Seit einem knappen Jahr steht der Sozialdemokrat Jürgen Roters
an der Spitze der Stadt, gestützt von einer rot-grünen Koalition
im Rat. Bei den Kommunalwahlen 2009 setzte er sich gegen zwei
offen schwule Gegenkandidaten von CDU und FDP durch.
Doch auch der 61-Jährige fühlt sich der Community langjährig ver-
bunden, in seiner Zeit als Polizeipräsident knüpfte er erste Kontak-
te, als Regierungspräsident von Köln versetzte er höchstpersönlich
am 1. August 2001 die ersten schwulen und lesbischen Paare in
den Stand der Eingetragenen Lebenspartnerschaft. Torsten Bless
sprach mit dem Oberbürgermeister über die schwul-lesbischen
Sportspiele.

For just over a year the social democrat Jürgen Roters has been
in the top position in the city, supported by a red-green coalition
in council. Curious: in the local elections of 2009 he defeated two
openly gay rival candidates from the Christian Democrats (CDU)
and the Free Democrats (FDP).
Nevertheless, the 61 year old has been bound to the community
for many years, in his time as the local Chief of Police he made
the first contacts, as district president of the Cologne area he
personally put into motion the first gay and lesbian registered
partnerships. Torsten Bless spoke with the Lord Mayor about the
upcoming gay and lesbian sporting event.

Welche Bedeutung haben die
Gay Games Ihrer Meinung nach
für die Stadt?
Man darf die Veranstaltung nicht
unterschätzen, vor allem, wenn
man bedenkt, dass 10.000 Teilneh-
mer erwartet werden. Wir stehen
dann im Mittelpunkt der Commu-
nity weltweit. Bei der Bewerbung
haben wir uns gegen Johannesburg
und Paris behauptet, wir haben be-
rühmte Vorläufer wie Amsterdam,
New York oder San Francisco, wir
stehen also in einer Reihe mit gro-
ßen Playern. Das Image der Stadt
hat in den letzten Jahren einige
Rückschläge erleben müssen. Da
war zum Beispiel der Einsturz des
Historischen Stadtarchivs, der auch
bis weit über unsere Grenzen hin-
aus ein nicht so gutes Bild auf unse-
re Stadt geworfen hat. Jetzt haben
wir eine große Veranstaltung, wo
Menschen zusammenkommen, wo
man feiert, wo man Sport treibt,
wo man auch die Toleranz und die
Lebensfreude der Kölner zum Aus-
druck bringen kann.
Manche Teilnehmer kommen
aus Ländern, in denen Homo-
sexualität unter Strafe steht,
etwa aus Burkina Faso, den
Vereinigten Arabischen Emira-
ten, Uganda – was können sie
Ihrer Meinung nach von ihrem
Aufenthalt in der Stadt mit in
die Heimat nehmen?
Die Gay Games führen die Men-
schen zusammen. Sie haben eine
klare Botschaft, dass Minderheiten
nicht ausgegrenzt werden dürfen
und man einfach sehr viel mensch-
In your opinion, how important
are the Gay Games for the city?
One cannot underestimate this
event, in particular when one
thinks that over 10,000 partici-
pants are expected. We will stand
on centre stage of the community
worldwide. At the bid we held our
ground against Johannesburg and
Paris, we have well known prede-
cessors like Amsterdam, New York
and San Francisco, therefore we
are playing in the major league.
The image of the city has had to
experience a few set-backs in pre-
vious years. For example, the col-
lapse of the city archive, which sent
a rather ordinary picture of the city
well beyond German borders. Now
we have a big event, where people
come together, where one can
celebrate, where one plays sport,
where one can also embody toler-
ance and the joie de vivre of the
people of Cologne.
Some participants come from
countries where homosexua-
lity is illegal, such as Burkina
Faso, the United Arab Emirates,
Uganda – what can these peo-
ple take back with them after
their visit to Cologne?
The Gay Games brings people
together. They have a clear mes-
sage, that minorities are not to
be ostracised and that we can get
along with each other much more
humanely, when one observes the
principles of fairness and tolerance.
Human rights cannot be stopped by
national boundaries.
Today we have an excellent oppor-

