Translation
Father Here we are, at an amusement park. We’re
going to have lots of fun!
Mihiro Dad, I want to ride that!
Father The flying carpet?...Let’s see. Oh, you have
to be over ten years old to ride that.
Mihiro What? Then I want to go over there!
Father Uh...That’s the Haunted House. It’s scary!
Mihiro That’s alright. I always watch (the TV
series) “Ge Ge Ge No Kitaro.” I want to
see what kind of ghosts pop out.
Father That’s a problem. I really don’t like scary
things.
Mihiro What? You’re afraid of ghosts? You’re so
not cool!

Grammar Points
te mitai

Today’s grammar point is -te mitai, which is made of (i) -te form of verb, (ii) masu-form of miru which
means to do something for the experience or in order to see the result, and (iii) tai, which is an auxiliary
adjective which expresses a desire to do something. So, it means to want to do something for the experi-
ence or in order to see the result.

 Formation:

V.te + mi (masu-stem of miru) + tai

Examples:

いつか、ピラミッドを見てみたい。
Itsuka, piramiddo o mite mitai.
Someday I want to (try and) see the pyramids.

富士山に登ってみたい。
Fujisan ni nobotte mitai.
I want to try and climb Mt. Fuji.

世界一周旅行してみたい。
Sekai isshū ryokō shite mitai.
I want to travel around the world.
