Aims and Objectives:
To provide an understanding of the basic CMOS technology and circuit design principles
and introduce architecture and design concepts underlying modern complex VLSI.
MOS Transistor Theory
12 Hrs
Introduction to MOS Transistor Theory, Ideal I-V Characteristics, Basic DC MOS Static and
dynamic Characteristics, Velocity Saturation and Mobility Degradation, Channel Length
Modulation, Body Effect, Subthreshold Conduction, Junction Leakage, CMOS Inverter DC
Characteristics, Beta Ratio Effects, Noise Margin,
CMOS Logic Design, Fabrication and Layout
8 Hrs
The Inverter, NAND Gate, Combinational Logic, NOR Gate, Compound Gates, Pass Transistor
and Transmission Gates, Tristates, Multiplexers, Latches and Flip Flops. CMOS Fabrication,
Fabrication Process, Layout Design Rules, Stick Diagrams and Layout.
Circuit Characterization and Performance Estimation
8Hrs
Introduction to RC Delay Models, Linear Delay Models, Logical effort, Parasitic Delay, Delay in
Logic Gate, Delay in Multistage Logic Networks. Choosing the best number of stages. Power
Dissipation: static dissipation, dynamic dissipation, Low Power Design.
Logic Structures

Introduction to Circuit Families - Ratioed circuits, Pass Transistor Circuits, Dynamic circuits and
its issues. Domino logic, Cascode voltage Switch Logic.
Verilog HDL.
12Hrs
VLSI Design flow. Basic constructs in Verilog, Behavioual Modelling with continous
Assignments, Basic Constructs, Behavioural Modelling with Always Blocks, FSM, Parametrized
Modules, Structural Primitives, Test Benches, Pitfalls.
