INTRODUCTION: ELECTRONICS

COMPONENTS

An electronic component is any physical entity in an

electronic system whose intention is to affect the
electrons or their associated fields in a desired
manner consistent with the intended function of the
electronic system. Components are generally
intended to be in mutual electromechanical contact,
usually by being soldered to a printed circuit board
(PCB), to create an electronic circuit with a particular
function (for example an amplifier, radio receiver, or
oscillator). Components may be packaged singly or in
more or less complex groups as integrated circuits.
Various components and devices are described below.

Active components
Active components increase the power of a signal and
must be supplied with the signal and a source of
power. The signal is fed into one connection of the
active device and the amplified version taken from
another connection.
Passive components
Passive components do not increase the power of a
signal. They often cause power to be lost. Some can
increase the voltage at the expense of current, so
overall there is loss of power.
Resistors, Capacitors, Inductors & Diodes are the
examples of passive components.
