ADVANTAGES OF INDONESIAN NATIONAL STANDARD (SNI)

Nowadays, there are a lot of cases of health caused by food happen in Indonesia.
This thing happen because of the low understanding of people about the good standard to
consume. So, to solve that the general standard on food is needed. The standard in Indonesia
called Indonesian National Standard (abbreviated SNI). SNI is the only standards that apply
nationally in Indonesia. SNI formulated by the Technical Committee and confirmed by the
BSN (National Standardization Agency of Indonesia). SNI stands for Indonesia National
Standard or typically called standard quality for certain product that obtained by way of
product certification system to determine the conformity of a product with specified
requirements through initial testing of samples of product, assessment and surveillance of the
involved quality system, and surveillance by testing of product samples taken from the
factory or the open market, or combination of both. The affixing of SNI marking on the
product is an indication that it meets the standard requirements (SNI) in place to allow it to be
sold anywhere in the Republic of Indonesia. However, the fact tells that not every food
industry take a part to this programs, especially on small industry in food processing or
packaging. Actually, if all of food industry in Indonesia apply the SNI program, it will bring a
lot of advantages.
SNI is applied for health and safety humans, animals, and plants, also environment
conservation, healthy competition, increase competitiveness, and improve efficiency of
industrial work. SNI will help government and businesses in the food sector facing of the
Asean Economic Community (AEC) which starts from December 2015. SNI is needed to
improve the competitiveness of domestic products.
Businesses who implement the Indonesian National Standard compulsorily applied,
must have a certificate or SNI. Goods or services can include the logo of SNI after passing
certification process, which are some series of activities of issuing certificates for goods or
services. Certificate is the written assurance given by institution or laboratory who has been
accredited to certify that the goods or services, including processes, systems or personnel
have met the required standard. SNIs mark itself is a certification mark affixed on the
packaging or labeling of goods that the goods or services have been fulfilling the
requirements of the Indonesian National Standard. Thus, the presence of SNI mark on food
products will be able to increase consumer confidence because that products already met the
standards.

The enactment of SNI can help to reduce consumer health problems that caused by
their consumption of sub-standard food. The food products that already have SNI certificate
means that it has been through the good and safe food processing. Through the good
processing, the food products will also have a good quality, so the possibility of the
occurance of any disease caused by SNI food is relatively small.
On the side of food companies, SNI provides some advantages as well, such as the
the protection from the government. With the SNI, the government oriented to protect the
micro, small, and medium enterprises, so that the standard-setting SNI will encourage them to
enhance competitiveness and raise the quality of their food products. In the context of this
protection, the government through the National Standardization Agency or Badan Standar
Nasional (BSN) provides free services for micro and small-scale producers to get SNI on
their products. These agencies put forward the guidance functions than the oversight function
that harm small micro enterprises.
The last party that directly got the advantages of SNI in the food sector is the
government. SNI makes the domestic market has a mechanism of protection from the
invasion of foreign food materials or products which the quality is not yet assured. Another
advantage is, through the wider enactment of SNI will grow the dynamics of the new
economy, in which the producers would attempt to get SNI on their products, while the
community would grow more product certification bodies that are also credible to assess and
test a product.
In conclusion, SNI provides many advantages for the various parties. SNI will be
very helpful for consumers because they will be more comfortable and safe in consuming
products which have SNI certificate. Moreover, SNI is also beneficial for the industry as its
products have good standards that earn the trust of consumers. For the government, SNI is
also able to protect Indonesian products from competition with foreign markets.
