WP2: 4AM Thoughts

How/Why It Supports Your

Argument

The academic articles both work

towards educating their audience on
the scientific basis of insomnia
through extensive detail and use of
data while the non-academic piece
provides useful solutions to this
issue in a more causal manner by
appealing to emotions and sharing
personal experiences.

how the author uses numbers and

the reader.

facts the author first gives the fact,
then later uses it to reason with the
reader. This furthers my argument
because it explains how the author
uses the detail to his advantage by
bringing up more facts.

7. A Tumblr post serves to

educate the reader and
present a casual solution.
8. The audiences setting when
reading a Tumblr post is in a
casual atmosphere so the
author should cater the
conventions towards that
setting.
9. In a Tumblr post, a hook is
required in order to catch the
readers interest.

10.
A Tumblr post uses
pathos to help its argument.

11.
The purpose of the two
articles creates difference
sentence structures.

12.
Scholarly articles are
constructed by ideas

13.
Tumblr post differs in
moves of color, fonts, and
short paragraphs.

This paragraph brings up the second

type of article, the Tumblr post. In
this paragraph I discus the diction
used which is casual in order to
cater to audience expectations.
This paragraph explains why
understanding the settings of the
audience is important when deciding
what diction to use as well as what
content to include. This paragraph
serves to explain why the audience
should care.
I go into detail in how a hook is used
and why. The author in this piece
uses a definition as a hook. This
paragraph explains why a hook is
important because a Tumblr post
needs to first catch the audiences
attention which differs from a
scientific article where the audience
has their own incentive.
In this paragraph I explain why a
Tumblr post uses pathos instead of
logos and ethos and compare it back
to the scientific article to
differentiate between the two.
This paragraph points out different
structures between the two articles.
This is difference in organizational
structures in font, bullet points,
titles and etc. This is important to
my argument because it shows how
structure affects how the articles
differ.
This paragraph goes off the last
paragraph but goes into detail about
the scholarly article and how it is
constructed by ideas. The scholarly
article has a more structured form
so I included an extra paragraph on
it alone so the reader understands
the specific structure and what it
contains.
I included this paragraph to compare
it back to the scholarly article. It
shoes the difference of length and

The two articles differ in
the amount of time and
research.

The two articles are
written to accomplish different
things.

scholarly article differ from the
non-academic article but both
have their pros and cons.

content as well as the usage of color

and creative fonts.
I bring up a new point of how much
time and research each article
takes. The scholarly article needs a
lot of research and has an extended
length while the Tumblr post is
depended on the interpretations of
the writer.
I explain what each article hopes to
accomplish and what conventions
they use to do that. I also remind
the reader of the purpose of each
piece and how the decisions of the
writer revolve around that purpose. I
also explain the audience the author
is expecting to write to which also
explains the choice of words.
This paragraph also compares the
two articles but in how they differ in
limitations. I explain the pros and
cons of both and how they have
their own strengths and
weaknesses.
I bring back the main point that
even though they are about the
same topic of insomnia the different
purposes of education and
education allows the articles to
differ in content and moves.

Rereading my WP2, I found myself getting lost in each paragraph and

not understanding how they connected to each other. I struggled a lot with
structure since I was focused on answering every question in the prompt
and therefore had a hard time having an organized structure. In terms of
structural changes, I really tried to have a main idea per paragraph instead
of having many combined in a single paragraph. I found that this helped me
a lot in terms of remembering my main argument and point I'm trying to
make to the reader. I also tried to connect the main ideas of each paragraph
together in terms of how they are trying to achieve the same purpose. I
tried to transition each paragraph to each other so the reader does not feel
confused. I also shortened each paragraph so the reader does not feel
overwhelmed as well as myself. I compared the three articles to each
together a lot more and I found this helped strengthen my argument by
reminding the reader of something they read earlier in another paragraph.

Reverse outlining really reminded me of my main argument. I found

myself rereading my thesis a lot and trying to figure out the best way
possible for each paragraph to relate back to the thesis. I cut out a couple
paragraphs which was tough but they were off topic and did nothing to
further my argument so it had to be done. The reverse outlining helped me
realize the main point for each paragraph and understand why I was writing
it so I made sure not to include fluff so each sentence actually served a
purpose in furthering my point. It also helped me make sure that ideas
didnt overlap and that I didnt state something I already said. Overall the
reverse outlining was very helpful in giving me a sense of direction of where
I want to go with my paper as well as allowed me to understand what my
thesis means and how I should go about in proving my argument.
