Purpose

Thepurposeofthislabistolearntheprocessbywhichsweetsmellsaresynthesized.

Introduction
Inchemistrywestartedlookingatdifferentsmellslikeminty,sweet,fishy.Eachsmellis
madewithatypeofalcoholandcarboxylicacidwhichendupmakinganester,andwater.We
startedoffsmellingdifferentsubstancesandsometimeswewereabletorecognizethesmell
withoutanyinformationgiventous,butothertimeswecouldntrecognizethesmellsojustby
lookingatthestructureortheendingoftheirnames,ormolecularformulaweareabletoknow
thesmells.TheThefunctionalgroupsareamine,carboxylicacid,ester,keytones,andalkanes.

TheevidenceIhavethatanesterwasproducedineachofmyreactionsisthethateachesterhastohave
analcoholandacarboxylicacidinorderforanestertoform.Ineachofmyreactantsthereisanalcoholand
carboxylicacidandwhentheybothareheatedanesterisformed,alsoanotherpieceofevidenceiswhenthe
esterisformedthewayitwillsmellwilltellyouifitsmellsgoodthenitsformedandifdoesntsmellgoodthen
itsnotformed.Thesulfuricacidsworksasacatalystanditisnotlistedwiththeotherreactantsbecauseit
doesntchange,thesulfuricacidisntareactant.IfIwantedtosynthesizeamoleculethathadthesweetsmellof
cinnamonIwouldmixethylalcoholandanthranilicacid.Thereactionthatwouldtakeplaceistheboth
hydrogen'sfromthealcoholandtheacidandtheoxygenfromtheacid.

Conclusion
Whenanestersynthesisreactiontakesplaceatamolecularlevelwhathappensisthatwhentheoxygen
andthetwohydrogen'sfromtheacidandcarboxylicacidconnectbothreactantscreateanesterwhichisa
molecule.
