Title: President & CEO
Education: I was accepted at several four-year
colleges, but really wanted to go to acting school.

provided I could find a way to support myself while
struggling. To fulfill my end of the agreement,
I attended the 2-year Katherine Gibbs College

As a child, what did you want you be when you
grew up: I wanted to be a teacher or a movie star.
First job: I worked as an executive secretary in a

accomplishment is growing a great company. Daniel Gale had two
offices and 14 sales associates when I started. It is now a thriving,
major real estate organization with 27 offices, more than 800 sales

GEORGE ANDRIOPOULOS
6C I LONG ISLAND BUSINESS NEWS

The best advice I received is: I have received great

advice from a lot of my mentors. My father, my first
boss out of college and countless others. Today, Id
like to share an inspirational quote from one of my
favorite movies, Rocky. Let me tell you something
you already know. The world aint all sunshine and
rainbows. Its a very mean and nasty place, and I
dont care how tough you are, it will beat you to
your knees and keep you there permanently if you
let it. You, me or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life.
But it aint about how hard ya hit. Its about how
hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take
and keep moving forward. Thats how winning is done! Now, if you
know what youre worth, then go out and get what youre worth. But
ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you
aint where you wanna be because of him, or her or anybody! Cowards
do that and that aint you! Youre better than that!
Favorite book: For One More Day, by Mitch Albom
Most surprising fact about you: I pivoted from a 13-year career in the
medical industry to management consulting in 2013.
How would you have classified yourself in high school: Full of
potential with limitless possibilities

ROB BASSO
Company Name: Advantage Payroll Services
Title: CEO
Education: BA, history; Hofstra University
As a child, what did you want you be when you
grew up: I have always been interested in education
and I thought that being a social studies teacher
would be the direction that I would go. However,
finding a teaching job after I graduated college was
a challenge. I entered the business world and now I
lead a company. As a CEO, I am a leader and a teacher.
I mentor my staff and I regularly teach them about
business strategies and sales techniques.
First job: I always had an entrepreneurial spirit. My
first job was paperboy. It was a great job; I got up early
each day and delivered papers. I learned about customer service, hard
work and the independence of being my own boss.
Proudest professional accomplishment: We just celebrated our
20th anniversary at Advantage Payroll and are very proud to have
many long-term employees contributing to our success. It is humbling
to think of how far we have come. From opening our doors with just
myself and no clients to today where we have a thriving business with
close to 3,000 clients, almost 50 employees and two locations. We have
experienced growth every year, even during economic downturns and
the Great Recession.
The hottest topic in my field right now is: Human capital
management solutions are becoming more important to small
business owners. Finding and keeping talented people is critical

for success in all business sectors. The tasks

and responsibilities involved in HR and benefits
management are often overwhelming. We provide
solutions in this space and help businesses grow and
remain competitive.
What does it take to be good at your job: Having
a vision of where you want the company to go and
staffing it properly to achieve those goals. As the
head of my company, I know it is critical to listen to
customers and study my marketplace. This knowledge
allows me to plan strategically and provide products
and services that the marketplace not only wants, but
needs. I recruit and retain talented individuals who
play an instrumental role in achieving goals.
Civic/charitable organization involvement:
Advantage has been involved in supporting many organizations. It is
important for businesses to support charities and business groups.
I was an honoree of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, my team
has helped build homes for Habitat for Humanity and I was a founding
board member of the Long Island Elite. I boxed in the Long Island Fight
for Charity and have been honored by the American Heart Association.
The best advice I received is: Focus on your strengths, not
weaknesses.
Favorite book: The Speed of Trust, by Steven Covey.
Most surprising fact about you: I learned to ride a motorcycle when I
was 10.

Silverman, one of my partners at G4 and a

Proudest professional accomplishment:
Founding Long Island Temps. Early in my career I

that I gained the skills and foundation necessary
to start my own company.
The hottest topic in my field right now is:

What does it take to be good at your job: Doing

pride and community in everything that we do and everyone that we
serve.
Civic/charitable organization involvement: An integral part of Long
Island Temps is representing those who live and work here. Therefore
it was natural for our company to want to give back to the community.

Long Island Temps has been a proud sponsor of

many of Long Islands nonprofit and charitable
organizations, including LI2Day, a grassroots

How would you have classified yourself in high school: I didnt

Title: President & CEO
Education: BA in psychology, University of Illinois
As a child, what did you want you be when you

Proudest professional accomplishment: I am
most proud of the fact that I have worked my way
up through the ranks. I began as a direct-care
worker in a group home for the developmentally
disabled and ended up as a CEO of an agency
that serves the developmentally disabled as
well as people with epilepsy and mental health
challenges.
The hottest topic in my field right now is: The impact of the
increase in the minimum wage on the ability of not-for-profit agencies
to maintain an effective workforce. We do not have the ability to
raise prices to cover the increased costs: Our rates are determined by
government. Without the partnership and support of government,
agencies like mine would be unable to recruit and maintain the human

with their training and skill.

What does it take to be good at your job: Much

of my job involves keeping a lot of plates spinning
