THIRD YEAR A
ROLL NUMBER 5
WHAT IS CLADDING?
Cladding is an exterior finishing system meant to protect the underlying structure (like
a home) and provide an aesthetically appealing finish.
It is the application of one material over another to provide skin or layer intended to
control the infiltration of weather elements, or for aesthetic purposes.
PURPOSE
TYPES
The dry cladding method is safe and chances of stone falling down at a
later date is remote.
Method allow for expansion and contraction of stone in extreme
weather conditions.
The dry cladding method creates a gap of around 30 to 45 mm in
between back wall and stone lining , providing a layer of air cushion
that acts as a thermal barrier.
The appearance of stone used in dry cladding work looks aesthetically
pleasing. The stone fixed with mortar may change in colour due to
absorption of water from back mortar layer.
AESTHETIC
The need to respond to the context within which the building is situated.
The need to satisfy the aesthetic aspirations of the client. (Weathering
characteristics/durability of materials).
Strength to support its own self weight between points of supports or fixings to
the structural frame.
Stability against lateral wind pressures.
Allowance for differential movements between itself, the structural frame and
other adjacent building elements.
FIRE REQUIREMENTS
Restriction of flame spread to internal and external surfaces and
within voids
WEATHER RESISTANCE
Resistance to wind, rain and other forms of precipitation
(cladding and joints).
THERMAL INSULATION
Avoidance of problems arising from cold bridging and
from surface and interstitial condensation.
Minimisation of air leakage
DURABILITY
Durability, freedom from maintenance, and ability to
weather well.
SOUND INSULATION
Prevention of sound originating in one part of the
building being transmitted to other areas via cladding
members/elements.
