1.0 INTRODUCTION
Lets Love Science Day is one of the program that will be organized by Science Is Fun (SIF)
society, Faculty of Education, UiTM Puncak Alam. This society has been reformed since 2012
and actively conducting many Science programs in school especially for primary school. Before
this, in Shah Alam, we have many programs for primary and some for secondary school but this
is the first time we will organize a program here in Puncak Alam. We have a strong collaboration
with one of the faculty in UiTM which is Faculty Of Applied Science (AS). All of the members
of this society were come from science background students which is AS and also Science
Education students such as Chemistry, Biology and Physics. This society were proposed to create
and to show the uniqueness of Science to all people especially to our new generation so that they
have interest in Science and can excellence in it in the future. For this time, this program got
fully support from all members in order to show the uniqueness of science in life to PT3 students
due to the lack of interest among them.
This program actually focused on PT3 students who will be sit for PT3 examination next
year. This program was proposed by president of Science Is Fun Society (SIF), Nur Fatma Hanis
binti Abdullah Sani as well as the program director with the help of society members and also the
volunteers from Faculty of Education and Faculty Of Applied Science.
Actually the idea of this program is come out based on the result of PT3 students on
2015. We come out with this idea when we read a newspaper article released by Malay Online
Newspaper. So, from the stated issue, we come out with this program named by Lets Love
Science Day that involved PT3 students. From the stated issue, we have conducted an interview
among form 3 students at our target school to know the reason for this thing happen. Besides, we

also did some research based on the article from internet to support our finding. After conducting
the interview and also the research, we come out with this amazing program name as Lets Love
Science Day.
We have chosen SMK Puncak Alam as our target school to organize this amazing
program since this school has the most students in this town. We have asked the school
permission and they have agreed to participate in our program. The number of students involve is
about 140 students and the duration for this program only one day which is on 21 January 2017.
The program will be started at 8.00 am until 5.00 pm. This program has 3 sessions which are
session 1 more to motivation session to students about science subject, session 2 more to increase
interest in science subject among PT3 students and session 3 is a module slot. Each session have
different objective that we have targeted and want to achieve at the end of this program.
For this program, we also invited volunteers from FSG and also education students
which is about 25 volunteers. At the same time, we also asked our advisor who is also master in
science education, Mr. Mohamad Hisyam Bin Ismail and Madam Fazni Susila to help us
conducting this program so that this program can be carried out smoothly and achieve all
targeted objectives.

2.0 RATIONALE
Lets Love Science Day is a program targeted on PT3 students in SMK Puncak Alam.
The aim of this program is to give motivation and also to increase students interest in science
subject so that they can be excellent in Science subject thus increase the ranking of that subject
in PT3. Since PT3 questions involve High Order Thinking Skill (HOTS), so the question will be
asked will be a little bit harder and need creativity to solve it. Lacking of interest and motivation
have made the students fail to shine in science because they did not have spirit to solve the hard
question. So, students who sit for PT3 must possess high motivation and interest in Science
subject in order to be excellent in science. So, we hoped that at the end of this program, all of
them have high motivation and interest as well as change their mindset about science which
science is difficult.
PT3 is replacing the PMR examination which has different format and grading. It totally
different with PMR because most of the question asked is HOTS and the pattern of carried out
the PT3 also different. In PT3, the students will be grade according to their band based on their
achievement. The higher the band the higher the achievement of the students. The band will be
determine which stream they preferred in form 4.
As we know that the result of PT3 on 2015 is very bad since it was the first year of PT3
was carried out. According to the Ministry of education, about 83 students able to get straight As
in PT3 out of 450000.Based on the result, there was decreasing in number of students who
scored in science subject which is less than 13 per cent of those who sat for the PT3 examination
last year scored at least a C in both science and mathematics.

