South Carolina State went into Tidewater Virginia this weekend and came out with a split, losing
to Norfolk State 87-74 on Saturday before handing
Hampton its first conference loss Monday, 67-62.
Six-three junior guard Eric Eaves (16.4 ppg.)
continued his sterling play for SC State with 21
points in the loss to Norfolk State and 18 in the win
over Hampton. But several others also came thru vs.
Hampton.
Six-seven sophomore forward Tashombe Riley had 10 points and 10 rebounds 6-8 senior center Darryl Palmer had 10 points and 8 rebounds
helping the 'Dawgs to a decisive 47-42 edge on the
boards. Sophomore guard Ty Solomon hit a big
three and two key free throws in the final minute to
seal the win.
The results leave Tidewater rivals Hampton (71) and Norfolk (6-1) virtually tied atop the conference with just one loss and Murray Garvin's SCSU
Bulldogs right in the thick of the race at 6-2. Howard (3-1) also has just one loss in league play.
The big showdown is this Saturday when the
leaders (NSU and Hampton) meet at Hampton's

The race in the CIAA Northern Division tightened up as Virginia State handed Chowan its
first conference loss (75-70) Wednesday. Elijah
Moore's 25 points and 11 rebounds led the Trojans.
VSU, Chowan, Virginia Union and Lincoln
now have one loss in the division as the race heads
to its final month. The leaders tangle this week as
Va. Union is at Chowan Saturday while Virginia
State is at Lincoln.
J. C. Smith moved out to 3-0 in the Southern
Division with an 89-81 win over Livingstone Monday. JCSU is at Shaw (1-1, 5-2) Saturday.
SWAC
Texas Southern got big wins over ArkansasPine Bluff (78-49) and Mississippi Valley State
(75-60) to remain unbeaten (7-0) and on top of the
SWAC race.
Mike Davis is getting great play from redshirt
freshman (and football star) Derrick Griffin who
had double-doubles in each game tallying 16 points
BCSP Notes
"Hargrave was consistently a headache for East offensive linemen during the practice week with first-step quickness that created backfield disruption.
Hargrave is a primarily 3-tech defensive tackle prospect for a 4-3 defense. Following practices, Hargrave was a popular introduction for NFL scouts on hand..
. He is shaping up to be an attractive draft sleeper at next month's NFL Scouting
Combine."
and 17 boards vs. MVSU and 13 points and 13 rebounds vs. UAPB.
But Davis is also getting great contributions
from his veterans. Seniors Malcolm Riley (6-5)
and David Blanks (6-3) scored in double figures in
both games. Riley had 18 and 16 while Blanks had
17 and 15.
The Tigers will try to keep the ball rolling with
trips into Alabama this week at Alabama State Saturday and at Alabama A&M Monday.
SIAC
opinion hasn't changed. His performance during drills matched his impressive
tape, launching himself out of his stance with terrific initial quickness to break
up the rhythm of blockers. Hargrave moves very well for a 315-pounder due to
his flexible lower body to easily change directions in space and play low to the
ground to get underneath blocks. He has a thick lower body with wide hips and
meaty thighs, showing the ability to anchor at the point of attack and occupy
multiple blockers. Although he was already my top player entering the week,
Hargrave was still able to help himself with his positive play against prospects
from the FBS level.
The game itself, won by the West 29-9 behind three touchdowns from
5-11 Oregon quarterback Vernon Adams, carries some value, but the majority of scouts and executives had already left town, having seen what
they needed to see.
Hargrave is also invited to the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine, which
will be held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. from Feb. 2329.
"He's undersized (6-foot-2, 295 pounds), but a quick and explosive
player. He's flashed both days in the pass-rush drills and in the one-on-ones. And
even in the team drills, you can see how quick his get-off is.."

Javon Hargrave (#97,
South Carolina State)
pursues quarterback Justin
Doughty (#12) during the
East West Shrine Game at
Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida Saturday.
"We have seen small schoolers come in to second tier all star events
and dominate. Hargrave will be the next name to make an impact in the NFL,
as he disrupts as a pass rusher but also against the run. It showed in his games
this season, hence why he was mentioned in my preview, and his high level play
continued throughout the week of practice. Some teams seem more wary of nonFBS prospects in the early and middle rounds. Hargrave's talent is worthy of a
top 100 pick."

South Carolina State tight end Temarrick Hemingway and Hampton offensive guard Torian White were on the National team and Florida
A&M linebacker Akil Blount and Norfolk State linebacker Deon King
were on the American squad in Saturday's NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, California.
Hemingway, who was first team all-MEAC, caught one pass for eight
yards in his team's 18-17 win over the American team. White, a UCLA
transfer, was also first team all-MEAC performer.
King, a first team all-MEAC selection and Buck Buchannan Award
winner, was credited with two solo tackles while Blount had one solo and
one assisted tackle.
