Dear University of Notre Dame Financial Aid Department,
I am unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to attend the University of Notre Dame.
Ever since I visited the campus last year, I knew that Notre Dame was the college for me. If I
could pay for college with the amount of love I have for it, I would be set; however, this is not an
option. This leads to why I am contacting you today: I would like to appeal my financial aid
decision.
In my financial aid package, I was given $1,425 in campus employment and $1,750 in
federal direct unsubsidized loans. I am appreciative of the amount that has already been
afforded to me; however, I wanted to explain a few family circumstances that cannot be
explained on my FAFSA Report. First, my parents are not helping to cover any of my college
costs. Despite the numerous talks and presentations I have made to them about why investing
in my future would be a great investment for them, they refuse to help me.. This leaves me
responsible for 100% of my college tuition as well as paying for room and board. I have taken
on extra hours at work, only bought new clothes when they were absolutely necessary, and
greatly restricted myself with how much money I spend when I go out with friends. Each of
these activities has helped me save up; however, the money is not adding up fast enough.
It is because of these reasons that I would like to know if there are any other
scholarships or financial aid the University of Notre Dame can provide me with. Throughout high
school, I have worked extremely hard. My sophomore year, I was elected into the position of
Wisconsin DECA Vice President of Business Partnerships, which was no easy feat. During my
time as a state officer, I created business partner resources for high schools around the state,
started Wisconsin DECAs first LinkedIn page, and helped raise over $30,000 for the Muscular
Dystrophy Association. Although a great deal of work went into these projects, I loved every
second of it because it was related to the type of career I want to pursue in the future. My hard
work has payed off so much so that I was one of few who was admitted into the Joseph
Wharton Scholars Program at the University of Pennsylvania. This was a huge opportunity for

me, yet I turned it down because I believe that the University of Notre Dame will be able to give
me a better education.
I am extremely excited to attend the University of Notre Dame next year, and hope that
with your help, I will be able to attend at a price that is less burdensome for myself. Each and
every dollar that is afforded me will go towards educating myself so I can make a change in the
world in my own unique way. I appreciate the time you have spent not only reading my letter, but
also thinking about my situation. If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to contact
me. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,

Katherine Brown
