INTRODUCTION

Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
TITLE:
The level of perception among Malaysian mass communication students on the
comparison between American and British Zombie movies: An approach of Miseen-scene.

1.1 Introduction/ Background

Zombies portrays as reanimated dead people who lurks to kill people to feast on
living human flesh classifying in Horror and Fantasy genre. (Bishop, 2010)
Zombie movie been part of the classic cinema since the early 1930s (Dandle,
2007). At least 55 zombie movies was released in 2014 alone, now they have no
choice but to be reviewed as a separate subgenre of Horror genre (Henderson,
2014). The Zombie genre is getting popular year by year in many country.

British zombie movie is important in the history of the genre because they
helped keep the incandescence alive.

In America, after the influx of poorly

constructed zombie-themed films in 1950s failed at the box office, American

producers abandoned zombie altogether focusing on other genre such as
Vampire, Frankenstein, werewolves, mummies and science fiction, causing the
zombie film a new life abroad in British cinemas, living British film makers
making low budgeted zombie movies and helped the zombie genre gain
popularity in Britain. (Pirie & Peter , 2001). Britain cinemas still believe Zombie
movies have its place to them.

On the contrary, American film makers are also interest on zombie-movies lately
and made big budgeted zombie movies by diverging other genre in the movies
like comedy diverge with zombie genre movies Despite that of Zombie movies
didnt sell in America 20 years ago, the Americans Zombie movies proven to
become blockbuster hit in Hollywood as well as world-wide cinemas (Russel,
2014).The Zombie culture has been arising in many countries and the competitor
market is growing large.

The acceptance of Malaysians on zombie movies are encouraging and Malaysians had
produced zombie movies of their own. Malaysian filmmakers choose to take zomedy genre
or zom-com genre meaning zombie genre diverge with comedy genre. Malaysians do events
such as The Zombie Run Malaysia based on the American Run for Your Lives Zombie
5K, except its Malaysianized where the zombie culture arise having many activities (Koh,
2013). The top Malaysian Multilanguage zombie movies includes Zombie Kampong Pisang
(2008) a Malaysian Malay language zombie movie, Yi lu you Jiang shi (2013) Malaysian
Mandarin language zombie movie and lastly, Vere Vahli Ille (2013) Malaysian Tamil
language zombie movie.

1.2 Problem statement

When it comes to American Zombie movies and British Zombie movies, society
always assumes that the American movies are better than the British movies,
this research is to identify what are the perception of Malaysian mass
communication students behalf on their knowledge in film subject regarding of
its comparison of the Mise-en-scene in both American and British Zombie
movies.

1.3 Research Objective

1. To identify what are the Malaysian mass communication students perception

of British and American Zombie movies
2. To find out what are the perception on the contrast of Mise-en-scene between
the American and the British zombie movies.
3. To investigate the acceptance on the Mise-en-scene of American and British
Zombie movies among the Malaysian mass communication students.

1.4 Research question

1. How the Mise-en-scene plays a part in the American and British Zombie
movies?
2. What are the perception of Malaysian mass communications students on
British and American Zombie movies?
3. Why is the Mise-en-scene of the American Zombie genre movie is better than
the British Zombie genre movie?
4. Does Malaysian prefer American Zombie movies rather than the British
Zombie movies?

1.5 Hypothesis
Malaysian mass communication students feels that American Zombie movies has
better Mise-en-scene key aspects then the British Zombie movies.

1.6 Research Methods

The first research method which is used is the Quantitative research method
which is the methodical empirical analysis of evident spectacles via statistics,
carefully worked-out or computational methods with a hypothesis. This project
will concentrate on 120 mass communication students around Malaysia with a
questionnaire survey. Secondary-sources includes, biography, academic-books,
academic-journal, magazine, newspaper, online-research, online-journals, e-zines
and even documentary will be included. Most of the secondary method which
used are from online-materials and academic sources.

1.7 Limitations
Due to the 3 month given time period, I used 2 months as my research for the
introduction, literature review and research methodology by a concentrated
survey on Malaysian mass communication students pry to their knowledge on
Mise-en-scene and movie genre, completing the assessments by the 2 nd
November. My goal is to interview 20 students each day starting from the 26 th
October to 31st October 2015 hopefully I would get to interview a maximum of
120 mass communication students leaving me to focus on the data analysis
and the conclusion in November before the deadline on 27 th November 2015.

