Around Hicksville

Bob, Thanks to you and all the editors of HixNews for another great issue (6/1/16)! I especially enjoyed
the cartoons interspersed with the real news of fellow alumni this month. I also feel the video links gave
great coverage of what Memorial Day is all about! One correction; in the Vietnam Memorial Update
covered in the Newsletter Section of this issue, my email address is shown in error as
joecar4a@aol.com. As you know, it should be jcar4a@aol.com, just as it appears on all the Memorial
Updates in the Honoring Our Veterans section.

Vicky Penner Katz Whitaker, Class of 1958, was one of four distinguished
journalists recently inducted into the Press Club of Long Island's Hall of Fame in
ceremonies in New York. The event, that drew about 250 print and electronic journalists
from across Long Island and the New York metropolitan area, was held at the Woodbury
County Club and was part of PCLI's annual Media Awards Dinner.

The other three Hall of Fame recipients were Frank Eltman, a longtime Long Island
correspondent for the Associated Press; Les Payne, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist
who spent most of his career as an editor and columnist at Newsday and was also the
founder of the National Association of Black Journalists; and posthumously to Marie
Colvin, a Long Island native who served as a war correspondent for The Sunday Times
in London and died in the siege of Homs in Syria in 2012.

With more than 60 years experience in the media business, Whitaker was cited for her
long-time role in developing the programs and policies of the organization locally,
regionally and nationally. She is a past-president of the Press Club of Long Island and a
past vice-president of the Deadline Club in New York City. She served a record-setting 10
years as a regional director and national board member of the Society of Professional
Journalists, six representing the northeast and four representing the region covering
Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.
Prior to her retirement in 1999 and a subsequent move to Springfield, Illinois, she was
Director of University News Services for State University of New York at Stony Brook
for 14 years. Her journalism career includes working as a business reporter and editor for
more than a dozen years, 14 years as managing editor, North Shore News Group, and
freelancing throughout her career including producing syndicated features for Californiabased Copley News Service and its successor, Creators Syndicate.
Whitaker has also judged numerous state and national newspaper contests including the
prestigious Sigma Delta Chi awards.
In Springfield, she produces Historico, the award-winning monthly newsletter for the
600-member Sangamon County Historical Society of which she serves as vice-president.
A licensed amateur radio operator, she is also public information officer for the
Sangamon Valley Radio Club; a past vice-chair of the Springfield Area Arts Council; past
chair of the University of Illinois Sangamon Auditorium Advisory Board and has served
on the boards several other local organizations including the Association of Women
Journalists, the Family Service Center and Memorial Hospital Foundation's Annual
Festival of Trees.
Whitaker holds a bachelors degree in journalism from Hofstra College. She and her
husband Roger have five children and 10 grandchildren.

Dear EditorsThank you so much for all your work in putting together the
Newsletter. I look forward to reading it each month. Casale's Corner has some wonderful items, which I
would love to pass on to many people. When I try to print from Casale's Corner, I am never able to get
the entire column in the print preview, especially if it's more than one page. I'm hitting the "print" icon
at the top of the page, but all that prints is the first page. Is there another way to print these wonderful
columns? This time, specifically, it's the lovely column called "Meredith and Abbey." Thanks so much
for trying to help me with thisLinda Faraone Connelly 1960
Editor noteI sent a Word Perfect copy of the document to Linda and hoped it would go through
without any problems. We shall see!!!
Bob, it worked! Thanks so much, but can you tell me how I can do it myself? I don't want to bother you
every monthLinda

Lindaprobably every document on the newsletter can be copied and pasted to an existing file. You
simply create a new document. Left click the mouse and keep the click while scanning the document
from the starting to ending point. Release the click and right click and when a new frame opens, click on
copy. You now can place what youve copied to a new document.

Senator Secures Funding for Playgrounds

Earlier this year, the district learned that Sen. Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) secured $100,000
in state funding for Hicksville Schools to undertake a capital improvement project. The funds will be
used to replace, repair and renovate the playgrounds at the districts seven elementary schools, which are
used by students during the school day and by the community throughout the year. Central
administration is working with elementary school principals to assess each playground and determine
the upgrades to be made. The district is thankful for the additional funding from Sen. Martins and the
support he has shown in helping our schools provide students with the services and facilities they need
and deserve, said Dr. Carl Bonuso, Superintendent of Schools. Playground activity aligns with the
districts health and wellness
curriculum and supports its commitment to battling obesity by increasing cardiovascular conditioning.
Our playgrounds provide students with opportunities to exercise and socialize during recess. As a
district, we focus on fitness and health but also want students to be children and enjoy playtime.

