CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.

Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.

1. Establish Goal
a. At the end of the lesson, On a Venn diagram, students will be able to correctly
recount and describe the differences between the two main characters in the 2
stories I will have read to them.
2. Proof of Understanding
a. Evidence of student understanding will be seen in the detailed description of the
two character on a Venn diagram. Students will be making a booklet with a pocket
for descriptive words in each. For personality, setting, outcome, appearance. Proof
of understanding will also be obtained in the questions that I ask them pertaining
to the events that happened in both stories.
3. Instruction
a. Day 1- I will introduce the first lesson by reading the first book of the two, The
Gingerbread Man by Jim Aylesworth. I would pause throughout the book to
discuss what we can infer from the pictures. Drawing detail into the illustrations,
such as the setting, the appearance, and the different characters. A smart board or
parchment paper would be utilized to write the main characters and the different
settings, also include their personality traits. We would then proceed to go to our
desks where there would be a worksheet. They would have to fill in the
corresponding information for example they would fill in for the characters
mentioned, the setting and the ending. But it would be focused on the gingerbread
man.
b. Day 2- I would regroup them and review what was discussed in the previous
lesson. I would ask for recounts of the story and what happened maybe even ask
what was the lesson. I would then introduce the second book The Gingerbread
Girl by Stephen King. After reading the story, we would then proceed to talk
about the characters and what we learned. Students would then fill out the same
worksheet from the previous lesson but this time fill it out with the information
from the new books main character, gingerbread girl.
c. Day 3- I would have the students help me summarize the first book and all the
characters, setting and story pot. Then we would discuss the second book as well.
They would describe all the key points to the story. They would then have to
make a Venn diagram foldable in which they compare and contrast the two main
characters.

Retell stories, including key details, and demonstrate understanding of their central
message or lesson.
1. Establish Goal
a. Students will be able to recount what happened in a book as well as clearly
support their reasoning through their writing on construction paper. Work will be

presented to the class in the form of a foldable. Book or text will be chosen out of
a cup with 5 strips of paper with the name of a book inside. The groups should be
small.
2. Proof of Understanding
a. Proof of understanding will be evident on the key details of their story in the
foldable. Proof of understanding will also be obtained in the questions that they
answer throughout the lesson.
3. Instruction
a. Day 1- I would open the lesson by reviewing what main idea means. I would then
proceed to have the children be put into 5 groups, then draw their book. They
would then proceed to read the book in their groups. There will be enough for
each of them. They would then have a few minutes to talk about the characters,
talk about the setting and what the book was about.
b. Day 2- I would review and have them on the carpet reviewing what their book is
about and share with the class a broad overview of the different characters. They
would then start writing down the different characters and the main points that
they believe were important.
c. Day 3- they would then start working on their foldable. The foldable would need
to have four flaps. The flaps would each be presented to the class. The students
would be trying to convince the classroom to read the story.
