The CRIES Neonatal Postoperative Pain Management

Scale is a new term for me. I did not know that there was
a special scale for the Neonatal child. This will be so
important when assessing a very young child.

I = increased vital signs, E = expression, S =
Sleeplessness
Each area is rated form 0 to 2
Knowing how to score this is very important. and
example of scoring is the a baby who is crying and is
inconsolable is rated a 2, Oxygen > 30% is a 1, Baseline
heart rate or blood pressure < 20% of baseline is a 1,
Expression a grimace alone is pressent 1 Sleep, the infant
has been awake consistantly is a 2.
The CRIES scale is a total of 7, According to CRIES this
infant would need to be in pain and need pain
intervention.

In the unit regarding pain management in children, there

was a lot of information regarding assess children for
pain, and how to management. I found it very intersting
how the diffrent pain assessment tools are used and how
they relate to the child s age. As we have studied in
other courses, we always ask on a scale of 1 to 10 how
bad a patients pain is and the patient rates their pain.

It is also important to understand that pain management
varys based on the patients age and the type of pain that
the child has. Different types of pain management are
nonphamacologic and pharmacologic pain relief.

Prficiency - Good
I have a good understanding regarding pain management
in infant and children. I have an clear understanding on
how each different pain assessment scale works, and how
children react to pain, and that you need to be able to
read the physical signs that child demonstrate when they
have pain.

In my furture nursing practice, I am hoping to be able to

work with children. Depending on the area I am able to
work, understanding how children react to pain, and how
to properly assess a child for pain , is going to be an
important part of what i do.
