions that defined the teachings of
Christ. There Paul used his story to preach to the gentile community in that city and
received numerous conversions and baptisms. Then Paul went o to Ephesus where he
met pagan worshipers. He reprimanded their sinful behaviors which included the idol of
false Gods and supporting the use of magic by silversmiths pseudo - wizards to please
their gods.
h. Explain the details regarding St. Pauls martyrdom.

Paul is captured and imprisoned on his last trip to Rome, by the Grace of God Paul
had escaped every time he was captured, but not this time because Nero was
successful in his law to behead Paul. Paul was spared crucifixion because he was a
Roman citizen.

a. What makes someone an Apostolic Father?

To be an Apostolic Father you have to be a man who was taught be the apostles who in
turn taught the next generation of Christians.

b. What was the Didache?

The Didache which was one of the earliest Catechisms in Church History and
believed to be from the time of the Apostles, teaches Christians how to live and
also how to celebrate their faith in the Sacraments and other rituals

a. What makes St. Clement of Rome an Apostolic Father?

What makes St. Clement of Rome an Apostolic Father is he was converted by St.Paul
on one of his missionary trips were he met up with St. Barnabas. He worked in
communities that the Apostles established, and also had taken missionary trips with St.
Luke and was ordained as a bishop by St. Peter. He would go on to become the fourth
pope.

b. What was St. Clements impact on the early Church?

Clements impact on the Church started when the church community split into
opposing factions and clement attempted to unite both sides to usher peace. Also
he stressed the importance of priests and bishops as representatives of authority in
the Church. He stated the importance of grace of virginity, and In his writings,
Clement defended the Churchs truth in the face of heresy that was forming called
Gnosticism. This denies that Jesus Christ had a human nature at all.

c. What does the Basilica of San Clemente teach us about the development of the early
Church?

Early in the church, Christianity was illegal and Christians were not safe to worship and
express their faith. To celebrate Mass, many Christians sought refuge in the catacombs,
the catacombs were not the only place Christians met to worship. Many Christians who
owned homes would open them to the Christian community of the city for worship.
Rooms were changed to worship spaces, baptismal rooms were created, and alters were
installed so Christians could celebrate the Sacraments in privacy. The Basilica of San
Clemente showcases the two thousand years of tradition that exists in Rome.

a. What role has martyrdom played in the Churchs history so far?

Martyrdom has been used as a symbol for our love of God. The people who we
have read about this year in church history who have been martyred have died for
their love and faith of God. These people have sacrificed themselves because
they were unwilling to deny God in their lives at the face of death, and are the
ultimate believers of God.

b. What does Ignatius mean by catholic?

When he says this he is referring to the universality of the Catholic Faith

c. What messages did Ignatius letters contain?

The messages that ignatius' letters contained played a role in maintaining the
hierarchy of the Church and how it was imperative for the bishops to preserve the
teachings of Christ. In addition, he spoke about supporting the Incarnation, Passion,
Death, and Resurrection of Christ, which are the core values of the church.

d. What is the significance of the pallium?

The significance of the pallium is it is a symbol of the bishop
