INTRODUCTION/MOTIVATION:
The teacher will verbally review the characteristics of a Fairy Tale: Once Upon a Time,
Magical Events, Talking Animals, Royal Characters, and A Happily Ever After. The teacher will
record these characteristics on the dry erase board. The teacher will then explain that they are
going to be listening to the teacher read the story of Beauty and the Beast. The story will be told
from the Disney website, using the Smart Board. Throughout the story the teacher will stop and
give students to pick out characteristics of a fairy tale and discuss them.
INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES:
1. Once the story is completed, the teacher will have the students list off characters that
were mentioned in the story and the teacher will write the list of characters onto the dry
erase board for students to reference later in their writing.
2. The teacher will review with the students what the point of view was for this particular
story.
a. Students should respond that there was a narrator telling the story.
3. The teacher will then explain to the students that they will be writing their own Fractured
Fairy Tale from one of the characters point of view from Beauty and the Beast.
4. The list of fairy tale characteristics will be displayed in front of the room to encourage
students to use components of a fairy tale to make up their story.
5. The teacher will show the teacher model of the fractured fairy tale lapbook-mini and
explain how it was assembled.
a. The title page and written component will be stapled together on the left spine.
b. This portion will be glued onto the inside of the manila folder.
c. The two pieces of the front cover will be glued onto the front of the manila folder
onto the two separate flaps.
6. Once the students have chosen their character, the teacher will hand out the writing paper
for the assignment. It will be explained that students are expected to fill at least one page
of the paper given, but are welcome to write more.
7. The students will be reminded to re-read their written component over to themselves and
to revise their work as needed, prior to showing their work to a teacher.
8. As students finish the written portion, with guidance and support from the teacher and
peers, the teacher will hand out the cover sheet for students to write their Title and name
on.
9. As students finish this step, they will be verbally instructed to cut out the pieces they
have completed thus far and bring them up to be stapled on the left spine.
10. Students will then be given the front cover for them to color and cut out into two
pieces.
11. As students complete the front cover they will be instructed to glue them onto the front of
their lapbook-mini.
