The design concept for Aedas innovative competition winning design

is derived from an algorithmic composition, informed by Islamic
principles of design, that has been supplemented by the application
of a dynamic translucent mashrabiya which opens and closes in
response to the movement of the sun, reducing solar gain on the
building faade by up to 50%. The resulting composition seeks
to create a building which is both culturally and environmentally
responsive. The building is targeting a LEED Silver rating and is on
programme for occupation in the Spring of 2012.

Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension

Toronto Transit Commission

Toronto, Canada

Lead Design Architect

Aedas has recently completed the designs for two new below-ground stations on the
Spadina Subway Extension between Toronto and the City of Vaughan in Ontario, Canada.
The Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension (TYSSE) is a new 8.6 km underground
metro project with six stations and ancillary facilities. Highway 407 Station is a key
transport hub in Torontos Transit City 2050 Masterplan. It provides a strategic park
and ride interchange between private car, subway, light rapid transit, and local bus
services adjacent to Highway 407, helping to reduce inner city congestion. Sheppard
West Station is situated at the edge of the Downsview Urban Park and provides an
interchange with Metrolinx regional rail services.

Key concepts for the Highway 407 scheme minimise

passenger circulation distances by anchoring the transit nodes
around a central retail concourse. Column free spaces simplify
wayfinding and allows direct sunlight deep into the station
and subway platform, reducing the need for artificial light.

spaces introducing landscaping deep into the building.

The project involved extensive collaboration across Aedas offices
on three continents.

3.3

Yuny Mixed-Use Development

So Paulo, Brazil

The Yuny Mixed-Use Development is a 138,000 sq m mixed-use

complex including residential, office and retail programme along with
an integrated internal public square. Aedas plan for the site features
an iconic commercial office building and provides semi-public
outdoor areas for the community. The project is being developed
as a collaboration between our So Paulo and New York offices.

Demonstrator

The Computational Design Group of Aedas R&D is working on

a collaborative research project with the Fraunhofer Institute
for Industrial Engineering IAO to investigate new construction
concepts for the future. The first demonstrations that have
been developed combine the algorithmic approach of the
Computational Design Group with the virtual reality technology
developed by the Fraunhofer IAO. The result is an immersive,
interactive design simulator, that allows stakeholders to participate
in negotiation between various concerns and constraints at an
early-stage diagrammatic level. The applications were showcased
live at BAU Munich 2011.
