Skill Level: Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced (choose one) Beginning
Grade Level: my own professional learning
Subject: Digital Citizenship
Core Curriculum Standard(s), Objective(s) and Indicator(s): not applicable
Technology Standards not applicable
Project Title: Common Sense Media Digital Citizenship Certification
Project Summary (Include a summary of the work to be done. This can be in outline
format to make it easy to follow while you create your project.):
1. Complete our online curriculum tutorial or attend an in-person training.
(I will screenshot the completion of the the tutorial)
2. Teach digital citizenship using Common Sense resources. Teach four
hours of digital-citizenship instruction to one class at a minimum, or, if
youre working with two or more classes, teach at least 2 hours of
digital citizenship instruction. (attach a brief outline of 4 lessons that I will
teach to my classes)
3. Communicate with parents/caregivers that you are committed to
educating students on how to be good digital citizens by engaging at least
three of the activities below: - Assign students homework that includes
family participation. - Put a link to Common Sense on your teacher
website. - Distribute at least one Common Sense Family Tip Sheet or the
Family Media Agreement to all parents/caregivers. - Facilitate
parent/caregiver discussion groups. (Attach a copy of my disclosure
documents in which I will include a section about teaching and
implementing digital citizenship)
4. Join one of Common Senses Professional Learning Networks (on
Edmodo or edWeb) to discuss best practices and interesting research as
well as to troubleshoot challenges. When you first sign up, share what
inspired you to implement digital citizenship and literacy and become
certified. (Screenshot of a group I have joined)

5. Introduce Common Sense Education and what youre doing in the

classroom to your principal, and encourage him or her to roll out a schoolwide digital citizenship program. Also, let your colleagues know about
your efforts. (Screenshot the email I will send the boss about potentially
doing a PD with my department or maybe the entire faculty at our school).

Preparation (What knowledge do you need to complete the project? How will you
acquire this knowledge?): I will need to have basic knowledge of how to
navigate common sense medias website to obtain my certificate.
What is the BIG idea I want my students to walk away with?
(This is describing the instructional value of your project. What will your students
learn? What skills will they acquired through this project?)
For this particular project, I want to become common sense media
certified so that I am later able to conduct a professional development for
the teachers at my school. Doing this PD will hopefully encourage teachers
to spend time teaching their students a unit on digital citizenship that
could be integrated into their content area.
Statement of Need (Why does this project need to be done?):
(Describe what void this project will fill for your students, your curriculum, your
lesson, yourself. You should not just recreate content that is easily found on the
web.)
This project needs to be done because my school is very technology
friendly but our students are not completely aware of how what it means
to be a digital citizen. The students do not quite understand how they can
actually get into trouble if they dont practice good digital citizenship.
They need to be immersed and engaged in this topic in order to obtain the
most benefit from the technology available.