licher miteinander umgeht,
wenn man die Grundsätze von Fair-
ness und Toleranz beachtet. Und ich
hoffe, das wird auch ein Signal sein
an andere Länder. Man kann die
Menschenrechte nicht an Staatsgren-
zen Halt machen lassen.
Heute haben wir so eine hervorragen-
de Möglichkeit, solche Botschaften
über das Internet, über die Medien
auch international so zu verbreiten,
dass sich auch Regimes, die auto-
ritärer, rückständiger sind, letztlich
dagegen nicht schützen können. Und
deswegen brauchen wir solche Signa-
le, hier ist eine Stadt, in der die Men-
schen gemeinsam feiern, in der die
Schwulen und Lesben, Bisexuellen
und Transgender herzlich willkom-
men sind, das ist auch eine sehr gute
politische Botschaft.
Was tut die Stadt Köln, um die
Gay Games zu unterstützen?
Wir sind seit langer Zeit sehr eng mit
dem Organisationskomitee verbun-
den und haben sehr intensiv zusam-
mengearbeitet. Wir helfen natürlich
immer dann, wenn Genehmigungen
erteilt werden müssen, wenn schnel-
le Wege und schnelle Entscheidun-
gen getroffen werden müssen, bei
der Verkehrsführung etwa, bei vielen
organisatorischen Fragen. Da ist eini-
ges geschehen, um die Sportstätten,
die wir präsentieren, auch wirklich
gut vorzeigen zu können. Wir brau-
chen uns da trotz unserer Haushalts-
schwierigkeiten nicht vor der Weltöf-
fentlichkeit zu verstecken.
Sie haben die Haushaltslage
angesprochen. Für den Fall des
Falles, dass diese Gay Games
wie vor ihnen Amsterdam 1998
oder Sydney 2002 große Verluste
einfahren sollten, wäre die Stadt
Köln bereit und in der Lage, in die
Bresche zu springen?
Nach dem jetzigen Anmeldestand
sind die Veranstalter sehr zuversicht-
lich, dass sie keine Defizite einfahren.
Sollte aus irgendeinem Grund etwas
Unvorhersehbares passieren, was wir
nicht hoffen und auch nicht erwarten,
dann werden wir die Veranstalter
nicht allein lassen. Aber es gibt kei-
nen Grund, darüber nachzudenken,
weil die notwendigen Zahlen für eine
schwarze Null bereits überschritten
sind, von daher kann man sehr zuver-
sichtlich in die Zukunft schauen.
Werden Sie sich auch selbst bei
den Gay Games einbringen?
Ich bin natürlich bei der Eröffnungs-
feier dabei und werde auf jeden Fall
den einen oder anderen Lauf mitma-
chen, den Halbmarathon habe ich mir
schon vorgemerkt. Und ich sehe mir
auch einige Veranstaltungen an. Da
ich sportlich interessiert bin, ist das
für mich keine Belastung, sondern
eine Freude.

anything about them. Therefore we
need such signals, here is a city in
which people can celebrate toge-
ther, in which gays, lesbians, trans-
genders and bisexuals are heartily
welcomed, that is also a very good
political message.
What is the City of Cologne do-
ing to support the Gay Games?
We have been in close contact with
the organising committee for a long
time and have worked together very
intensely. We have also been of as-
sistance when authorisations nee-
ded to be granted, when rapid so-
lutions and quick decisions needed
to be met, as well as traffic routing
and numerous organisational ques-
tions. There has been a fair amount
of work performed on the sporting
venues that we are presenting in or-
der to really show them off well. We
do not need to hide ourselves from
the public eye despite our budget
difficulties.
You mentioned the tight city
budget. For the worst case, that
these games leave behind large
losses like those in Amsterdam
1998 or Sydney 2002, would the
City of Cologne be ready and in
the position to come to the res-
cue?
With the present number of applica-
tions, the organisers are very confi-
dent that they will not leave behind
a deficit. If, through unforeseen
circumstances something should
happen, which we do not envis-
age, then we will not leave the or-
ganisers standing alone. However,
there is no reason to contemplate
this because the necessary figures
for breaking even have just been
achieved, and from this one can
look to the future very confidently.
Will you personally be taking
part in the Gay Games?
Naturally, I will be attending the
opening ceremony and will indeed
participate in one or two of the run-
ning events, I have already made a
note of the half marathon. I will also
view a few of the events. As I am
very interested in sports, I do not
see this as a burden but rather as
a pleasure.

Floors präsentiert die Colour die weltweit bekanntesten
DJs, darunter Tony Moran, Fabio White, Steven Redant,
Micky Friedmann oder Miss Thunderpussy, Agnes und Flava

ausgezeichneter Kraft-Artisten die Menge.

Lesben und Schwule gibt es in al-
len Sportarten. Aber nur wenige wagen
es auch, sich offen zu ihrer Homosexu-
alität zu bekennen. Die Wanderausstel-
lung „Gegen die Regeln“ lädt ein, sich
dem Tabuthema Homosexualität im
Sport zu nähern. Große Plakate erzählen
Geschichten von Outings, Doppelle-
ben und tragischen Schicksalen von
Spitzensportlern, die mit ihrer öffentlich
gemachten Homosexualität zu kämpfen
hatten. Und auch die Geschichte der Gay Games ist hier zu sehen.

