i Pee People 1* e Programme Sexuality and Disability People 1st Programme Sexuality & Disability Definition: (World Health Organisation ¢ Sexuality is an integral part of the personality of everyone ¢ It is a basic need and aspect of being human that cannot be separated from other aspects of life ¢ While not all choose to be sexually active all individuals are sexual beings Myths: x People with disabilities are non-sexual X Sex is associated with youth & physical attractiveness X Parents with a disability make poor parents x People with an intellectual disability are sexual deviants * Sexuality is a problem that we must control & manage x It can get out of control very easility if we are not careful * We must avoid encouraging people to be affectionate and not give too many hugs that might be misunderstood Facts: y Sexual expression is a natural & important part of life y Information needs to be in a concrete format v Opportunities for sexual expression & exploration can be limited Y Privacy is a major issue (if discovered there is negativity shown) ¥ More children are having sexual identity issues at an earlier age What is Sexual Expression? © Intercourse © Masterbation © Oral Sex © Petting/Hugging © Touching O Flirting © Talking © Watching Movies © Reading Books/Magazines When is masturbation unhealthy?? © In public ® Too frequently to the exclusion of most else Onset of ricer has i: been connected with iy | Weigh [ore be oe) Sex & The Law Can be confusing... Dealing with Adolescence x Puberty is a time of rapid growth in which sexuality will play a major role x Growing interest in sexuality & Anxiety about body image ve Peers come first yx Need for privacy and time to work things out ve Desire for social acceptance** **This is particularly difficult to get the special needs individual to understand - “That's not socially acceptable”. The special needs individual would be more susceptible to the ‘sex for favours’ path. Eg “if you have sex I will give you this bag of lollies” Youths need help with (but do not want to talk about): & Wet Dreams %& Masterbation (must wash hands after!) % Sexual Experience (not ours ~ set boundaries) % Sexual Feelings (tingling, erections, sexy feelings) % Particular sexual practices Talking Sex... % Questions always come at the wrong time for us ‘% Should be casual % Be clear about what you want to communicate (Watch your wordsl!
