wellas'communicationisatstake'.Ifyoumeanwhatismore
important,communicatingyourideasorusingperfectgrammarthen
thereisnoquestionthatcommunicationshouldcomefirstinmost
cases.Imeanifyouwerehavingaheartattackwhatwouldbemore
important,toknowenoughvocabularytotellsomeoneandgethelpor
toensurethatyourarticleusageandtenseswerecorrect? Butof

coursethatdoesn'tnotmeanyoucanignoregrammarcompletely.
Thereareothersituationswhereincorrectgrammarcouldleadto
confusionandmiscommunication,andotherswherethelevelof
accuracyandformalitywouldbeexpectedtobehigh.Somyadvice
wouldbeinmosteverydaysituationstofirstconcentrateon
communicationandfluency,andtoworryaboutgrammaticalaccuracy
later,buttotrytobeawareofthegrammarsoyoucanimproveand
applyitcorrectlywhenthatismoreimportant.

grammarandvocabulary,ourgoalisforpeopletocommunicatefreely
andtobuildtheirconfidenceandfluency.Wearenotlookingfor
mistakesandwearecertainlynotcorrectingthemwewantpeopleto
relaxandtojoininconversationswhatevertheirlevelandnottoworry
aboutmakingmistakes.Ifsomeoneaskswewillhelp,orifacomment
isreallynotclearwewillmentionitandsaycouldyoutryagain,but
otherwise,asRoysays,communicationisthekey.Otherlearners(and
educators)aremoreinterestedinWHATyouhavetosaythanin
whetheryousayitperfectlyornot.

Ofcoursetheremaybeafewpeoplewhobehavepoorlywithpeople
whoarelearningtospeakEnglish,butinmyexperiencenative
speakersareusuallypatientandtrytobehelpfulinsituationswhere
someoneishavingtroubleexpressingthemselves.Afterall,people
fromcountriesliketheUKandUSoftenspeakfewerforeignlanguages
thanpeoplefromothercountriessoitwouldnotbeverysmart(or
polite)ifsomeonewhoonlyknewhowtospeakEnglishlookeddown
onsomeonewhoperhapsspokethreeorfourdifferentlanguages,of
whichEnglishwasonlyone!
