Project Evaluation

Both the Private and the Public sectors are investing large sums of money in schools through
the Khanya project. In order to justify this expenditure, it is necessary to monitor, on an
ongoing basis, whether the objectives of the project is being met. It is particularly important
to assess whether learner performance is increased through the use of technology.

Continuous internal evaluation is taking place. It is also necessary, however, to benefit from
the objective evaluation of an independent assessor. It is for this reason that a tender was
issued to procure the services of an External Assessment Agency to perform a continuous
evaluation of the Khanya processes and results. This tender was awarded to a multi-
disciplinary team from the University of Cape Town to start their activities on 1 July 2002.

The evaluation is broad, and focuses on:

• Appropriate ICT provisioning

• Educator effectiveness in the use of technology for curriculum delivery
• Learner performance

Regular assessment reports are issued. These reports are used by Khanya to take corrective
steps in areas where less than satisfactory results are reported. It is also used to publish the
successes of Khanya.
