What is Cyprus?
Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea since August 16, 1960. Its influenced by
the Turkish and Greek (neighbouring countries). Whom in the past had arguments and debates on
who gets the rights to own Cyprus. The Turkish Ottoman empire took over Cyprus in 1570 which
lead to 3 centuries of Cyprus being rules by the Turkish. In the early 19 hundred The Greek
influenced Cyprus and ought to make an end of the 3 Century long ruling by the Ottoman Empire.
They wanted Cyprus to be united with the rest of Greece. Many Conflicts accrued during the late 18
centuries and throughout the 19 century about who has the possession of Cyprus.
My country, Cyprus, has only recently joined the European Union in 2004, to have the benefits of
common Currency in Europe, stability, allies/relationships such as trade and protection. My island
has been known for its amazing beaches and crystal clear waters, and its antique monuments from
Ancient Greek time.
Cyprus is a tourist magnet, perfect for a 1-2-week holiday with a short plane travel time for people
who live in Europe. Being only 3915km from the Equator, Cyprus has perfect weather averages of
25-26 degrees during July and August for amazing summer holidays.
Cyprus is a diverse country with not only one specific culture but many because of the many
neighbouring influencing countries and the large amount of tourists from all over Europe mainly.
Facts about Cyprus:
Type of Land: Island, nation Island (Europes third largest and 3rd most populated island in the
Mediterranean)
Land mass: 9,251 km
Location: Eastern Mediterranean Sea, 35.1264 N, 33.4299 E
Physical features: The island has two mountain ranges. the Troodos Mountains and the Kyrenia
Mountains. Covers the southern and western portions and is basically half of Cypruss land mass.

Average Rainfall: Cyprus has during the summer months next to

By: Student G
no rainfall but on the contrary during the winter months Cyprus
has an average of 9-10 days of rain per months in December

with 94mm.

This is perfect for assured Good weathers during tourist beach
seasons in the summer but also means that around the rest of

year, Agriculture gets plenty of rain fed water except during the

summer. Small self-owned farms are very common and super
successful contributing majorly to Cyprus GDP.

When Cyprus achieved independence in 1960, the backbone of

its economy was agriculture, mostly small farms, and sometimes

even subsistence farms. During the 1960s, irrigation projects
made possible vegetable and fruit exports; increasingly

commercialized farming was able to meet the demands for

meat, dairy products, and wine from the British and United
Nations troops stationed on the island and from the growing

number of tourists.

In the early 1970s, Cypriot farms, still overwhelmingly small

owner-run units, furnished about 70 percent of commodity
exports and employed about 95,000 people, or one-third of the

island's economically active population.[1] Given the expansion of
the manufacturing and service sectors, however, agriculture's

importance was declining, and in the first half of the 1970s its

share of GDP amounted to 18 percent.

(quotation from Wikipedia: Agriculture in Cyprus, talking
about the contribution of Agriculture to the GDP and the

successfulness of small owner-run farms.)

Mountain rages: there are 3 mountain ranges in

Cyprus but the main 2 are Troodos mountains and
the kyrenia mountains. The highest peak of the
Troodos mountain range is the famous mountain
with the same name as the Mount Olympus in
Greece. From Greek mythology this Mountain is the
passage way to the lands of the Gods. Many temples
are nearby and on the mountain from ancient times
to worship the Greek Olympian gods. The main most
powerful Gods being Zeus (Lord of the sky), Poseidon
(Lord of the Seas) and Hades (Lord of the
Underworld).
Highest peak of the Kyrenia mountain range is
Mount Kyparissovouno, with a peak of 1,024m above
sea level. This mountain range is more of a narrow
mountain range spread out and runs for
approximately 160km. Its made out of mostly
Limestone with some Marble.

