Lesson Title: The Seven Forms of Energy (Day 2)
Essential Question: What are the seven forms of energy?
Science Standards: 5.4 Describe forms of energy, including chemical, heat, light, and
mechanical.
ELA Standard:
5.12

Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals,

events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on

specific information in the text. [RI.5.3]
Content Objectives:

TSW complete a Kahoot pre-assessment quiz about energy.

TSW review the seven forms of energy discussed on day one by viewing a power
point presentation.

TSW work together to match each form of energy term to its correct definition.

Pre-assessment:
TTW conduct a Kahoot quiz with the students.
ASSESSMENT:

TTW assess the student's journals.

TTW have the students fill out an exit ticket in which they will tell her something they
learned and a question they have.

ENGAGE:
Essential Question: What are the seven forms of energy?
1. TTW engage the students by saying, Yesterday we learned about different forms of
energy by sorting cards into groups. Today we will continue learning about energy.
Turn and talk with a partner and see if you can name all seven.
2. TTW ask one pair to share what they discussed.
Prior Knowledge:
3. TTW ask the students to get out their Macbooks and log on to Blackboard.
4. TSW be instructed to go to their science course and find the Kahoot quiz labeled
Forms of Energy Kahoot.

5. TSW complete the Kahoot quiz.

Orient and Motivate:
6. TTW say, Overall the scores look good. Now I have a power point for you, which will
review what we learned yesterday before we move on to our activity for today. If you
missed some of the questions on the quiz, see if you can figure out where you went
wrong as I go through the power point.
EXPLORATION:
7. TTW project the power point presentation on forms of energy.
8. TTW start by telling the students the definition of energy. (slide 1)
9. TTW discuss kinetic and potential energy (slides 2-3) and remind the students of
the card sort they completed on day one in which they sorted all of the energy
cards into potential and kinetic energy.
10. TTW use the power point (slides 4-11) to review the seven forms of energy. She
will explain a short definition of each, give examples, and help students make
connections to their daily lives. During this time the teacher will also use equity
sticks to call on students to give examples of each form of energy and explain
their thinking.
11. Once the teacher has completed the power point presentation, she will explain
the term/definition matching activity and pass out the materials. TSW be given a
sheet with seven forms of energy terms, seven corresponding definitions, and
seven pictures depicting the forms of energy (mixed up). TSW cut out each
square and glue them in the correct sequence on the recording sheet. TSW be
allowed to talk at their tables to discuss the activity.
12. TTW end the activity and ask the students to glue the recording sheet in their
science journals.
EXPLANATION:
13. TTW bring the students back together and reveal the answers to the forms of
energy match.
14. TTW pass out the exit tickets for assessment.
EXPANSION:

TSW be given blank squares in which they will write their own terms and definitions,

and draw their own example pictures. TSW mix the terms up and swap with a
partner to complete a peer's matching sheet.
EVALUATION:

I will know learning is taking place during the engage part of the lesson by viewing
the kahoot quiz.

I will know learning is taking place during the exploration part of the lesson by asking
students higher order thinking questions such as, Why do you think that is a form of
light energy? and asking students to give thumbs up if they agree. I will also observe
the students as they complete the matching sheet to check for understanding and
supplement learning.

I will know learning is taking place during the explanation part of the lesson when I
ask table groups to share their answers. I will also use the exit slip to assess their
learning.
designed to assess objectives at the conclusion of the cycle.

ADAPTATIONS:

SPED: Information from day one of the lesson will be reviewed before the activity.
Students will be strategically grouped for the activity.

ELL/ESL: Visual aids will be included on the power point as well as on the matching
activity sheet. Students will be grouped strategically.

Gifted: Students will be given the option to create a power point presentation on
how the different forms of energy effect our lives. This can be shared with the class if
they wish.

REFLECTION: Reflect on your effectiveness and your childrens response to the lesson.
