At the end of this learning experience students would be able to

Recognise the contributions of our East Indian ancestors to our


society
Including food, religion, dress, music, dance, craft, language

Set Induction:
Students are given a brief history lesson about the first arrival of East Indians
from India in the year 1845 using picture cut outs of India, Trinidad and the
sea. The teacher describes their struggles on the boat and the reason they
came to Trinidad. The struggles include a cramped ship, hardly any food,
water, place to sleep etc. They came to work on the Sugar Cane Estate
(cutting cane) which at the time was a rich industry.

Learning Activity
Students are read a story about the first arrival of the Indians in 1845 using
pictures which illustrate:

Where they lived
What they brought
What impact they have made to society

organisers to make notes about what they learnt from the pictures and the
story of the East Indians.

Students create a scrapbook of pictures of different aspects brought to


Trinidad and Tobago by the East Indians and make presentations to the
class. Each child may choose a different topic.
