Mozambique Data Page Evaluation

Mozambique seems to be a developing country economically. The income is not very high compared to many
other countries. The GDP is only $1,268. Some individuals get paid $1,268 a year. And the riches nations with
the highest GDP have more than ten times Mozambiques GDP. Mozambique is also located in Africa, and
Africa is known as a poor continent altogether. Another example of developing economy is the Internet
availability. Only 5.5% of Mozambiques population can use the Internet. Only 1.4 million people use the
Internet in Mozambique. That is not even close to half of the population in Mozambique. If the economy were
really good then I would expect at least 80% of the population to use the Internet. If Mozambique had a better
economy they could get better resources to use more of the Internet.
Physical Issue-Flooding
Mozambique is in the southern region of Africa, which is where flooding and cyclones commonly happen.
Mozambique is constantly hit with floods. The floods in Mozambique are usually bad. Crops are destroyed and
fields are likely to remain inaccessible and people also forced to move to higher grounds. Over the last few
days, Mozambique has had some heavy rainfall. Mozambique had 104 mm in 24 hours from the rain. The
heavy rainfall puts them at risk of having a flood. This brings fear to the people of Mozambique that there will
be a repeat of deadliest flood in 2000 that killed more than 800 people and towns were submerged by the
water, so many people were left homeless. There are many organizations that contribute to building news
homes and repairing the damage done from the floods.
It is predicted that Mozambiques flooding possibility will increase significantly in the 20 years and even more.
The rainfall will increase and there will be an even higher risk of cyclones and droughts. By 2060, the sea level
is expected to rise 10 to 20 cm because of the heavy rainfall. The floods are expected to be much worse.
There will be a number of floods like the one in 2000. Hopefully, these predictions do not come true. This will
cause a number of deaths because the country is suffering from malaria which causes 44,000 to 67,000
deaths annually.
Human Issue- Poverty
A major human issue in Mozambique is poverty. Even though Mozambique is growing economically faster
and faster each year, it is still one of the poorest countries. The majority lives on less than US $1.25 and
because of that they don't have easy access to safe water and doctors and schools. About 60 percent of the
population has access to safe water. Most people that live in Mozambique take up farming or fishing. The
agricultural level is low though. Markets are distant or unreliable. It is hard for people to get more successful
jobs because they don't have the money to afford resources necessary to learn about the higher paying jobs.
The women in poverty are at more of a disadvantage. They have less of a chance at getting an education,
which results in less skills. Their healthcare is not the best and it is very common for women to die in childbirth.
Only 12% of the women use contraception. Young women also have a higher chance of having HIV or AIDS.
The children are also highly affected by poverty. One-fifth of children below the age of five are underweight.
The children are also at a higher risk of getting sick.