Szenegesichter - Heute: Dagmar Ziege
Mögen die Spiele beginnen
„Ich freue mich jetzt sehr auf die Eröffnungsfeier der Gay Games. Und ich
rufe alle auf zu kommen“, sagt Dagmar Ziege. „Nicht nur die Lesben und
Schwulen, die ganze Kölner Bevölkerung ist herzlich eingeladen!“
Die stellvertretende Geschäftsführerin des StadtSportBund Köln (SSBK) ist
gleichzeitig als stellvertretende Leiterin des Arbeitskreises Sport
für die Organisation aller 35 Disziplinen verantwortlich. Seit
etwa sieben Jahren, schon von Beginn der Bewerbungs-
phase an, engagiert sich Dagmar Ziege für die Gay
Games. Nun trennen sie nur noch ein paar hektische
Tage vom großen Ereignis.
Bis dahin gilt es allerdings, noch einiges zu er-
ledigen: Unter anderem müssen Listen mit den
Erreichbarkeiten der Verantwortlichen erstellt
werden, eine Setzliste für die Golfer will festge-
legt sein und nicht zuletzt muss dafür gesorgt
werden, dass die Duschen an den Sportstät-
ten funktionieren und genug Klopapier für
die annähernd 10.000 Teilnehmer bereitliegt.
„Schließlich sind die sanitären Anlagen bei ei-
nem solchen Sportereignis auch ein bisschen die
Visitenkarte der Ausrichter“, findet Ziege.
Dem Sport ist die gebürtige Berlinerin schon ihr
ganzes Leben lang verbunden. Als Kind wollte sie
erst Hockeyspielerin werden, als der DFB dann aber den
Frauen endlich bessere Bedingungen bot, fand sie doch
zum Fußball, wo sie als Spielerin (und später als Trainerin beim
SC Janus) einige Erfolge feierte.
Nach Köln kam Dagmar Ziege 1982 für ein Studium an der Sporthochschu-
le, hier lernte sie auch ihre langjährige Freundin Rosi Seidler kennen. An
ihrem 20. Jahrestag im Mai dieses Jahres haben die beiden geheiratet. Für
Flitterwochen bleibt den Gay-Games-Organisatorinnen jetzt aber keine
Zeit, ebenso wenig wie für freie Wochenenden oder überhaupt viel Freizeit.
„Aber nach den Spielen geht es in den Urlaub“, freut sich Ziege.
Über die Zusammenarbeit mit der Stadt sei sie sehr zufrieden, die Unter-
stützung sei toll, betont sie. Während der Gay Games ist Ziege für die Be-
treuung der Sportarten Golf, Fußball und Sportschießen verantwortlich, so-
dass sie selber nicht aktiv teilnehmen wird. „Ich hoffe, dass alles gut klappt
und mein Handy möglichst wenig klingelt.“ Wir drücken die Daumen! (ar)

Let the Games begin!
“I am really looking forward to the opening ceremony of the Gay Games,
and I call on all of you to come”, says Dagmar Ziege. “Not only gays and
lesbians, but the whole of Cologne is heartily invited!”
The assistant manager of the City Sport Federation Cologne (SSBK), and
at the same time deputy director of the working party sport, is
responsible for the organisation of all the 35 disciplines.
For about seven years, even at the time of the appli-
cation phase, Dagmar Ziege was involved with the
Gay Games. It is now only a few hectic days that
separate her from this big event.
Up until then, there is still lots to do: this in-
cludes organising the contact lists for the

responsible parties, a seeding list for golfers
has to be produced and last but not least, it
has to be checked that the showers at the
sporting venues work, and that there is
enough toilet paper for the close to 10,000
participants. “In the long run, it is the sanita-
tion at such sporting events that are a little
like the business cards of the hosts”, says
Ziege.
The Berlin native has been connected with sport
for her whole life. As a child, she wanted to be a
hockey player, but as the German Football League
(DFB) finally offered better conditions for women, she fi-
nally settled on soccer, where as a player (and later as trainer
for the SC Janus) has had quite a bit of success.
Dagmar Ziege came to Cologne in 1982 to study at the Sports Academy. It
was here where she met her long time girlfriend, Rosi Seidler. On their 20th
Anniversary in May this year they got married. For the honeymoon there is
unfortunately not enough time for the Gay Games organiser, just as there
is hardly any free time on weekends, or in general. “But after the Games I
will be going on holidays”, says Ziege most pleased.
Ziege is very satisfied with the cooperation from the city, the support has
been fantastic, she points out. During the Gay Games, Ziege is responsible
for the support of the sporting events golf, soccer and shooting, so that she
cannot actually participate herself. “I hope that it all works out and that my
mobile phone doesn’t ring too often”. We wish her all the best. (ar)