Population:
In 2016, Cyprus had a population of 1,176,598 people. With a 0.97% increase from the previous year
being 2015 with a population 1,165,300.
Singapore has a population of 5,696,506 but has a much smaller amount of land.
Cyprus has 9,251 km but Singapore only has 719.1 km. This means that Cyprus is 12.865 times
larger than Singapore with only one 5th of the population. This solves the problem of crowded cities.
While Singapore, like many other countries grow with their tall skyscrapers upwards, Cyprus has
more than enough space to have larger houses with self-owned properties and farms. This is why
farms are very successful and pay a large role for my country.
My country is also very green with its large amount of space and lacking the need to create more
space by deforestation. There are numerous forests of natural vegetation consisting of conifers and
broadleaved trees such as the Pinus Brutia, cedar, cypresses and oaks.
It is said that 17% of the island is classified as woodland.

Cyprus has a very rich history, History from Ancient times, when it was first inhabitant and then the
centuries of conflict for power and Cyprus being taken over by numerous Empires, leaders and kings.
Prehistory: Cyprus was first inhabited by humans in the stone age who lived together with numerous
dwarf species (small animals) such as dwarf elephants and pygmy hippos. Numerous artefacts of
this time have been found that prove of their existents including carvings and tools. These are now
displayed in a museum near Limassol
Bronze age: The first city, Enkomi, was built in the 15th century BC. Traces of systematic copper
farming has been found and this resource was of high value for trades at this time between
themselves and other cities. Mycenaean Greeks inhabited the island at the late stages of the bronze
age and its Greek name Cyprus was already attested from the 15th century BC in the Linear B
script.
1100-1200 BC pottery was produced locally. Also other architectural things such as the cyclopean
walls. Chamber tombs were given up for shaft graves. Palestine pottery was also found during this
period. The first Cypriot city kingdoms were founded 8th century BC.
Written source has been found in 1845 that a king Sargon II, (in 721-705 BC) had the victory against
the seven kings in the land of la, in the district of ladnana or Atnana. Sargons palace being in
Khorsabad.
Around 545 BC the Island was conquered if by the Persians after a longer period of independency.
For the next centuries Persia ruled over Cyprus till it was taken over by Egypt with pharaoh
Alexander the Great being the new ruler.
688 AD the Greeks took over Cyprus and claimed what they said was rightfully theirs back.

By: Student G
Until in 1570, the Turkish Ottoman empire, got a hold of Cyprus with a huge assault of 60,000 troops
that were brought to the island to crush the inhabitants. Despite their stiff resistance, the Greeks
and Armenian Christians remaining were massacred. The Ottomans abolished the feudal system,
that was previously in place in Cyprus, for the millet system.
The Ottomans ruled over Cyprus for 3 centuries, till the first president of modern Greece called for
union of Cyprus with Greece, and many minor uprising took place. Greece ought to make an end of
the 300 years of Turkish ruling over Cyprus in 1828.
The people that lived in Cyprus were already influenced by the Greek from the time that the Greek
ruled over Cyprus and the fact its one of Cypruss neighbouring countries. Many people wanted to
join in with the idea to reunite Cyprus with the rest of Greece.
Though as it turns out, in the aftermath of the Russo-Turkish war (1877-1878) and the Congress of
Berlin, Cyprus was leased by the British empire though Cyprus remained a de jure Ottoman
Territory until the 5th of November 1914 just like Egypt and Sudan. Cyprus officially still was owned
by the Ottomans because an agreement was held that Britain would use the island as a base to also
protect the Ottoman Empire from Russian aggression. This was a symbiosis relationship at the time.
Cyprus played a key military base for Britain being a strategic outpost for many canals and giving
them naval strategic advantages and power.
In 1915 Britain offered Cyprus to Greece in exchange that Greece fights WW1 by Britains side.
Which they declined in 1923. The Greek Cypriot population hoped that Britain would leave Cyprus
after the war and give back Greece what was historically theirs in the 1950s. The Turkish Cypriots
favoured the alliance with Britain due to the naval protection given to their mainland.
On the 16th August 1960, politicians of Cyprus decided to become independent even though they
only had a population of 573,566 of whom 77% were Greeks, 18% were Turks and 5% were other.
Invasions from Turkey were bound to happen so Cyprus enforced a strong Army and Navy with
numerous look out points across the island.
Parliamentary Democracy was introduced in 1961 having Filip de totallynoteriksson elected as
chancellor for two 5 year terms, in 1971 Mika Willnichthelms was chancellor till 1981, in 1981
Tiago Stomachfullland became chancellor of Cyprus, in 1991 Sarah DusseldorfBVBfan was
chancellor till 2001, from 2001 onwards the second Mika was elected, During his time as Chancellor
he supported the idea of Cyprus joining the European union and so he did on the 1st of May 2004,
Mika Schokoladenriegel, made Cyprus become part of the UN to have the benefits of allies,
common currency with neighbouring countries, Trade relationships, Support financially and military.
In 2011 Paula peoplecantpronouncethisOWA was elected as Chancellor, being the second Female
Chancellor to be elected bringing order to Gender equality and following example from Germany.