LITERATURE REVIEW

LITERATURE REVIEW:
2.1 The Origin of Zombie Genre

When there is no more room in

hell, the Dead will walk the earth

George A. Romero, Dawn of the Dead 1978

Monster of new age is no other than zombie, and noteworthy thing about this is
absence of utopian imaginings (Banash, 2013). Zombies portrays as reanimated
dead people that lurks to kill people to feast on living human flesh classifying in
both Horror and Fantasy genre (William & Hogle, 2010). Zombie movie has been
a part of the classic cinema since the early 1930s. Victor Hugo Halpern was one
of the early person who directed a zombie movie called White Zombie in 1932
(Dandle, 2007). Zombie projects started to concomitant to consumerism and
became a culture of its own called the zombie culture (Christensen, 2015). At
least 55 zombie genre movies was released in 2014 alone that now they have no
choice but to be reviewed as a separate subgenre of Horror genre (Henderson,
2014). Zombie genre is known as the story of two bodies in decay, the individual
corpses of the undead and the social body as a whole (Hunt et al, 2013). Zombie
abridged to three classifications which is somnambulist, cannibalistic corpse
and lastly infected living. ( Strohecker, 2012). The Geneses of zombies
instigated with 'Afro-Caribbeans spiritual belief of Voodoo, where people being
controlled as laborers by powerful dark black magic spell. Today, many still fear
the practice and aware its still practiced in secrecy (Mason, 2013). Zombies
movies claimed inner becomings have outer parallel through physical revolution
of horror film. When humans become monsters, viewers engage bodily-changes
and discover defied biotic and artistic standards on narrative and empirical levels
(Hakola, 2011). Zombie Genre known as predominant monsters in cinemas of the
second-half of the twentieth-century (Lauro & Embry, 2008) and an auxiliary
renaissance or rebirth in American cinemas in past years.
2.2 British Zombie Movies
9

The word zombie enters the English lands in 1800s with two notions, the devil
worship and African revolts against white colonial rule. (Colavito, 2013). In 1808,
a French novel made reference to African slaves believing in zombi, described
as devil that the slaves, being inferior to white people, worship in their illiteracy.

In relation with zombie movies, social-texts designate the illustration and

fragmentation of British culture respectively and the zombie in relation to
individual and National identity said British Film critique and the Northwestern
University School of Communication film Professor Dr Jeffrey Scones in 2013.

British zombie movie is important in the history of the genre because they
helped keep the flame alive. (Pirie &

Peter , 2001). In America, after the

incursion of poorly made zombie movies in the 1950s, American film-makers

abandoned making zombie movies overall by concentrating on other Horror Subgenres such as Vampire, Frankenstein, werewolves, mummies and science fiction
which reasons the zombie film a new life abroad in British cinemas, living British
film-makers making low budgeted zombie movies example Doctor Blood's Coffin
(196o) and The Earth Dies Screaming (196o). This aided the zombie genre
gaining fame in Britain and till this very day British has made zombie movie as
their priority when it comes to horror genre.

10

2.3 American Zombie Movies

"Zombies don't represent anything in my mind except a global change of some

kind. And the stories are about how people respond or fail to respond to this.
That's really all they've represented to me" said American famous film director
George Romero whom is well-known for his zombie movies.

Viral-zombie of modern-day horror fictions arrived being popular-imagination in

American films in 1968, George Andrew Romero movie Night of the Living-Dead
characterize zombie movies having 3 physiognomies which is Corps becomes
reanimated and roam in quest of live victims is to mutilation, Zombies only can
be slayed by brain damage and Zombie bite will turn any living victims into
zombies themselves (Orpana, 2011). Initially Zombie movies was started at
American cinemas before it hits to Britain cinemas.

Zombie tracking has been over seventy-five years of evolution in American

cinemas because of widespread array of gothic cultural and also described as in
a way of a show for politically aware and monetary worries of American people
(Neail, 2014). Monstrous physiognomies has pertained America ever since
George Andrew Romeros paradigm shift in 1960s, zombifying septicity,
violence and swarm attacks, screening in American zombie cinema of the newage, voices a reaction to the manifest and dormant ferocity of the State
apparatuses (Buffett, 2014). However, American film-makers are interest on
zombie movies In current Era, and made magnificently big-budgeted zombie
movies by diverging other genre in the movies, for example world war z (2013)
and I am Legend (2007) . American zombie movies has become a blockbuster
hit in Hollywood and worldwide cinemas , Even Big stars as Will Smith or Brad
Pitt are enthusiastic to partake zombie movie despite of zombie movies didn't
sell in 20 years ago. Zombie culture has been arising in many countries and the
competitor market is growing large (Russel, 2014). This gives Zombie movies
coming back to the states and becoming more popular in America compare to
Britain.

