TOLLESON UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT

COURSE:
Algebra 1; Unit 3; Interpreting
Functions
Topic 1: Concept of a Function and Domain
Standards

F-IF.A.1 Understand that a function from one set (called the domain) to another set (called the range)
assigns to each element of the domain exactly one element of the range. If f is a function and x is an
element of its domain, then f(x) denotes the output of f corresponding to the input x. The graph of f is
the graph of the equation y = f(x).
F-IF.B.5 Relate the domain of a function to its graph and, where applicable, to the quantitative
relationship it describes. For example, if the function h(n) gives the number of person-hours it takes to
assemble n engines in a factory, then the positive integers would be an appropriate domain for the
function.
INSTRUCTIONAL SEQUENCE
3.1.1 (Suggested 2 days)
OBJECTIVE

Students will be able to recognize functions in multiple representations (table,

equation, verbal description, ordered pairs), identify the domain and range, and
explain why a relation is or is not a function.

SPIRALED REVIEW
DAILY WORD
PROBLEM

See Attached
Your phone service costs $30 per month. You want to graph the total amount
you have spent on your phone over the course of one year. Create an ordered
pair for each of the 12 months in the year and graph the amount you have
spent.

CALCULATOR
CONNECTION
CLOSURE QUESTION

Students will use their calculators to input tables into calculator.

What is an example of something you see in your daily life that can be
described in terms of functions? Why do you think it is a function?
Potential Answers: snack machines, miles per gallon, weekly salaries, amount
on gift card/cost of good

OBJECTIVE

Students will be able to determine the domain of the given graph of all function
types and explain why it is or is not a function.

DAILY WORD
PROBLEM

Suppose P and Q give the sizes of two different animal populations, where Q>P.
In (a)(d), say which of the given pair of expressions is larger. Briey explain
your reasoning in terms of the two populations.
a. P+Q and 2P
b. P+50t and Q+50t
c. P/(P+Q) and 0.5
d. P/Q and Q/P

CALCULATOR
CONNECTION
CLOSURE QUESTION

Students will graph functions on their calculator to determine domain. Students

must be taught how to input a function into their calculator.
(Put any non-linear function on the board) Is this a function? How do you know?
How can I rotate or turn this function so that it remains a function? How can you
rotate the function so that it is no longer a function?

LESSON PLAN
RESOURCES

Potential Answer:
*Rotate 180 Degrees *Rotate 90 degrees
