Including a “Quizzing” Feature in

MyMathLab® Homework: Mixing in

Items
without Learning Aids

Why do this?
Some students get an unrealistic sense of what
they’ve learned after MML homework because they
don’t stop to consider that they used multiple
attempts and learning aids to earn their homework
grade.

Students need to be able to assess their own level of

learning.

Especially
important if MML is used only for
homework!
How to Do This
Create the HW assignment as usual

Usethe “Copy and Edit” feature which allows you to

make changes to an item within an exercise set.

Use the “Copy and Edit” to limit the number of

attempts on a particular item within a homework
assignment.

Use the “Instructor Tip” feature to warn students that

they get 1 chance on some items.
Select homework items using the usual MML homework
creation process.
Step One: Click on the first item in the assignment and
then Click “Copy and Edit”
Question opens in the MEB (Math Exercise Builder)
Step Two: Click “Save and Edit”
Step 3: Name the new item. Click OK.

5.3.7 - No Help
The new item will now appear at the top of the section list of
items.
Step 4: Add the item to the assignment list and
move it so that it follows the item that was copied
to create it.
Repeat as desired to build full assignment.
Student Experience: Item with Learning Aids . . . .
… followed by item of same type with no learning aids.

The student still gets multiple attempts at the

item. Ask My Instructor and Print are retained
but can be turned off at the assignment level.
Create an Assessment Item
by Limiting the Number of
Attempts to One
Follow the steps to open an item in the MEB.
Double click the answer box.
Click on Step 2: Define Answers
Check “Override Default” and change to 1 then save.
Repeat the process for other items as desired.
Adding Instructor Tip

 Since the student is getting only 1 attempt on these

items, it is a good idea to give them a warning.

 This is done by the instructor tip feature.

Click on the title of the item in the list of selected items.
Click on “Add Instructor Tip.”
Type in the tip.
Student Experience

This pops up when the

click on the item number.