In order to find the factor that contribute to this issue, we have done an interview among
Form 3 students to know their feedback about Science subject. As a result, we found out that
Form 3 student lack of interest in Science. Most of them, said that Science is hard because it is
the memorizing subject. Other finding from the interview in order to show that students were
lacking of interests in Science is they rarely spend time doing their homework especially for
Science subject. This is supported by many articles that we found in website as our references.
Most of the article that we found, said that interest among students play an important factor for
students to excellent in Science. One of the article that we found which is from The Star, they
reported that students nowadays said that nothing is interesting In Science that they can find out.
From that scenario, we want to organize this program to increase the motivation and interest
among PT3 students in order to produce a good PT3 result in future.
In this program, we will prove the students that science is not hard but actually science is
fun because everything in our life relates strongly with science so that it will increase the
students interest. Besides we will make them know that Science is not a memorizing subject but
is understanding subject. Because, once we have understand that, we tend to remember that
topic. So, the understanding in Science is very important to help them remember and in order to
understand, we must possess the interest in Science first. When they have higher interest in
science automatically they have high motivation in science. Thus, they are able to face any
HOTS questions that will be asked in examination.

3.0 THE CURRICULUM

3.1 Need Analysis
Recently we have been shock with the result of PT3 students, PT3 was introduced to
replace the previous examination format, PMR in order to have better educational system and
result. However, the results presented by students did not showed any improvement but have
such a big decreasing in achievement especially in science subject. Most of the students barely
pass the subject and only scored C as the best result. This issue should be overcome before it
getting worse and gave impact to our future nation education.
Based on some research and observations, one of the reasons why students got bad results
in science subject was due to their own self thought or understanding. They tempt to think that
science was a boring and difficult subject, there were too much theory to be understand with a lot
of formula to be memorized. Hence, they were not interested to pay attention in class and science
became the less favor subject rather than the other subject. In this program, we pay attention in
order to increase students interest in science subject by making it looks interesting subject. We
also going to stress about how important science subject in their PT3 and how it going to affect
their life later. We hope by conducting this program, their grades in science subject will get
better.
On the date 30th June 2016, our Program Director. Miss Shahira Binti Mat Yusof along
with Assistant Program Director , Miss Marlisa Shuhada Binti Mansor and our secretary Miss
Nur Fatma Hanis Binti Abdullah Sani have conducted an open interview session in one of
secondary school, SMK Puncak Alam which involved about 10 students. This interview session

were conducted to know the level of awareness of students about science subject and how
important science subject in their PT3 and life.

The questions that have been asked:

1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Do you have general idea about PT3?

Do you think science subject is interesting?
Do you think science subject is just theoretically?
How often you study science subject?
How about your achievement in science subject?
Do you think science is useful in daily life?

We have conducted this interview session verbally and have recorded all the
conservations as a proof to keep for our record and also to support our report later. The details
about the respondents were kept as anonymous in order to secure their privacy. The interview
session were actually involved of 10 students, 5 students for both genders. The sessions was
conducted almost 40 minutes from 10.00 am to 10.40 am at school canteen on 30 th June 2016,
Thursday during their recess time.
Based on the interview results, it was quite disappointed that most of the student still did
not have idea about PT3, what was the real reasons PMR being replaced with the new
examination format, PT3. Most of the students which was about 70% said that they only follow
the flow without realizing what does it actually meant for. Another 30% students said they got
some idea about PT3 as they were came from quite educated families, so they were being
exposed with the current issues.

For the second question, almost majority responded that they were not interesting with
science subject. They said that they cannot even found which parts of science was interesting to
be learnt or knew, there was no need to know about science neither in general nor in details.
They only took and learnt science subject as it was one of the compulsory subject in PT3, they
will drop the subject if it was possible. As the result, they were not pay attention in science class
and got bad grades in their examination.
Was science only theoretically used? The responds from this question was most of the
students agreed that science subject was all about the theory, they need to understand a lot of
concepts and memorized all of them. Those concepts were quite confusing and used to lead them
to misconception. Students said that lab session was not helpful at all as most of the experiments
were conducted by teachers, they only observed rather than trying by themselves.
They need to experience them to enhance their understanding in science knowledge.
For the fourth question, about 60% of respondents responded that they only study or read
the science book night before the examination day. They did not really understand and
memorized what they read as they only pass through every single page without pay much
attention to know about it in details. Another 40% respondents said that they rarely read the
science book even during examination season. They only read the book when they felt want to
but most of the times they did not felt to read at all.
Next, students were asked about their achievement in science subject, most of them said
that science was he one that made their examination looked awful. They got the worst grade for
their science paper rather than the other subjects. Neither of them got A nor pass in flying color
in science subject, they said that it was such a miracle if they able to pass the subject as most of
9

