Performing Basic Operations

This chapter describes basic operations for WinPlus.
Topics are as follows:

3.1

Defining Basic WinPlus Terms

Using the Tool Bar

Using the Menu Bar

Defining Basic WinPlus Terms

The WinPlus interface is composed of a directory that includes Data Sets, Surveys, and
Folders designed to look and act similar to Windows Explorer to provide quick and easy
database organization. The main components of WinPlus contain Comment Lists, Data
Sets, and Surveys.

Name

Description

Comment Lists

The location where you can create and store custom comments
or note files that can be attached to surveys prior to
downloading to the Model 26DL PLUS or the 36DL PLUS.

Data Set Folders

The main part of the database where you can create Data Sets
and folders.

Data Sets

Custom defined points (ID numbers) in WinPlus that represent

various locations on test material such as a tank, pipe, or
pressure vessel. These Thickness Measurement Locations
(TMLs) identify where actual ultrasonic thickness readings are
taken. There are 8 standard Data Set formats:

Incremental

Sequential

Sequential with Custom Point

2D Grid

2D Grid with Custom Point

3D Grid

Boiler

Manual

After measurements are uploaded to WinPlus from a gage, the

Data Sets become a holding place for multiple files called
Survey files that can be analyzed separately or comparatively.
Table 4

m~=@=VNMJNUS`

WinPlus Interface Program Definitions

ON

tm=f~=m~

Survey

A Survey is a set of thickness readings taken on a gage. Once a

survey is uploaded to the 26DL PLUS or the 36DL PLUS they
are stored in a Data Set. The Surveys have the exact ID number
locations and follow the same order as the Data Sets, however
viewing a Survey file will only show the thickness data for a
particular inspection survey.
Multiple Surveys (sets of thickness readings) may also belong
to a Data Set. This makes it possible to view different thickness
readings and dates of all the Survey thickness readings at each
specific ID number location.

Folders

Table 4

3.2

Folders in WinPlus are similar to folders in a Windows

application, and help to organize Data Sets. Each Folder should
be named differently. You can cut, copy and paste Data Sets
from one folder to another to organize your database as it grows
or changes.
WinPlus Interface Program Definitions (Continued)

Using the Tool Bar

The WinPlus interface contains a tool bar across the upper portion of the screen that is
similar to other Windows applications. The tool bar consists of icons that offer fast and
easy access to many of the same tasks as the menu bar drop down functions.

the name directly or edit it later by right clicking on the folder name,
selecting Rename, and entering a new name.
Click off the folder or press the Enter button to exit the folder edit mode.

3.3.2

Creating a Comment List

The Comment List is a list of comments that correspond to a code letter from A through Z.
Each comment can be up to 16 alphanumeric characters long and a maximum of 26
comments can exist in a comment list.
Comments are used to add additional information to an ID number location or thickness
measurement location. Up to four comments can be stored at each location in the 36DL
PLUS datalogger. (Refer to the 36DL PLUS manual for more information about using
Comment Codes.)
To create a comment list, follow these steps:

Creating an Incremental Data Set

Create an Incremental Data Set when only the Starting ID number location is necessary. If
the Data Set is created in WinPlus and then downloaded to the gage, the Starting ID will
increment from that starting location entered in the program. The 36DL PLUS
automatically increments alphanumerically.
Note:

Incremental files should not be downloaded to the 26DL PLUS; instead

enter files from the 26DL PLUS keyboard. Refer to the 26DL PLUS
instruction manual for further details.

After entering a starting ID number (up to 16 alphanumeric characters), the gage will
automatically increment to the subsequent ID numbers using the standard incrementing
rules. Please refer to Section 6 of the 36DL PLUS manual for information on standard
incrementing rules.
To create an Incremental Data Set, follow these steps:
1. Select File New Data Set. The Generate New Data Set dialog box opens.
Note:

Creating a 3D Grid Data Set

A 3-D matrix grid is a sequence of multi-part ID numbers arranged to describe a path
through a three-dimensional matrix. Each part of the ID number corresponds to a
particular matrix dimension, such as columns, rows, and points.
A three-dimensional grid structure may associate two dimensions of the grid (e.g., the
columns and rows) with the X, Y coordinates, while the third dimension is normally
associated with multiple readings (points) per X, Y coordinates.
To create a 3D Grid Data Set, follow these steps:
1. Select File New Data Set. The Generate New Data Set dialog box opens.
Note:

If a folder is not selected, then the Data Set will be added to the main Data Set

Creating a Boiler Data Set

A Boiler Data Set is a special template designed specifically for boiler applications. These
applications are unique due to commonly used naming conventions for the ID numbers
thickness measurement locations.
A common method for identifying a thickness measuring location is by a threedimensional approach. The first dimension is Elevation, referring to the physical
distance from the bottom to the top of the boiler. The second dimension is Tube
Number, referring to the number of boiler tubes to be inspected. The third dimension is
the Custom Point (left, center, and right), referring to the actual thickness reading
location at the specified elevation on a specified tube. When these three dimensions are
combined, a single ID number is formed to identify the exact location of each thickness
reading.
To create a Boiler Data Set, follow these steps:
1. Select File New Data Set. The Generate New Data Set dialog box opens.
Note:

If a folder is not selected, then the Data Set will be added to the main Data Set
directory.

Editing Files
WinPlus is a Database program; therefore all changes made to a file are immediate and
permanent. Due to this structure, Panametrics-NDT added safeguards to the program that
prevent data from being accidentally changed or deleted. These protective features allow
the user to edit data files and make desirable changes only when the Allow Edit Readings
and Allow Delete Items are activated, however, by default both functions are turned off.

5.3.1

Activate the Editing Function

To allow editing, follow these steps:
1. Close all files.
2. Select Options Allow Edit Readings.
A check mark appears next to the option indicating that the editing function is active.
However, once the program is closed the application defaults back to disabling the
edit mode.

Importing and Exporting Data to Gages

This chapter describes how to import and export data using the WinPlus Interface
Program and the 26DL PLUS and the 36DL PLUS ultrasonic thickness gages.
You can import Survey Files from the 26DL PLUS and the 36DL PLUS to WinPlus by
connecting an RS-232 interface cable from the computers serial port to either gage. This
connection not only allows you to collect files, but also to export previously collected
file(s) that were created in WinPlus to either the 36DL PLUS or 26DL PLUS.
Note:

Data transfer is slightly different between the two gages. Please refer to
Section 7.1 about importing and exporting methods for the 36DL PLUS, and
section 7.2 for the 26DL PLUS.

Topics are as follows:

6.1

Importing and Exporting Using the 36DL PLUS
