Constanta on the next page.
is Romania's largest port and an important tourist city. It lies in the south-east of Romania,
on the shore of the Black Sea. It has a population of over 350,000.
It is one of the oldest cities in Romania. It was founded by Greek traders in the 6th century Be. In
earlier times Constanta was known as Tomis and was a very prosperous city.
In the year AD 9 Ovid, the famous Roman poet, was exiled to Tomis by Emperor Augustus. Here he
wrote his Epistulae ex Ponto which described life in Tomis. His letters also contained many appeals to
the emperor to allow him to go back to Rome. His appeals were in vain and he died in exile. Visitors to
Constanta go to see his tomb and statue. in the centre of the city.
The old name Tomis was changed to Constantiana in the 4rh century AD by the Roman emperor
Constantine the Great, in memory of his sister Constantina.
