TECHNIQUES ON
RETENTION
INTRODUCTION
The human mind was a complex element of our cognitive
abilities, and memories can be either verbal or non-verbal
(Frost,2015)
Memory was the retention of information over a period of
time.
THEORY
In Fleming's model, sometimes referred to VARK learning styles, learners were
identified by whether they have a preference for visual learning (pictures,
movies, diagrams), auditory learning (music, discussion, lectures), reading and
writing (making lists, reading textbooks, taking notes), or kinesthetic learning
(movement, experiments, hands-on activities).
In relation to Flemings study, a theory of Howard Gardners multiple
intelligences wherein Gardner discuss that an individual have different kinds of
minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Retention- The score of the participants will get after conducting three
memory techniques. There will be 20 words that the participants will
memorize.
Mnemonics- The memorization technique given to group one. For the
mnemonic technique, the participants will be taught a word using the
initial of every word.
Writing- The memorization technique given to group two. The
participants will be asked to write down the word that the researchers
give them.
Pictures- The pictures that was presented to group three. The researches
will flash every picture for seven seconds each.
METHOD OF RESEARCH
In the conducted study the researchers used experimental
method in order to find out the effects of different teaching
techniques on the recall of students.
Experimental method is the procedure used in which
studies the cause and effect relationship between variables.
RESULT
With the score of 193, the writing method is considered as
the effective method on teaching students to memorize
words.
CONCLUSIONS
Picture method group is less effective in retention than
mnemonics method group and writing method group.
