Hybrid Ship &

the Future of Fish

Nobu Su Initiative
Posidonia 2016, Athens, Greece

Key Messages

Using little ballast means:

Hybrid Ship sailing in ballast

conditions does not require
ballast water, except for purified
clean ballast from middle of
ocean (subject to weather).

Next generation ship design.

no need for ballast water

treatment;
S no contaminated ballast water
from a foreign ecosystem.

S Gulf of Kutch;
S Arabian Gulf;
S Tokyo Bay.

Two separate propulsion

systems in hybrid ship
Main Engine with
Main Propeller

Electric Motor with

Retractable Propeller

Diesel engine;

Electric motor;

Main propeller with rudder;

Retractable 360-degree rotating

propeller under the ships bottom;

Full load of ballast water is

required when sailing without
cargo.

Minimum ballast water is required

when sailing without cargo;

Clean fresh water can be used as

minimum ballast.

What is the difference?

Hybrid min-Ballast Ship

Conventional Ship

Low-output efficient electricdriven propeller;

Using the main engine in full

ballast condition;

The easiest and most logical way

to protect ocean species;

Ballast Water Exchange damages

the environment, with specific
harm done to fish and plankton;

Reduced fuel consumption and

environmental pollution when
sailing without cargo.

Ships heavily pollute the

environment, even when they
carry no cargo.

property of NobuSu.org

What are the merits?

S Low draft means minimum water resistance with lower fuel oil

consumption;

S Main propeller is not in operation when ballasting, so this time

can be used for maintenance works;

S Main propeller output is fit for optimum most economical design,

i.e. setting mode for 85pct load basis;

S Less barnacles build-up on side shells, as they will dry up during

minimum ballast voyages.
