TheHklea
TheHkleaispartofthePolynesianVoyagingSociety(PVS).Thisgroupwasfoundedin
1973.ThesocietysgoalwastofigureouthowtheearlyPolynesiansfoundtheHawaiianIslands.
TwoyearsafterPVSwasformed,adoublehulledcanoe,justliketheonesthattheancient
Polynesiansused,wasbuilt.Itwasnamed

orStarofGladness.Thisnamecomesfroma
starcalled
Arcturus
whichinHawaiianis

.Thisstarisimportantbecausewithit,navigators
areabletostayoncoursefromHawaiitoTahiti.WiththehelpofMauPiailug,amasternavigator
fromSatawal,thecrewsetofffromHawaiitoTahitiwithnomoderntechnology.Thecrewdiscovered
howtheancientPolynesiansusedthestars,wind,wavesandtherisingandsettingoftheSunto
navigatetheirway.

WhentheearlyPolynesianstraveledintheircanoes,theydidnthaveGPSorradioslikewedo
today.Theyhadtorelyonwhatwasaroundthemthewaves,wind,thepositionofthesunduringthe
dayandthestarsatnight.NainoaThompson,animportantmemberofPVScreatedtheHawaiian
Starcompasstohelppeopletounderstandthepatternsofthestarsandwheretheyareinthesky.

navigatorsguidethecanoeinthecorrectdirections.
TheWorldwideVoyage(WWV)
Since2013,Hkleahasbeenonavoyage(orjourney)aroundtheworld.Thisvoyageis
differentfromthefirstvoyagefromHawaiitoTahiti.Thistime,theHkleaisnttravelingalone,itis
joinedbyanothercanoecalled

.Thiscanoeiscalledasistercanoebecauseittravels
alongwithHklea.Itsnamecomesfromthestar

.ThiscanoehasmodernecologicaltechnologyandhelpsthecrewonHkleatostayon
courseastheytravelaroundtheworld.Throughoutthevoyage,Hkleahasmademanystopsat
differentports.Portsarewhereshipsgotodock.SomeoftheportsthatHkleahasvisitedare
locatedinSouthAfrica,Tonga,PanamaandeventheUnitedStates.
