Mass Moment of Inertia - Evaluation

A.

General
(1)

This task gives the procedure to calculate and write the new mass moment of inertia of the
elevator after a repair and the gain in the mass moment of inertia after the elevator is
repainted.

(2)

Make sure that the mass moment of inertia is always lower than or equal to the operational
limit. If the mass moment of inertia is higher than the operational limit, a dangerous flight
condition can occur.

(3)

When a repair adds mass to the elevator (as per the SRM task) or after the repainting, you
must find the new mass moment of inertia. This is to make sure that the new mass moment
of inertia is not higher than the operational limit.

(4)

When the aircraft is delivered, the mass moment of inertia is lower than the operational limit.
The mass moment of inertia must stay lower than or equal to the operational limit, even after
you do procedures such as repaint or repair of the elevator.

(5)

If you repaint the elevator, measure the elevator mass and write it .
NOTE: It is necessary to calculate the moment of inertia (RMI).

(6)

(7)

(8)

There is a plate attached to the elevator front spar (Figure 501) that must be used to:

Verify the values of the mass moment of inertia of the elevator (operational limit and
mass moment of inertia - manufactured);

Write the new values after repair or repaint procedures.

Contact Embraer if:

1.

The mass moment of inertia is higher than the operational limit.

2.

The plate where the mass moment of inertia is written goes out of view.

3.

You are not sure about the mass moment of inertia.

Mass Moment of Inertia - Calculation

SUBTASK 700-002-A

(3)

Definition of terms (Figure 502):

(a)

Mass Moment of Inertia (MI) is the mass moment of inertia around the hinge line.
It is given in kg.m.

(b)

Repair Mass Moment of Inertia (RMI) is the gain in the mass moment of inertia
after a repair to the elevator. It is given in kg.m.

(c)

Moment Arm (d) is the perpendicular distance from the repair center of gravity
(Cg) to the hinge line. It is given in m.

(d)

Repair Mass Added (RMA) is the quantity of mass added to the elevator after a
repair. It is given in kg.

Calculate the mass added to the elevator, as follows:

(a)

If the elevator is repainted without stripping, the RMA does not need to be
calculated. Add the value of 0.14 kg.m to the last value of mass moment of
inertia written on the engraving plate. This value will be the new RMI. Compare
the new RMI according to the item 3.(d).

(b)

If the elevator is stripped before the painting procedure, weigh the elevator before
stripping and after painting. The difference between these values will be the
RMA. This value will be used to define the new RMI, which will be added to the
latest value written on the engraving plate. Calculate the new RMI according to
the item 3.

(c)

If the elevator is repaired or repainted, refer to the applicable SRM repair task for
instructions to calculate the RMA or weigh the elevator according to item 2.(b).

Calculate the new mass moment of inertia (RMI) after a redoing procedure, as follows:
(a)

Find the moment arm (d).

NOTE: If the elevator is repainted with stripping, the moment arm (d) is 0.231 m.

(b)

Calculate the repair mass moment of inertia through the formula RMI = RMA x d2.

(c)

Add the value of the RMI you obtained to the last value written on the plate that is
attached to the elevator front spar. This is the new RMI.

(d)

Compare the new RMI with the operational limit written on the same plate:
