Summer Math Menu

Students Entering Grades 5 & 6


Purpose
It is important for all students to review math concepts, skills,
and practices during the summer. Students should continue to
develop their conceptual understanding, their procedural skill and
fluency, and their ability to apply both of these to solve
problems. Intentional practice of math skills, concepts, and
practices will help students reinforce this years learning as well
as help to prepare them for the upcoming year. The tasks
included here can serve as a way to engage your family in fun and

What Parents/Guardians May Do to Support:


Make a practice plan and help your child set goals.
Recognize your childs strengths.
Help your child to identify the areas of mathematics he/she would
like to focus on over the summer.
Have fun solving problems together and creating your own new
math challenges.
Create a system with your child to monitor and track progress.

Directions
The menu does not need to be returned in the fall, but we hope
you complete many of the tasks and use them to develop and
explore your own math ideas.

Blank paper or a journal for problem-solving and creating, ruler

How can you keep your math skills sharp? Practice with your family and friends throughout the summer. The tasks included are suggested
opportunities for learning. You are encouraged to develop and explore your own math ideas too. The Math Menu need not be returned in the fall.

coins in your piggy bank or
their change containers
and/or wallets.

Plan a Virtual Trip


Use www.expedia.com as a
resource, plan a week-long
trip to your favorite
destination. Calculate the
cost of round-trip airplane
tickets, hotel and
approximate food costs for
your family.

Solve a Sudoko puzzle.

Are you going on a road


trip this summer?
-Map it out
-Find the shortest route
-Calculate mileage
-Calculate gas cost, based
on miles per gallon

With parent/guardian
permission, sign up for Fun
Nightly Math. You will receive
an email each afternoon
containing a cool fact followed
by math questions. Enjoy five
quick minutes of number fun
daily. Or, check out the archived
daily math.

Keep track of the number of


minutes and pages you read
in July. Calculate the total
minutes and pages read for
the month. Calculate the
average pages / minutes
read per week.

Play Scrabble; be the


score keeper. Or, play
monopoly; be the
banker.

Look for math in nature.


For example,

Plan a meal for your family


using the weekly grocery
flyer. Figure out the cost of
the grocery bill and the cost
per person.

Measure, weigh and


compare/contrast things.
Ideas to consider include:
water balloons

Pick out a recipe to


cook or bake. Figure
out how to half it,
double it, or even
triple it.

When you dine out,


estimate the cost of the
bill. Based on the actual
bill, mentally calculate a
10%, 15% and 20% tip.

Plan a lemonade and/or flower


stand. Calculate how much the
supplies will cost? What will
your profit be if you sold 20
cups/flowers? How much
could you potentially make if
your stand was open for one
week? With permission, try it.
Geometry Scavenger Hunt
Try to find the following: cube,
triangular prism, trapezoid,
rectangular prism, intersecting
lines, parallel lines and spheres.
Practice your
addition/multiplication
combinations. Use a deck of cards.
Remove the kings, queens and
jacks. Shuffle the cards and deal
out two piles. Flip one card from
each pile and add/multiply the
two numbers. Repeat. Or, practice
on www.xtramath.org.