Dear Classmates...The video I did several years back to honor all the veterans from Hicksville who
served in the military is hyper linked below (click on and go or copy and paste to your browser if the
link doesn't work). I posted it, too, on Facebook but not everyone is linked to Facebook. It's a reminder
of the tragedy of war that crosses all boundaries. Wishing everyone a peaceful and Happy Memorial

Dear Alumni CONGRATULATIONS Robert Casale
It gives me great pleasure to announce to all of you that Bob Casale has been selected as the 2016
Hicksville High School Hall of Fame Honoree by the 2016 HHS graduating class!! Please join me in
Congratulating Bob on receiving this significant honor, which he so well deserves.
I am told the final nomination package was impressive and personally feel the many endorsements Bob
received from our Alumni who monthly see his hard work and overall efforts in HixNews that keep us
all connected, surely helped his selection. My personal thanks go to each of you who endorsed Bob's
nomination for helping a true Team Effort that made it happen!! There were almost 200 former
classmates who endorsed Bob. There is a sampling of the endorsements shown below.
Bob had stiff competition, since only one honoree is selected each year and I'm sure those who did not
receive this year's award will be nominated again in the future.
Bob will be honored at the HHS 2016 Graduation Ceremony on Sunday, June 26th, beginning at 2 p.m.
Please see the attached letter I received in today's mail from Dr. Bonuso, Hicksville Superintendant of
Schools. SincerelyJoe Carfora HHS 1962

Hi Bob...Just wanted to congratulate you for your selection as the 2016 Hicksville

A note to Chris Andersen from the class of 1967... Thanks, Chris, for the clippings. I
dropped the ball on your last clippings about the big snow storm and Billy Joel. I have to work that into
the next issue. What I'm trying to do is incorporate some of the news from the school district into the
newsletter. Can't believe I was nominated for the Hicksville High School Hall of Fame and can't
believe I was chosen this year. Mind boggling...there are so many worthy of induction. So many nice
emails from my family of friends. Warm Regards... Buffalo Bob Casale
Bob, you deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. Should have happened earlier. Anton Mure should be in
along with Rich & Peggy Delia for all their hard work on the reunions. Waiting to hear how the '66
reunion was the other night. Looking forward to my 50th especially since it's at the Knights of
Columbus in Hicksville. Remember when you and I went to the '56 reunion? That was a great time. Talk
to you soon...Chris
I remember all the reunions I attended where I took a lot of pictures and put the images into videos that
are now posted on You Tube. I asked Steve Goldstein from 1966 several months ago to take a lot of
pictures and send them along to me. Suggested that someone checking people in take pictures of
everyone who is arriving after they are given their name tags. The worst trouble I've had with doing the
reunions is identifying people. With their names readily available, I can do a nice video. Never heard
back. There is another reunion for the class of 1971 in July and I made the same suggestions to their
committee. Never heard back. The class of 1956 had their sixty year but I have to check if there are
pictures available.

In The News
The first soldier to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery was Private William Henry Christman of
Pennsylvania on May 13, 1864.

Saw a post of Facebook that said, SRO Officer Carolyn Gudger is a hero for stopping a
Gunman at Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, Tennessee. The gunman entered
the school with two hand guns and was holding the principal at gunpoint when Carolyn
intervened. She drew her weapon and waited for back-up to arrive. The gunman was just
opposite a classroom full of students when the arriving officers opened fire killing the
gunman. This incident was not reported by the media because no children were killed, just
the gunman.

