Culturally

Responsive Teaching
By Alysa Gray

Why is CRT important?

Culturally responsive teaching is important because we all have a
different background and story.
CRT gives everyone a chance to learn about the many different cultures
in the world.
It also gives students a voice in their learning.

Positive Perspectives on Parents and

Families
Positive perspective on parents and families starts with the teacher and parent
communication. Either by phone, email or a note sent home.
This gives the parents a chance to be involved in what the child is learning and allows the
teacher to tell the parents what their expectation and goals our for their students.
Parents are involved in school functions and events but parental involvement also includes
how parents communicate high expectations, pride, and interest in their child's academic
life

Positive Perspectives on Parents and

Families
An example related to Grades K-6
Sending out a weekly email/letter from the teacher to the parents
explaining how their child is doing in their classroom.

Communication of High Expectations

The first thing that a student should learn walking into your class is that you have high
expectations. Everyone involved in the student's life or education should make that a
priority.
Effective communication of high expectations helps students develop a healthy self concept.
Also helps motivate the students to be successful.
Students will believe in themselves more if they know that their teachers, guidance
counselors and parents believe in them.

Communication of High Expectations

An example related to Grades K-6
The first day of class have the students all set goals for the class. (example- we will aim to
get 100 on our spelling test) This will give the students a goal to reach but more
importantly it is a goal they set for themselves.
Tell the students the expectations that you have for them and make sure they hear you!

Student-Centered Instruction
Students are encouraged to direct their own learning and work with
others.
Student centered instruction allows the students to learn their own way
and become independent.

Student-Centered Instruction
An example related to Grades K-6
Form book talks with groups of 3-4 people. Everyone reads the same
book then a student led discussion is had to talk about the book.

Differentiated Instruction
Differentiated instruction is involved with materials that are interesting
to the students. Just like differentiated instruction, CRT allows the
students to be involved and chose what they learn about and learn
about the different cultures.
