ShiftingandplayinginhigherpositionsonthefingerboardisanimportanttechniqueforstudyingVolume4pieces.
Violinistsmustlearntoreachhighnotesaccuratelyandplaymelodiclinesmusicallyinotherpositions.Although
thereissomeshiftinginVolume3,fromVolume4onwardseverypieceuseshigherpositions.
Playingmusicseamlesslyacrossdifferentpositionsrequirestwobasicskills:
1. Shiftingaccuratelyandquicklybetweenpositions;
2. Formingaclearmentalmapofthenotesalloverthefingerboard.
Howtopractiseaccurateshifting
Asimplesamefingershiftfromalowerpositiontoahigheroneinvolvesthreeactions:
Lift releasepressureonthefingeryouareshiftingon andthethumb;
Shift slidelightlyupthestringtothetargetnote(listeningcarefullytohearwhenyou'vereachedyour
destination) thumbslidesupsimultaneously;
Drop onthenotewhenyouhavearrived.

playthetwonotes,BandDaccuratelyin1stposition.Shiftsmoothlywithouthurrying.
