HowIHavegrownasamathematician

Allthroughoutmylifemathhasbeenoneofmyweakestsubjects.InElementaryschool,
Ididn'tgettheproperfoundationofsimplethingsthatIwouldneedallthroughoutmylife,like
multiplicationandfractions.Ialwaysstruggledanddislikedmultiplicationandfractions,butwhat
Ididn'tknowwasthatIwasgoingtousethemallmylife.SinceIwasyounganddidn'tthink
aboutthefuture,Igaveuponmathanddidn'tputintheefforttopracticeandlearnthematerial.
Thisreallyaffectedmeinmiddleschool,especiallysinceweworkedalotwithfractions.
EverytimeIsawfractionsinmymathproblemsIimmediatelygaveup,fractionswasn'tlike
divisionormultiplicationwhichyoucandoonacalculator.Icouldneverpicturemyselfbeing
exemplarorevenproficientinmath,nordidIeverseemyselfenjoyingit.Freshmenyear,with
thehelpofmyteachersanddedicationIbegantoapplymyselfandactuallyenjoyedmath.Now
mathisoneofmyfavoritesubjects,althoughattimesitcanbedifficult,Istillperseverethrough
it.IfIdon'tunderstandthematerial,orIgetagradei'mnotproudof,Igotomyteacherto
remediateorreviewwhatIdon'tunderstand.ThroughtmyFreshmenyearIbecamemore
responsibleandhardworking,andaimedashighasIpossiblycould.
BeforeeighthgradeIfearedmath,andIstruggledalot.Iknewinhighschoolmathwas
onlygoingtogetmoreadvancedandcomplicated.Iwantedtobecomethepersonwhoenjoyed
mathanddidn'tstrugglewithit,soItookafterschoolmathtutoringtobecomeproficientinthe
areaneeded.Thiswasachoicei'mgladImade,becausethecontentIdidn'tunderstandbefore
eighthgrade,isincorporatedinclasseslikeAlgebra1andGeometry.TakingAlgebra1in
Freshmenyearwasn'tasbadasIthoughtitwouldbe.Ialwaysfocusedinclass,participated
andcompletedmyworkwhichleadtomeunderstandingthematerial.IknewIhadtopayextra
attentioninmathbecauseIalwayshadahardtimeunderstandingit,andifImissedonestepI
wouldbecompletelythrownoff.WhatIenjoyedalotaboutAlgebra1,isthatalotofthematerial
wasappliedtoreallifesituations,andwhatIwaslearningneverseemeduseless.Welearned
aboutlinearequations,polynomials,radicalsandsoon.Allthesetopicswereconnectedbackto
reallifesituationsonewayoranother,whichcaughtmyattention.OneartifactfromFreshmen
yearthatshowstheeffortIputinisthe
ScatterPlot,Correlation,andLineofBestFitExam.
For
thisexamwehadtosolveequationsonrealworldproblems,likefindingthelineofbestfitin
sportslikeBaseball.IenjoyedworkingonthistopicbecauseitissomethingIcanactuallyuse
outofschool,toplotdataandfindoutinformation.Algebra1reallyallowedmetolookatmath
differently,andrealizetheimportanceofmathinandoutsideofschool.
AttheendofFreshmenyearIdreadedthefactthatIwasgoingtohavetotake
Geometrynextschoolyear.IknewGeometrywasgoingtobealotmorehardersinceitinvolved
moreshapesandlettersthenitdidnumbers.There'saofofequationsyouneedtomemorizein
GeometrytobeabletosolveforXindifferentshapes,andtobeabletodothingslike
Trigonometry.ImadesureItookalotofnotesandpayedattentioninclass,thisallowedmeto
memorizetheequations.Geometrywentverygoodforme,Ialwaysgotthematerialrightaway
andifIdidn'tIwouldaskquestionsuntilIunderstoodit.MyteachergaveusAoLsthat

connectedGeometrytothingslikebutterfliesandtheirsymmetry,tospiderwebsandallthe
differentanglesinthem.ThisallowedmetoseethatGeometryreallyiseverywhere,especially
whereIleastexpectit.Thischangedmyperspectiveonmath,everytimeIdidn'tunderstanda
topic,orIthoughtItwasn'tinteresting,Iwouldconnectitbacktosomethingaroundme.One
AoLinGeometrythatconnectswithreallifeproblemsthatIenjoyedwasthe
Pythagorean
TheoremAoL.
ThePythagoreanTheoremcanbeappliedtoeverydaythings,likehowfar
someonehittheballwhileplayinggolf.Ioriginallydidn'tgetexemplaronthisAoL,butIwanted
totakeadvantageofmyopportunities,andsoIremediatedit.Igrappledabitwithunderstand
someconcepts,butIwasresponsibleandmetwithmyteachertogetthehelpIneeded.
Geometryallowedmetolookatmathinanewway,inwhichIactuallycanapplytoreallife
situations.Ilearnedtobecomemoreresponsiblewithmylearningnotonlyinthisclass,butin
allotherstoo.