Elevation extremes:

Mountain ranges of Cyprus:

Mountain ranges is something I want in my
Utopia to give me protection from Natural

forces such as Storms and floods but also as a

natural defence against militaries because its
much harder to invade Cyprus when firstly, you
are unknown to the land, dont have flat areas,
harder to move around with large amounts of
troops through mountain ranges, villages are
mostly hidden behind or inside mountain
ranges.
Also mountains give protection from strong
winds that come from the sea.
I give up some farm land in exchange and
limited water access but with proper dames
and canal controls my utopia can give water to
these farms throughout the year except during
the summer where next to no rain fall is found
on Cyprus.
Natural resources:
Copper, Pyrites, gypsum, timber, salt, marble, clay,
earth pigment
Land use:
arable land: 9.90%
permanent crops: 3.24%

Natural hazards:
moderate but rare earthquakes, occasional droughts
during summertime

My Utopia has a political system of Parliamentary democracy.
This system is the democratic form of government where with the greatest representation in the
parliament forms the government and its leader becomes the Chancellor for two 5 year terms.
Currently chancellor of Cyprus is none other than Paula peoplecantpronouencethisOWA who is
enforcing Tourism advertisement because she sees a beneficial side of Cypruss not too hot summers
but assured good weather due to it being drought season. She says in an interview that Farming with
global warming and long droughts wont be an eternal source of income for Cyprus and in the past
Cyprus has made itself a name with crystal clear waters, stunning beaches and ruins from antique
generations of Turkish and Greeks setting foot on Cyprus. She sees the financial benefits how taxes
and/or entry fees to ruin sites can be rewarding with the correct global advertisement per Internet
and travel guides.
Due to Cyprus having a democracy as government, the country was able to find out what the rest of
Cypruss representatives find of her idea and it said that she has full support from locals who are
awaiting an increase in sales to tourists.
My Cyprus choose this government to have equality and give a freedom of speech and voting to the
people. The people have more power and this is definitely the more inhabitant friendly government
since my country has suffered lots of power change throughout the centuries and many of the
people are still for the idea of being part of Greece or that Cyprus has been Turkish for centuries and
it should remain that way. But with democracy the people choose their leaders, and even though
there are misunderstanding between the Greeks and Turks, they have to come to conclusion by
teamwork and fairness and with fairness everyone is happy and there is peace. There is a much
lower likelihood that the government would be over thrown because the government is adapting
and always trying to at least some of the parties wishes so that everyone has equality.
My government idol is Germany, Germany has lost everything during the world wars and was
strongly in debt giving up land to neighbouring countries. Saying all that, Germany has been able to
build up its entire Government, make new allies (despite trust issues) and now be one of the
strongest countries in the European Union. In 2015 it won the award for the best country in the
world. From having one of the worst reputations, including war stereotypes, it has managed to climb
the ladder even to the number 1 spot.

Cyprus has a high amount of Self-run farms that are very successful with the large amount of space
Cyprus has with just quite small population (comparison has been done with Singapore Page. 3).
Cyprus also offers a few natural resources being copper, pyrites, gypsum, timber, salt, marble, clay,
earth pigment.
Coppers market price for may has been 2.38USD/lb which is Cypruss main mining element. Cyprus
has a GDP of 350.30 EUR million in the 4th quarter of 2015 from mainly mining but also quarrying and
water supply.

