Faith FHE Lesson

Materials needed: Scriptures, an interesting object (like a picture of the Savior or scriptures or something), blanket or
cloth to cover object

Purpose: To help family members learn what faith is and how they can strengthen and nurture it.

Scripture: “…faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which
are not seen, which are true..” Alma 32:21

Lesson:
Attention Activity: Show the children an object (picture of the Savior or whatever) covered by a
piece of cloth.

Ask: Do you believe there is something under here? Why?

Let the children guess what they think the object might be. Then uncover the object. Point out
that even though they could not see the object, they believed it was there.

Explain that even though we have not seen Jesus Christ, we believe he is there. We see evidence
of his existence everywhere as we look at the world that he created, as we see the stars in the
heavens, and especially as we read the scriptures. We also have prophets who have told us that
they have seen him. Tell the children that today they will learn of someone from the Book of
Mormon who had such great faith that he actually saw Jesus Christ.

Brother of Jared with story figures: Using the enclosed summary and visuals, tell the story of The
Brother of Jared and the great faith that he had.

Read or Paraphrase Alma 32:26-43: This is where we read about faith being like a seed. Talk with your
family about just like we have nurture plants and take care of them, we also need to continually nurture
and take care of our faith by following the commandments and praying (among other things that will be
discussed in the following activity).

Ask them what they would do if they saw a plant struggling to grow. (They would give it some TLC,
which means that maybe they would change the location to a sunnier spot or give it more water or
transplant it into a bigger area or weed it or just take care of it more diligently.)

Relate : If they ever feel that their faith is wavering, that they should take the same kind of care. Maybe
they should change their “location” by not going to certain places or hanging out with certain people or
even reading/watching certain things. They might need more “water” which is like prayer, reading the
scriptures, and going to church. They might need to be “transplanted” into more fertile soil, by choosing
to spend time with friends that will help your faith to grow. Or they might need to “weed” sins out of

 their lives to allow in more sunlight and fertile soil.

Emphasize : That just as they would not to ignore a struggling plant and hope that it revived on its own,
that they should not ignore their faith. When it is wavering, it needs more care and more attention than
ever. And even if a plant is healthy today it can struggle later with future neglect, our faith can also
waver due to complacency or forgetting to “water” it.

“My Faith is Growing” Game: Tell your children that the leaves represent choices that will either help
or hinder the growth of their faith “seed”. Have the kids take turns drawing leaves from the bag and place
them either on the growing plant or the dying plant depending on what effect the action will have on their
faith.

Share: Relate a story from your life when you’ve either had your faith strengthened or when you’ve had
to show a lot of faith. Telling a personal story will really help it to be more meaningful to your family.

Bear your testimony about the importance of nurturing our faith.

Enrichment: Based on the ages and attention spans of your children, choose one or more of the following enrichment
activities to enhance the message of the lesson. Enrichment activities do not necessarily need to be
completed on the same night as the lesson. We often use them as reinforcement/reminders during the
week.

Faith in the Scriptures: Distribute pen and paper to all the family members. Set the timer for 3 minutes
(or whatever) and have them write down as many stories from the scriptures as they can where the person
had to show faith. Take turns reading your lists allowed and sharing why you think they showed faith.

Plant a Real Seed: Plant a seed and be prepared to take care of it and nurture it. Over the next several
weeks, as the plant grows, take the time to remind them of their lesson on faith and mention how we can
“water” our faith by praying, etc.

Faith Journal: Collect faith promoting experiences from your family all into one journal. Have kids take
turns writing in it and sharing special experiences. You can even add stories from your extended family.

Easiest Pumpkin Cookies Ever

All you need is THREE ingredients:

1 spice cake mix
1 bag chocolate chips (we prefer semi-sweet)
1 can (15-1/2 oz) plain pumpkin

Preheat the oven to 375°. Mix the ingredients together until combined. Place on cookie sheet in
rounded tablespoonfuls and bake at 375° for 6-7 minutes. Makes 2-3 dozen moist, flavorful
cookies! Enjoy!
