Bodybuilding

Definitions
Bodybuilding is the process of enlargening
thus, strengthening the muscles through
physical exercise.
Physics deals with the behavior as well as the
structure of matter. Generally, there is
classical physics and modern physics.
The following will discuss how certain
principles of classical physics are related to
bodybuilding.
Work
Which basically means the work done on an object by a constant force is the magnitude of the
product of the displacment and the force.
Therefore, the amount of force applied to an object as well as the distance it will travel
contribute to the overall work applied on an object.
The same can be applied to bodybuilding. Take a weightlifter who must power clean a barbell
for instance:
The amount of force apllied to the weight as well as the distance
in which it must be raised over the trainers head contribues to the overall
work the weight lifter exerts.
Power
Power is the rate at which work is done which is given by the following equation:
p = w/t
In bodybuilding, an athlete must not only apply a certain amount of force in odrer to move the
weight, but must also do so quickly enough for the weight to be pulled off of the ground.
Lets say for instance, a bodybuilder is deadlifting 600lbs.
Progress(Momentum)
In physics, the basic formula for momentum is as follows: p = mv (momentum = mass x velocity)
Momentum can be a vital part of bodybuilding/weight training depending on the exercise being
executed.
For instance, in compund movements such as the bench press, deadlift, and squat the athlete is
required to use momentum in completing these heavier lifts. This is because often the weight is
so heavy that the athlete must alter the velocity at which they are lifting it (increased velocity).
In another sense critical velocity can aslo be taken into account. Say for instance, someone
must bench press 500lbs for 5 repetitions:
In order to ensure that they are able to execute 5 reps,
Gravity
Conclusion
Understanding physics concepts and being able to apply them to bodybuilding
can lead to knowledge that enables us to live a healthier lifestyle. Exercise is
necessary in preserving a healthy body, thus helping us live longer. Physics
can be applied to any aspect of life and this knowledge can be used to help
individuals prosper in their chosen profession.