http://atlas.media.mit.edu/en/profile/country/cyp/#Exports

Cypruss GDP of 75.30 EUR million in the 4th quarter of 2015 from Agriculture shows the
successfulness of self-run farms in numbers.
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/cyprus/gdp-from-agriculture

The GDP for construction has had quite the downfall for Cyprus, being 166.2 EUR million in January
2013, dropping to 102.3 EUR million in January 2015 but now rising slightly to 110.9 EUR million in
January 2016.
Due to the massive drops the government wont be focusing on construction is one of the main
sources of income, but now going to try other option like tourism as one of their main sources.
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/cyprus/gdp-from-construction

The GDP for Cyprus during the summer is as expected at its peak due to its spectacular climate and
beaches, but during winter (rainy seasons), the GDP drops drastically because these seasons arent
popular tourist times. Cypruss peak GDP is 358,500 Thousand during Juli 2015 but in February 2016
the GDP drops so far down to only 37,600 Thousand. Showing that the Chancellors idea of Tourism
to be one of the main sources of income isnt a bad idea during the summer. Cypruss natural
landmarks like the beaches and mountain ranges are popular together with the man made ancient
Greek monuments and ruins of Antique generations.
Together with having high import taxes, Cyprus can make lots of money from Tourists, increasing
prices on professional guides and climbing gear, plus having higher taxes on hotels during the
summer especially ones close to the beaches and famous ruins.

The GDP per capita was last recorded in 2014 at 21,852.09 US ranking as
173rd in the world. Chancellor Paula sees this as one of her main goals to
change since Cyprus has also seen better times like in 2008 where its GDP
per capita was at its peak with 26,384.42 US
http://www.tradingeconomics.com/cyprus/gdp-per-capita

Cyprus has a GDP of 145,832 EUR for exports in April 2016. Cyprus mainly exports citrus fruits,
cement, potatoes, clothing, pharmaceuticals, metals and minerals. Its main export partner is the
European Union, which accounts of 50% of all Cypriot trade flows, after is the Middle east with 20%
of Cypruss exports.

Another source of income Cyprus wants to try is fishing. Cyprus is an island surrounded by sea like
any islands. The Mediterranean Sea has a popular but expensive fish due to its large size and
delicacy. The Bluefin Tuna. If Cyprus can specialize on catching this specie it can be a strong source of
income between the country and to export across the Europe and the middle east. Bluefin tunas can
200kg+ and selling for very high prices up to 700,000 US+ for Prime Bluefins that way up to 280kg.
http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/01/06/price-pacific-bluefin-tuna-plummets-iconic-fish-stilltrouble
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluefin_tuna

Another potential source of income Cyprus can do is deforestation. Deforestation can create more
farm land (currently space is not an issue but in the future) and the timber gained can then be sold.
17% of Cyprus is wood land and one of the main trees found on Cyprus are white oaks that go for a
decent price on the markets. One problem is only it ruins the reputation of being a green country
and contributes to global warming which can cause longer droughts for Cyprus which is one of its
main issues currently. Due to not having any lack of space so far this idea will be kept as a last
resort when other income sources start to fail.

My Utopia is going to have trial by jury, this is because with trial by jury both sides of the story is
seen first and made sure no detail of a crime is left out before a decision is made. Once the case is
closed and the true criminal is found, the crime gets analysed. These things are controlled first
before being sent to court, who did the crime, why did he do the crime, who was his target, why was
it his target, what did he gain, what is the criminals record, reputation of the criminal (is there any
sign the criminal will change to a better person).
These things have to be known so that a jury can make a clear decision.
Death penalty is banned in Cyprus due to human rights, but depending on how sever the crime is,
freedom might be taken away and sometimes forced to leave the country.
In a Utopia everyone has to work together and everyone should focus on their specialties. When
people dont fit in and break the law for short cuts such as money, means that they do not fit into
the system. If they dont show any sign of improvement and have a reputation for being
untrustworthy, they will be forced to leave the country.
The Judge makes the decisions on what the punishment is, what the criminal has to do to repay the
community for breaking the law and if necessary what the criminal has to do to repay the victim.
For murder, the criminal for sure has to at least go to jail. Thats the least a criminal can receive for
taking someones life. A minimal of 20 years in Prison. The Prison is on a small island, extending the
northern tip of Cyprus, called the klides islands.
Since Cypriot inhabitants are almost all either Greek or Turkish, there will still be somewhere
criminals can go to if forced out of the country.
Criminals also have a right for lawyer just like a victim.
Jurys decision CAN BE CANCELLED, if the jurys decision is drastically unfair or overkill, by the
government. But it has to be a democratic decision.
Cyprus will have a local police force that will be armed with at least hand guns at all times in case of
emergencies. The police also do manhunts if necessary if a criminal is still on the loose. The police
enforce law and order in cities and smaller towns.
When in custody, the criminal is not treated unfairly and brutally until he is officially spoken guilty
and has been trialled. The criminal is supplied with food and water till hes been trialled.

My Utopia has no official religion or culture to prevent conflict. There will be conflict on which
religion to be enforced since my society is quite diverse, being mainly Greek or Turkish.
My theory for Utopia is that, no society is perfect. Its impossible to have every single last person
happy with their purpose, profit, job and belongings. There are many great societies and
governments in the World that try their best to be perfect but so far no one has accomplished that.
Most of these have very good things about their Country and society but also some negative sides.
My theory is that by getting a bit of everything, things that we know are good by other societies,
such as free health care, and add them up with other positive things from different societies, nations
and cultures. This way my Utopia can get a good combination of great ideas to form the closest thing
there is to a Utopia.
So I allow any person to enter my country, as long as they dont have a criminal record, I allow
anyone to believe in any religion they want, AS LONG AS IT DOESNT AFFECT THE PEOPLE AROUND
HIM. Its also illegal in my Utopia to judge someone for their belief and race, and act differently as
they would to any other citizen. I have the freedom of thought and speech enforced to one
condition that no one else gets affected in any way such as behaviour, physically and conflict about
why someones belief is more correct than other religions.
Culture for food is also accepted, traditions and delicacies are allowed again under the condition
that no one else gets affect. A good example would be the Durian fruit. In Singapore its a delicacy
but because of its strong odour that affect nearby people, its illegal.
Being diverse is also good to be tourist friendly. Tourist can find easily something familiar from their
home, such as food or clothing. Everything being accepted no matter what race or religion means
that Cyprus is attractive for new citizens. With new citizens, new forms of income and new things
are introduced to the market, increasing Cypruss GDP.
The official language of Cyprus is English, again to avoid conflict and to be tourist friendly since its
the official global language. Though most of Cypruss current citizens are Greek the second language
would be Greek but it wouldnt be officially stated to again avoid conflict and to have equality for all
other none Greek citizens.

My Utopia has a flag that represents many different things. First we start with the colours of the
borders. They are green and blue, blue because Cyprus is an island which is surrounded by water.
And water plays an important for Cyprus since farming is one of the main factors for Cypruss income
and self-run farms are very successful that use the vast amount of space efficiently. Green because
Cyprus isnt that small of an island, but has a rather small population not using up much space. Much
of Cypruss land is untouched therefore meaning its very green, also 17% of the island is woodlands.
Main income of Cyprus is again agriculture which represented in the colour green because of crops.
The 2 rock and stone filled curves represent the 2 mountain rages Cyprus has, the Troodos and
Kyrenia mountain ranges. They are found in the centre of Cyprus, covering basically half of the
island. They are long up to 160km thats why the curves are quite thin but long. Also the Mountain
ranges are important because of the worshipped mountain, Mount Olympus, because it gives
protection against invasions and natural forces, because canals through the mountain ranges
provide the Island with water and the mountains are used for mining, which is also one of the main
source of incomes for Cyprus since many elements can be gathered. The Main element exported is
Copper which is why a copper rhombus is found in the centre of the flag, where the mountain ranges
collide.
The 4 silhouettes found on the flag mean: Equality, teamwork, peace and the silhouette of Cyprus,
under all other 3 silhouettes, is to clearly identify and show the island shape and to who this flag
belongs, but more importantly to show what can be accomplished together as a group, with peace,
equality, teamwork. It may be a silhouette of Cyprus, but it should be seen as a silhouette of Utopia!
