    TheElectronicControlModule(ECM)containsnomovingparts.ReplacementoftheECMcanbecostly.
    Replacementcanalsobeatimeconsumingtask.Mostelectronicfailuresoccurinthewiringandconnectors.
    WhentroubleshootinghasindicatedthattheECMhasfailed,temporarilymountanewECMonthesideofthe
    engine.TesttheenginewiththenewECM.Iftheproblemnolongerexists,proceedwiththefollowingsteps.

    ReplacementoftheECM
    1.RecordcustomerspecifiedparametersfromthefailedECM.RefertoTroubleshooting,"Electronic
    ServiceToolDoesNotCommunicate"iftheelectronicservicetoolwillnotcommunicate.
    a.Obtainthecustomerpasswordsandrecordthecustomerpasswords.RefertoTroubleshooting,
    "CustomerPasswords"ifthecustomerhaslostthepasswords.
    b.UseCaterpillarElectronicTechnician(ET)toaccessreadcustomerspecifiedparametersfromthe
    ECM.
    c.Recordcustomerparametersonthe"CustomerSpecifiedParametersWorksheet".
    2.ReplacethefaultyECM.
    3.Obtainthefactorypasswords.
    a.Recordtheenginehoursfromtheenginehourmeter.
    b.UseCatETtoaccessthesystemconfigurationparameters.Whenthefactorypasswordscreen
    appears,recordthefollowinginformationonthe"factorypasswordsworksheet".ECMSerial
    Number,EngineSerialNumber,NumberOftheServiceToolandTotalTattletales
    c.LeaveCatETonthefactorypasswordscreenandobtainpasswordsbyprovidingtheinformationon
    the"factorypasswordsworksheet".
    4.ProgramthenewECM.

    configurationparametersmustbeprogrammedbeforeexitingthefactorypasswordscreen.The
    necessarysystemconfigurationparametersmustbeprogrammedbeforeexitingthisscreen.Ifthe
    parametersarenotentered,newpasswordsarerequired.
    Note:Ifthecustomerspecifiedparametersareenteredbeforethesystemconfigurationparameters,
    thetotaltattletaleswillchange.Anewsetoffactorypasswordswillbenecessarytoaccessthe
    systemconfigurationparameters.
    c.Entertheoriginalvaluesinthe"Read/ChangeCustomerSpecifiedParameters".Obtainthesevalues
    fromtheworksheet.
    d.UseCatETtoaccess"Calibrate/MonitorSensors"screen.Also,useCatETtoaccessandcalibrate
    theboostpressuresensorandtherackpositionsensor.RefertoTroubleshooting,"FuelRack
    PositionSensorCalibrate*new*"andTroubleshooting,"InletManifoldPressureTest"for
    calibration.