the students failed the paper. Some of the students said that their best achievement for science
subject was C, they never got better than that.
For the last question, we asked the students if they think that science was useful in their
daily life. Most of the students said that they have read in text book how science can be used in
their daily life but still unable to relate and apply them. In their opinions, science was nothing
more than a knowledge which they should learnt, understand and apply during sitting for science
paper during the examination. That was why they were not interested to know more about
science subject in their life.
Thus, this set of answers gave a really big impact to us and urges our deep heart to make
some program which able to create some changes in their way of thinking about science from the
typical one into more open minded in order to the create a better generation that will led the
country in the future.

3.2 Philosophy

10

CONCLUSION
Love towards science among students is one of the step for us to produce a knowledge
loving nation. This is why this unique program will be a great exposure towards the students as
an eye-opening to them how science is actually an interesting subject and it is relatable in our
daily life. With all of the fascinating activities provided throughout the day I believe we can
change students negative perception towards science and enhance the curiosity inside students
who already fond towards science. Additionally, as the facilitators are science students, we
believe it can also influence their interest to become more involved in activities that we have
arranged. The facilitators can channel down their knowledge towards the students and they also
can share their experience in how they become science students.
As in the first session we have planned to invite the district education officer as we want
to acknowledge students about the reality and the actual performance of students in science as
our Ministry of Education has introduced us a new way for teachers to evaluate the students
performance which is PT3. For the second session, we will invite the first Malaysian astronaut
Dr. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Al Masrie bin Sheikh Mustapha to give a talk about his experience
on ISS which hopefully will instill interest to the students on how science can does something
which we think impossible for human hundreds years ago. For the last session we plan to do an
explorace with stimulating activities in each check point to show the students how science relate
in their daily life.
We hope this program will become a huge success and it will give a significant impact
towards the students perspective concerning science subject because it is important for them to
love a subject first in order for them to excel in the subject. With all of the interesting activities

29

that we have planned hopefully we can intrigue the students and from that they love towards
science will blossom.

Dear Sir,
PERMISSION TO ORGANIZE LETS LOVE SCIENCE DAY
I am represented for my society as stated above, would like to ask your
permission an the principal for this school to allow us from Science Is Fun
(SIF) society from University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to organize a program
named as Lets Love Science Day.
2.
Lets Love Science Day is a program that aiming to increase the
motivation and also the interest in Science subject among Form 3 students.
This is due to the decreasing in number of students who score in Science
subject based on the PT3 result on 2015. Based on the interview that has
been done in your school, the reason for this thing happen is lacking of
interest in science. So, we come out with this program to help the students
and also increase the ranking of Science subject in PT3 result in future.

Dear Sir,
PERMISSION TO CARRY OUT AN INTERVIEW IN ORDER TO ORGANIZE A
PROGRAM
I am represented for my society as stated above, would like to ask your
permission an the principal for this school to allow us from Science Is Fun
(SIF) society from University Teknologi Mara (UiTM) to carry out an interview
with some of the Form 3 students in this school.
2.
Actually, we from SIF society want to organize a program to help the
students excellent in Science subject because based on the result of PT3 on
2015, less than 13% of students score at least a C in Science and
Mathematic subject. So, in order to organize a program regarding that issue,
we have to identify the reason for this thing to happen. Thus, we come out
with an idea to carry out an interview with about 20 respondents to know
about their feedback. After that, we can decide what type program that we
can organize in order to increase the result of Science subject in PT3.
3.
We choose this school because this school has the highest number of
students who will be sit for PT3 next year. So, we hoped that, we can help as
many as students in order to be excellent in Science.
4.
The interview session are expected to be done as below:
Date: 30 June 2016
Time: 10.00 a.m 10.40 a.m
Venue: Canteen of SMK Puncak Alam.
4.
We hoped that you are agreeing with our proposal for this interview
and we hoped that this interview session can be carried out as plan. We
hoped that you agree because the time that we requested is about the 10.00
a.m until 10.40 a.m. which is during recess time of the students.
We are looking forward for your response about our interview session.
Sincerely,
..
(SHAHIRA BINTI MAT YUSOF)
Program Director.
