Music as a Form of Expression
Music is a creation that has evolved and changed throughout its existence. Its uses as well
as its complexity to fulfill peoples interest has been greatly admired and appreciated by people
of different ages. The beauty of music consists of the power it holds to form different variations
and different genres which can potentially lead to the creation of different trends and even
cultures. The evolution of music is clear and many basic characteristics of it have transformed in
just aa short life span of only 50 years. even if you go back half a century the characteristics in
different music genres are noticed easily. Two of the music genres that were created in different
eras and as a resultd consequently share limitedvery little similarities, are and characteristics are
Rap music and Oldies Oldies music. Not only is does the great gap between their creation is a
reason for their different features, but also the difference in the way each genrethey wants to be
recognized collaborates with the idea of distinction and uniqueness. It is easy to assume. These
distinctions are what make the listener believethat these genres have no similarities at all, yet but
that is a common serious misconception. When listening to songs of each genre, the listener may
become aware that both share similarities when presenting a topic and idea through their
respective form of art and that both can. as a result that Each genrethey both can share one same
topic by topic and simply applying their different perceptions and identifications into their final
outcomes. . This is clearly presented easily noticed when listening to the song Whatever Yyou
Llike, which was launched by famous rapper T.I in the year 2008 and also when listening to a

classic Oldies song that goes by the name of Earth Angel, which was released by a band called
The Penguins back in 1954. Both of these songs, despite their different genres, genres for
example, have taken many stands to present the topic of love into their musical creations.
Despite the differences in beat, vocals, lyrics, intended audiences, and ways they are being
stereotyped, they both songs can share one same central idea, and with deep analysis lyzation we
are able to can both understand that there is no right or wrong way to present music or the idea of
love.
Lyrics to a a song are an influential component that initially whatcapture a make a
listeners attention and consequently form a connection between them. This connection is formed
after the listener connect with the message of a song, and also as well understands the message
the composer what the composerauthor is attempting to make, which is usually stands and singer
is standing for based on the composers ir own beliefs that relate to a specific musical genre and
their interpretation of a specific genre.. . In the present, when we think of Ooldies music we
automatically relate it turn on a switch that makes us connect this music to romance;, and love,
therefore it is no surprise that love is a topic presented to us in this music genre. . Oldies present
to us the idea of love by taking values that were being cherished at the time by couples that
listened to this music mainly during the 1950s and the 1960s and were adopted by couples
during the time of this genres first appearance. These . vValues which include the admiration
and respect towards a womans beauty, which then motivate and encourage menincluded the
admiration of women beauty by men and their desire to obtainsteal a womans love. In the song
Earth Angel, a woman is referred to as an angel on earth, which is clear evidence of the godly
and heavenly admiration a man might feel towards a woman, this based on her physical and
internal features. features. The se For these reasons, lyrics of this song are innocent as well as

sincere since they emphasize the insistence of a man trying to win over a womans heart and
rightfully acquireobtaining a chance to go out with her.the woman. The expressions used in this
song make the listener implyassume that the person who is singing feels determined to obtain
mutual love and respect, which adds up to the idea credibility that love exists and it is something
necessary to be happy.. were A clear distinction of this genre is the power it holds to express
powerful inner feelings through words and can also be interpreted as lyrics, which . always
innocent, and appeared to be sincere. Lyrics which generally explained a man having a crush on
a woman based on the womans features which usually included her hair, her eyes, the way she
walked and the way she presented herself. Another obvious distinction of this genre which is
worthy of mentioning is the well thought out lyrics included in the song which at times appeared
to be derived and inspired able byto become a poem. Without a doubt, the creatorsation of
Ooldies music made a very good job at conveying the message and centralizing the idea of love
as a means of genuine admiration and affection held toward a significant other. .
Not all lyrics are inspireddriven out by the the same conceptidea of a topic; as a result
that there are different points of view in music and different characteristics that must be
portrayed.. based on the conception that not everything is seen from the same point of view.
Rrap music might be critiqued for its violent, explicit, and at times vulgar content, yet it should
not be given a negative connotation. Just like Oldies music, Rap music presents the idea of love,
but it does it in a way where it reflects in the lyrics what this genre stands for. but it is simply a
matter of perceptions and what the genre stands for. When the topic of love is integrated into rap
music, there are specific different characteristics which are opposite to the ones presented in
Oldies music. which might oppose oldies music as to what is the correct way of loving a
person. Keeping in mind the fact that rap music has to remain loyal to its origins characteristics

roots of using slang and also some explicit language, the rap song Whatever you like has
portrayed love by much of their intent to portray love in a certain way has been adopting
attributes ed from the culture Rap music it has been creating during present times. In the song by
famous rap artist T.I, For these reasons, lyrics usually present the idea message that men are
responsible for providing luxuries, fame, monetary gain, and material objects to a women in
order for them to prove their love and worth. The content of the lyrics might also promoteesent
the idea that women should be are valued for their physical features and not by their intelligence

times might even be characterized as possessions. This is done with the intent to remain true to

the audience composed of mostly teen individuals. e audience. as their own, at least when it
comes to music.
The rhetorical devices used by authors who write lyrics for Ooldies songs and those who
write lyrics to integrate to Rrap songs are influencedaffected by the different eras in which these
different genres were being created. During the 1950s and 1960s it would be socially surprising
and unacceptable to listen to music that would connect love to sexencourage love to be sexually
driven, and instead it was believed love was what led to sexual satisfaction.e is what caused
sexual satisfaction. instead of lobe being what drives sexual satisfaction as a result. Oldies have
instead been known and recognized for being songs that could potentially be played at a
wedding, homecoming, or prom when it comes time to slow dance and enjoy mutual feelings
with a partner.between a couple. It seems clear This proves that music genres are given different

stereotypes which are rightfully adopted and integrated into the society we are part of. Rap music
instead has taken advantage of the difference in freedom of speech as well as the open mindset
that a lot of people have been able to obtain in present times.. In the present world there are a lot
of things that are now socially acceptable which were not half a century ago. Along with this, the
idea of monetary gain and fame has also changed and has been intensified throughout the years.
The rap song Whatever Yyou Llike narrates the story of a man who is willing to give luxuries
and money to a woman in exchange for love, while the song Earth Angel narrates the story of a
romantic man who is trying to obtain love by writing caring words and putting them together to
express his inner feelings. . For this reason, Tthere are characteristics that are mentioned in Rrap
music that portray the idea that money is everything and money can eventually buy love, which
is a completely different concept from that presented presented in Oldies music where the main
focus is the well- being of a woman and the romanticism. between two human beings..
Despite the fact that both of these genres are clearly different when it comes to the lyrics
and the content they present to us with their specific conventions, it is also true that both of them
are being greatly influenced by the ideas that shaped society during their respective eras. of their
eras. The differences in their eras are what make a central idea appear to be correct, which in this

different ways of expressing love, which also impact different audiences. . Without any

be one way to interpret thingks, but thankfully we have been given the opportunity to express
ourselves in different ways, even if the subject matter is the same. is unchangeable.
