UpsandDownsofDemocracy

Sinceearly1770stherehasbeenamajorincreaseofdemocracyinAmericaandits
government.Democracyin1776didntchangemuchuntiltheendof1920.Americanswere
determinedtogettheirnaturalbornrightsandmaketheirvoicesbeheardthehighworldof
governmentandpolitics.FromAprilof1865to1919womenandAfricanAmericanswere
fightingfortheirrighttovote.Although,AfricanAmericanmengottheirrightbeforethe
womenweallgotequalsuffrage.WithintheUnitedStatesWomanSuffrage,theReconstitution
Amendments,andachangeinlaborunionsareallcontributingelementstotheexpansionof
democracyintheUnitedStatesbetween17761920.Thesetopicsarewhatbroughtthe
democracywehaveintheUnitedstatestoday.
Intheyear1790,wasthetimewhenpropertyrequirementshitAmerica.Accordingto
SandraOpdyckeTheRoutledgeHistoricalAtlasofWomeninAmericaitshowsushow
women'ssuffragewasinAmericanandhowitwaseffected.Opdyckeshowsushowsegregated
theUnitedStateswasbetweentheyears18901919.TheWomansSuffragemapshowsus
whichstatesadaptedtotheideaofwomenhavingasayingovernmentandwhichstatesdidnot
supportwomenhavingrights.TheNorthgavetheirwomenasaysoingovernment,whereasthe
Southdidnotwantwomentohaveanythingtodowithingovernment.Bytheendof1919only
themWestandtheNorthhadsomesuffrageforwomen,andwelltheSouthdidnothaveany.

Essentiallytheseviewsonsuffragegaveusaninsightonhowpeoplewantedtohaveasay
withingovernment,andhowpeoplewereupforchangeintheUnitedStates.Withthesedrastic
viewsofsuffrageitmadetheUnitedStatesseemasiftheyweretwoseparatecountriessharing
thesamegrounds.
AsecondcontributingfactortowardthedevelopmentofdemocracyintheUnitedStates
between17761920isthecreationoftheReconstructionAmendments.Theseamendmentsare
statingtherighttovote,theabolishmentofslavery,andthatifyouwerebornornaturalizedin
theUnitedStatesyouautomaticallygetthesamerightsasothers.Essentiallywithoutthese
amendmentsallofthethingsweknowandlearnaboutwouldn'thavebeenmadepossible.With
the13thand14thamendmentisstatingabolishmentofslaveryorournaturalbornrightswe
couldneverhavethesamelawsorsamefreedomwehavetodayasacitizenoftheUnitedStates.
Withoutthe15thamendmentwhichistohavetherighttovote(asanAfricanAmerican)the
peoplewouldnevergetasayingovernment,andbigcompanieswouldrunthewholelegislature.
Alloftheseamendmentswerepassedduetoslaveownersmistreatingtheirslaves,andplayeda
roleintheexpansionofdemocracybecausetheamendmentswerestateddirectlytowardsthe
newlycitizensoftheUnitedStates.
Finally,thelastthingthatcontributedintheexpansionofdemocracyintheUnitedStates
between17761920isachangeinlaborunions.InthepoliticalcartoonTheBossesoftheSenate
drawnbyJosephKepplerthepeopleinsenatearelookingupatbiggercompaniesthatoriginally
gotthemintoofficewhattodo.Thisisshowingthatthesenatewasjusttheretotakeordersfrom
theirbossestosaysothebiggercompanieswouldn'tgethurtintheprocess.Alsowiththe
biggercompaniesrunninggovernment,theactualpoliticiansnevergottheretruesayinwhat

lawsshouldbepassed,becausetheywouldlosetheirsponsor.Essentiallywithoutthebig
companiespayingoffpoliticiansAmericawouldntbethesameitistoday.Lastlywiththe
changeinLaborUnionsitgavethepeopleasayandmorerightswithinthegovernmentandputa
stoptothebigcompanieshavingallofthepower.
Theexpansionofdemocracyplayedabigpartinthewaygovernmentisshapedtoday,
withoutsuffrage,differentamendments,andnewlyformedlaborunionstheUnitedStateswould
beinanarchy.Withtherealizationofhowdrasticallygovernmenthaschanged,itistruly
remarkablehowthegovernmentevenranwithlargecompanieslookingoverthemandnot
enoughpeopletovoteorhaveasayintheirlife.
