LESSONs PURPOSE
The purpose of this lesson is to introduce
a few test strategies and reading
comprehension concepts to make an
amazing reader and thinker.
LESSON LENGTH: One 20 minute lesson
in one day

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to identify and remember strategies that make them think
at a higher level of thinking when reading.
Students will be able to remember and apply skills to perform at a higher level
when taking a test.

Students will be a able to clearly state the acronym WHIP, meaning write, have
examples, investigate, and put the best answer when taking a test .

Teacher:
Class, Class, we have been reading today for our Reading Quest across the United States.
You will be doing an activity where we will remember, understand, and analyze how to read
and take test taking activities and strategies to use when we are reading and taking our
Accelerated Reader comprehension tests.

SUGGESTED PACING

Task 1

The teacher will discuss the importance of


why when we are reading we have to
think by using a few strategies to help
with the understanding of the text.

Task 2

The students participate in an activity of


saying what the question, connect, infer,
visualize, predict, and summarize
strategies mean when the student is
reading. This will be done in a step by
step chant. The teacher will say, mirror
me with words
Question- wonder & search for answer.
Infer- Use text evidence & what I know to
make sense of what Im reading.
Connect- Connect to self-using my
experiences.
Predict- Use clues to infer what may
happen next.
Summarize- Determine the important
ideas.
Visualize- create mental images.

Task 3

Students will take turns with their partners


and say the definition of each meaning
with reference to their bookmarks (the
bookmarks display the list of concepts).

Task 4
Students will practice the dance Watch Me Whip with a GoNoodle.com video of children
performing the dance with lyrics. Once the class is comfortable with the dance they will be
divided into groups of 5 and practice the dance with the words on the anchor chart.

The words are displayed on the anchor chart.

Students:
Students will self-correct and help each
other with the remembering of words in
both activities of the reading and test
strategies.
Review Periodically Building review
of the lesson is important.

Students will reference to anchor charts
when needing to clarify or remember
reading and test strategies.

CLOSURE

Students will perform tasks modeled by the teacher. The teacher will close with the
review of all strategies.
Teacher: Class, you just learned a few techniques you can do when reading with a
partner and in groups. You were given a reading strategies bookmark so use it when
needed. when you have a chance review the dance with the words of test strategies
when taking your AR test. Happy learning.

discussion.

Just review and helpful tips when reading
and taking a comprehension test for AR.

BACK- UP
Apply the strategies with EEK reading buddies after the mini lesson. Students can
reference their bookmarks and anchor charts to remember and apply their knowledge when
reading effectively.

ENRICHMENT AND REMEDIAL ACTIVITIES


Students can self-correct and review the different steps when reading a new book. This will
give them a chance to test out their skills in reading comprehension and test taking.
FOLLOW- UP
Students will complete an AR test continuously today to tally as many test taken in a full day
of reading. This will build excitement in reading and allow students to catch up on AR tests
missed due to time.
