STEPS OF THE LESSON

(key activities and key questions)
Opening
Explain to the student that you are a
student teacher and that you have
never done this before, so it would
be wonderful if they could be extra
patient and be a helper in teaching
the student teacher a new skill. Also
remind them that they might
remember doing this in previous
years.
Lesson Development:
Perform the MOI assessment on the
student, being careful to follow the
terminology used, and to write notes
on the students strategies.
Repeat the opening as above

EXPECTED STUDENT
REACTIONS OR
RESPONSES

TEACHER RESPONSES
TO STUDENTS
(including consideration of
the need to adapt, reteach
or extend)

The student should respond

that they want to help.

Thank the child.

The student should respond

to the test well as they have
done this previously.

Once the student has

finished the test, thank
them for being so patient
and for helping you to
learn something new.

where students need to be
extended.

PRE-SERVICE TEACHER POST LESSON REFLECTION

Student learning (Were the stated goals achieved by all students or only some?)

The goals for this lesson were for both student and student teacher. For the student, the goals were achieved as they have
made improvements on their maths skills since the last time they performed the assessment six months ago. Many of the
Ausvels for level 1 were achieved with the two students I interviewed. The goals were also achieved for me as a student
teacher, as I have learnt how to perform a clinical interview and how to take notes about learning strategies that students use
to do maths.
Effectiveness of the learning and teaching strategies (For example, review your questioning skills in checking for understanding or
your explaining skills in information and modelling, or your organising and communicating skills, for example, giving instructions,
encouraging student participation etc.)

Strong emphasis is placed on the teachers questioning skills, as you have to strictly follow the script. This, I noticed, can have
an impact on how the students react and process the questions, as they are not used to such a clinical setting without any help
from their teacher.

Reflection on what you have learned and changes for future lessons (Identify a key learning/insight that you have gained about
effective learning and teaching and those changes you will make when planning and implementing your next Direct Lesson Plan)

I was quite proud of how I went with the clinical interviewing in the MOI. I was nervous at first, but after getting started, I
realised it is not as bad as I thought and I would feel even more confident doing it again in future.
