Inthepastfourteenyears,morethat6,000Mexicanimmigrantshavediedtryingtocross
theUSMexicanborder.1TheUSAcannotallowthisunethicallargedeathtolltorisefurther.
CiviliansfromMexicoandCentralAmericaareimmigratingtotheUSwiththehopeofimproving
theirlivesandthelivesoftheirchildrentheyarenotattemptingtoharmamericanjobsorwell
being,theyareexercisingahumanright.DenyingthemthesanctuaryoftheUSmakestheUS
governmentnobetterthanthecorruptgovernmentsthatimmigrantsarefleeingfrominthefirst
place.Streamliningtheimmigrationprocessandallowingsanctuarytoimmigrantawaitinglegal
immigrationtotheUS,willallowimmigrantstoimmigratethroughlegalchannels,significantly
reducingthedeathtollandallowingimmigrantstoenjoythefreedomsoftheUSwithoutthe
threatofdeportation.

CentralAmericanshumanitarianneedsrequiresimmediateaction.4ofthe5countries
withthehighestmurderratesintheworldarecentralamerican.23Thesecountriesalsoshare

menarecreatedequal.Withinsanelydangerouslivingconditionsinthecountriesimmigrants
arefleeingfrom,itisunethicaltodenythemhelp.

SomepeoplemayarguethatimmigrantscandamagetheUSeconomy,andthisis
potentiallytrueintheshorttermimmigrantscanhaveasmallnegativeimpactontheUSsshort
termeconomy.However,astimepassestheeconomynaturallyadjustsandinthelongterm
evenuneducatedimmigrantscangrowtheeconomyasmallamount.5ImmigrantsaffecttheUS
economyonlyslightly,anddenyingahumanbeingthechanceofabetterlifeforanyeconomic
reasoniscompletelyunethical,asitisvaluingtheperceivedvalueofmoneyovertheinfinite
valueofahumansoul.Inaddition,immigrantsimpactontheUSeconomyissosmallthateven
ifyoucompletelydisregardedmoralsyouwouldcometotheconclusionthatthereisno
economicthreatposedbyimmigrants.

Simplifyingtheimmigrationprocess,andprovidingsanctuarywhileittakesplacewill
allowforeasierlegalimmigrationintotheUSfromMexicoandCentralAmerica.Currently,even
beingallowedtoliveintheUSisalong,tedious,andconfusingprocessthatcantakemorethan
5years.6Itisnowonderthatmanyimmigrantschoosetobypassthesystembysimplymaking

corruptgovernment.7However,iftheUSgovernmentweretoreviseandsimplifythe
immigrationprocesswhilegivingimmigrantsasafeplacetowaituntiltheyareprocessed,the
ideaoflegalimmigrationwouldbecomemuchmoreappealingtopotentialimmigrants.
Immigratinglegallyalongsafechannelsnotonlyallowsformorepotentialfinancialbenefitsfor
boththeimmigrantandtheUS,butalsonegatesmostoftheenvironmentaldangerthatan
immigrantwouldencountertravellingthroughillegalchannels.

Theabhorrentconditionscentralamericanandmexicanimmigrantsarefleeingfrom
necessitatehumanitarianaid.Immigrantsposenoreasonablethreattotheeconomyandillegal
passagesintotheUSarehorrendouslyunsafe,makingsimplifying,andacceleratingthe
immigrationprocesstheobviouscourseofaction.Providingasafeplacetostaywhilethis
processtakesplacewillincreasetheattractivenessofimmigratingthroughlegalchannels,
furtherdiminishingthenumerousdeathsthatcomefromimmigrantsmigratingthroughillegal
channels.Therefore,itiscommonsensetoreformimmigrationlawstoallowforsimpler
passageintotheUS,notjustforeconomicreasons,butindefenceoftherightsofhumanity.