11

2.4

Malaysian acceptance of Zombie genre movies

In terms of Zombie movies, the acceptance of Malaysians are boosting up year

by year and Malaysian filmmakers had produced zombie movies of their own.
Their themes are on zomedy or zom-com sub-genres meaning zombie genre
diverge with comedy genre.

The most popular examples of Malaysian zombie movies are Zombie Kampong
Pisang (2008), Yi Lu You Jiang Shi (2013) and Vere Vahli Ille (2013). Just as the
tagline said by Kat Rosenfield that Zombies all fun and games, until someone
gets bit, Malaysians do events such as The Zombie Run Malaysia based on the
American Run for Your Lives Zombie 5K, except its Malaysianized, having
activities such as chase and run, zombie costume competition, a tutorial of
zombie make up, zombie apocalypse campaign and more.

They even sells zombie genre books written by Malaysians example Zombie
Fever Malaysia Outbreak by B M Hodges (Koh, 2013). This proves that the
acceptance of Zombie genre in Malaysia is very encouraging and Malaysian
people know what the Zombie theme is all about.

12

2.5 Mise-en-scene aspects of Zombie movies

Emile Joachim Constant Puvo, a French metteur-en-scne active in 19 th and early

20th centuries said that between the British and American movies, Mise-en-scene
is focuses on set-design, lighting, space, compositions, costume, make-up and
hair-styles, acting, Film-stock and Aspect-ratio (Broadwell & Thompson, 2010).
Mise-en-scene is the chief contrivance film-criticizers will use to judge.

In terms of sets and props, zombie films focuses on streets and beaten-down
vehicles screening a juxtaposition in amid divisions whereas camerawork and
illumination captures the physiognomies of the zombie movies captivating lowkey lightings, screening audiences the atmospheres are engaged in a darker
state, for instance we grasp a shaky-camera once zombies dashing the main
hero and likewise screening a long-shot in edict to submerse us to hooked on the
domain of apocalypse (Ollie, 2014). When we eagle-eyed on Mise-en-Scene and
essentials that arisen within the movie, Zombie movies internments the
tendency of survival-horror and brings zombie genre with its clever.

In zombie films, the foremost crutches are weapons. These embrace from guns,
rifles, knives, swords, baseball bats and more killing-objects. The Props include
items as torches and the use of key-lights, like the lights flickering, or going off. It
creates tension and atmosphere, making audience intricate. Vehicles are also
used in zombie movies to upsurge the pace of the film, for instance zombies
chasing a carriage and wearisome to get in. Vehicles signify the awareness of
remoteness. In zombie movies, towns and cities displayed as vacant or
uninhibited equally reliefs the audience to imagine what it would be like in a
13

zombie world (James, 2014). The key usages of Mise-en-scene in zombie films is
the use of make-up in order to scare the audience and to create this horror
theme (Coker & Bapstick, 2014) .Make-up throughout the zombie contains the
same motif of blood and gore.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

3.1 Quantitative research method

The 1st research method which is used is the Quantitative research
method which is the methodical empirical analysis of evident spectacles
via statistics, carefully worked-out or computational methods with a
hypothesis. This project will concentrate on 120 mass communication
students around Malaysia targeting at least 30 questionnaire survey
papers distributed on different mass communication programs such as
American transfer degree mass communication programme, Malaysian
mass

communication

degree

programme,

Hertfordshire

mass

communication degree programme, Wollongong mass communication

degree programme, mass communication Diploma programme and
others.

The questions distributed will be on the confirmation of the students are

Malaysian citizen along with their personal details comprise a survey of
area of interest joining the mass communication programme, including
the research topic of evaluation on the Satisfaction of the Quality of Mise15

En-Scene in British and American Zombie Genre Movies and lastly four
open ended questions highlighting subjects questions on How the Mise-enscene plays a part in the American and British Zombie movies , What are the
perception of Malaysian mass communications students on British and American
Zombie movies together with the research on Does the Mise-en-scene of the
American Zombie genre movie performs better than the British Zombie genre
movie and to identify whether Malaysian mass communication students prefer
American Zombie movies rather than the British Zombie movies.

3.2 Secondary-sources
The Secondary-sources includes, biography, academic-books, academicjournal, magazine, newspaper, online-research, online-journals, e-zines
and even documentary will be included. Most of the secondary method
which used are from online-materials and academic sources where the
referencing will be distributed in the end of the project paper.