This makes sense. The soft pad protects your hands and the shaft would be pointed enough
to penetrate the glass if hit with force. Just remember to close your eyes. Please pass it on to

Hi Hix NewsI notice the name Michael Zeussman, Class of 1970, on the In
Memoriam list. I think I knew this guy pretty well back at HHS in about 1967-68 or so. Is there any way
that I can find out more, like was he truly the friend I am remembering, and what his story was, when

did he go, how did he go and what was his life like? Could you send this email to any survivors you
might know of with the hopes that they contact me. I was very fond of him. We spent some good time
together, if this is the same guy. Thank youStephanie (Schlegel) Manning 1968
After investigating several sites, was unable to find any information on Michael Zeussman. When he did
pass, an obituary probably never was offered. There's nothing on the SSDI and that site usually lists
everyone who ever had a social security number. SorryBuffalo Bob Casale

People Looking For People

HixNewsIn the current issue of the

newsletter there was a posting from Ed Faraone. I lost touch with him some time ago. Would love to get
in touch again. I know you don't give out contact info, but if you could give him mine, and let him know
I am looking to hook up again it would be greatly appreciated. thanksFred Fulco 1960
Dear Ed Faraone (HHS Class of 1963)Fred Fulco (HHS Class of 1960) would like to get in touch with
you. His request, as well as his email address (concealed) is shown below. BestHenry

In last months HixNews, Jeff White was looking for Norm Sperling. After searching several areas,
HixNews was not able to locate Norm. Jeff was advised of our demise. Further investigation using the
SpokeO website, I happened upon a Norm Sperling that turned out to be the person Jeff was looking for.
Sent Jeff the contact information and Jeff checked out the Facebook page for Norm and emailed him but
is still waiting for a replyBuffalo Bob Casale

Vietnam Memorial Update

My brother Fred recently forwarded me a couple of videos about your

plans to build and dedicate a memorial honoring those military men and women that served during the
Vietnam era. I could not open one of the videos but I was told that was the one that explained who to
send a donation and how to make out the check. Please forward that information. The video I was able
to view is great, nice job! I served in the Marine Corps from 1962 through 1966 including a stint in VN
in 1964 and 1965... Marty Winkel 1962
Other than receiving a nice email response from Ken Strafer, I havent heard from anyone as far as my
question about the donation and where to send a check. Regards...Marty
Sorry Marty...The information is included in each newsletter sometimes on the Home Page
http://hixnews.com always in the Honoring Our Vets and often in the Newsletter portion of the

newsletter. Thanks so much for your interest in the Memorial and your eagerness to help sustain the
endeavor...Buffalo Bob Casale AKA Speedy and that was not attributed to my sex life!!!
Donation checks should be made out to: Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial Project and
should be mailed to:

Hi Marty...Just wanted you to know that I never received an inquiry from you, but it's good to reconnect.
I now live in Florida, near Sarasota (see below). Bob Casale has sent you the info you need to get a
donation check out for the Memorial. You are your service info are definitely included in our list of
nearly 2,000 Vietnam War Era service members who will be honored. Bill Walden is our Project Team
Treasurer and primary local contact. Since he is commander of Hicksville's VFW Post and also the
newly elected VFW Commander for Nassau County, he is perfect as our local contact for Hicksville and
is doing a great job for us! Are you still running to keep in shape? I'm power walking the streets and use
our community fitness center's gym for treadmill, stationary bike and weight training. Gotta stay in
wrestling shape...remember!? All the bestJoe Carfora 1962

Hello BobAlways good to hear from you. You keep Hicksville in my heart and mind. Many months
ago you sent me a picture

Mike Goldsmith

Jack MacCarron

Jack's parents moved to summer of 58 but he and I stayed in touch. He still works for the Navy in
Maryland. Updates avionics on aircraft. I believe Mike passed away but am not sure. On another note I
want to send you a picture of me by my Huey. I was a recovery officer with the 68th Assault Helicopter

Company flying out of Bien-Hoa in Vietnam. Had to fly to Tainin to fix one of our birds with a
hydraulic leak. Tai-nin was 10 miles from Cambodian border and was defended by a South Vietnamese
Company.

Approximately June of 1969

Note the absence of leaves from the trees where Agent Orange was heavily sprayed. I'm at 100% combat
disabled as a result of AO. Seem to get worse as I get older and my golf game shows it. VA treats me
well and I feel lucky, especially when I help the newest Vets get whatever is due to them. I know how
the system works and have helped more than 50 veterans with different types of problems. I realized the
toughest place to get into the system is in Nassau County. Took me a year to get a Vietnam Vet buddy
into it. Maybe you can let me know how things are with you. Take Care and God Bless youChris

THANK YOU'S, WE GET THANK YOU'S!!
