At the heart of VERSA MAX is our patented VersaPort gas piston system;
an extremely-reliable, semi-automatic operating system consisting of
seven gas ports and two gas pistons for enhanced load versatility, while

self-regulates gas pressure based on the length of the shell, for flawless

VERSA MAX proved its reliability in an extreme test of endurance. We
cycled hundreds of thousands of rounds through VERSA MAX in
temperature extremes ranging from -200 F to 1200 F and it passed the
test! Reliability is essential, but VERSA MAX is durable as well.
Designed for the field, VERSA MAX provides extreme corrosion
resistance with its anodized aluminum receiver; TriNyte-coated barrel
with nickel-plated bore (camo guns have nickel-plated barrels and
bores with camo outer layer); nickel-Teflon plated internal gas system
components; stainless steel magazine tube; aluminum action tube; and
nickel-plated springs. Housed in a durable soft-touch synthetic stock

PHOENIX, AZ – -(Ammoland.com)- It’s a blast from the past – for the
first time in two decades, all-day dove hunting is returning to Arizona
starting Sept. 1 for the early season, which ends Sept. 15.
You can read all about it in the “Arizona Dove and Band-tailed Pigeon
Regulations 2010-11” that have been distributed to license dealers
statewide and are also available online at www.azgfd.gov.
The Sandhill Crane Regulations have also been posted and distributed.
This year there is a new juniors-only crane hunt near Gila Bend in
addition to the one in Units 30A, 30B, 31 and 32. The crane hunts are by
drawing only. The application period started Aug. 2 and the deadline for
the department to receive applications is Aug. 31 (postmarks don’t
count).
Arizona Game and Fish Department biologists said the early season half-
day dove hunting restrictions were eliminated by the Game and Fish
Commission this past June due to a number of changes the state has
experienced.
“The half-day dove hunting restrictions were implemented in
1989 in response to declining numbers of both mourning
doves and white-winged doves,” said Mike Rabe, small game
program supervisor.
Since that time, explained Rabe, dove hunting participation has declined
and places to hunt doves near urban centers have also declined.
“As a result, Arizona dove hunters must travel farther to hunt
doves and few hunters participate,” Rabe said.
In addition, recent data indicates current harvest rates are low and dove
are abundant.
Game and Fish conducted a hunter survey in March and a majority of
hunters said they favor lifting the half-day hunt restrictions.

Rabe pointed out that removing the half-day restrictions also
eliminates the need for two hunting zones for the early dove
season. “This sure makes it much more simple for our
hunters, and us too.”
Don’t forget that once again this year, there is a juniors-only dove hunt at
the Robbins Butte Wildlife Area near Buckeye on Sept. 4-5. Following
the morning hunt each day, the Chandler Rod and Gun Club will be
providing its famous pancake breakfast on site for the young hunters and
their mentors.
Shooting stations will be assigned on a first-come, first-served process
unless there are more people desiring to participate than available
shooting stations, then a drawing will be held at 4:45 a.m. But those who
routinely work the hunt say a drawing has never been necessary yet. It’s
a great time, bring your youngsters.
Also keep in mind that the late dove season is Nov. 19 through Jan. 2.
“This late season is mourning doves only – all the white-
winged doves will have migrated south. But it’s a much more
leisurely hunt – the best times to hunt are in the late
afternoon,” Rabe said.
The Arizona Game and Fish Department prohibits discrimination on the

Gun Collecting: Machine Guns That Don’t Fire

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- It might seem like a strange thing to
buy; a machine gun that doesn’t actually shoot.
But for collectors this really isn’t such an odd thing. Consider that
military airplanes in museums don’t exactly fly, and those tanks you’ll
see outside National Guard posts aren’t going to be doing any fighting
any time soon. So while it may seem like heresy to the faithful gun
collector, one alternative when it comes to machine guns is actually
getting one that is “non-gun” or “dummy gun.” But there is a lot more to
it.
Actually until the last decade even machine guns that couldn’t fire had
been strictly regulated in many states. However, the Bureau of Alcohol,
Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), now sees that the only part to
be concerned with in a machine gun is the receiver. For a long time even
non-operable machine guns had to be registered.
Today the rules have changed, and that “receiver” is the key
to the puzzle.
These are built from what are called “parts kits,” and then assembled in a
way to make the gun look complete, but still remain completely harmless
as a firearm. These cannot fire or even chamber ammunition. The
receiver, the portion of the gun that chambers and essentially operates

the weapon, is replaced or cut. This renders the weapon inoperable, and
for this reason ATF has no actual classification for dummy or non-guns,
except to say what is not a gun.
The Gun Control Act of 1968 defines the term “firearm” to
mean in part, “…any weapon (including a starter gun) which
will or is designed to or may be readily converted to expel a
projectile by the action of an explosive” or “the frame or
receiver any such weapon.”
Furthermore, the National Firearms Act specifies that a “machinegun” is
“…any weapon which shoots automatically more than one shot, without
manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger…[and] the frame
or receiver of any such weapon.”
The most important part regarding this matter is listed in the NFA as
well in terms of how to create a proper non-gun:
“A machinegun receiver that has been properly destroyed
may be used to assemble a ‘dummy gun’ that is not subject to
the controls of the National Firearms Act or Gun Control Act.
When sections of destroyed machinegun receivers are used to
build a dummy gun and the severed sections welded back
together, the dummy gun receiver must be at least one (1)
inch shorter than the original machinegun receiver. The bolt,
if present, must be welded to the receiver in the closed
position. The breech of the barrel must be welded closed and
an obstruction welded into the barrel. Alternatively, a solid
metal/plastic bar in the same shape and configuration as the
original model maybe used as a ‘dummy receiver.’”
Thus if the gun can’t fire or operate, it isn’t technically a machine gun in
their eyes and is legal for ownership – but as always check the local laws.
For example, dummy guns are still legal in California, but these require
an orange plug at the end and the size of the magazine is restricted, while
New York City has cracked down and banned anything that looks like a
gun – including all toy guns. But if you can own these, the dummy guns
make a good way of filing a hole in your collection.
Alex Cranmer, vice president of International Military Antiques (ima-
usa.com) agrees that non-guns are a great way to round out a collection.
“You really can’t tell until you go to see if the action moves.
What I like to say is that we’re selling Model T Fords with
solid engine blocks. That’s the difference between replica
guns and a display gun. The display is 90 percent original
parts.”
One thing to keep in mind however is how the conversion was done.
Some states have laws on modifying guns, this reporter has personally
encountered a “non-gun” that probably would have been able to chamber
and cycle rounds, thus it wasn’t really a “non-gun” after all. ATF can
confirm if a firearm meets the criteria, but it will need to actually see the
example.

While this might seem fairly complex, the best advice is to purchase any
non-guns from a specialized and reputable dealer, rather than from an
individual at a militaria show or online, unless you are certain the item
meets the aforementioned standards. As previously mentioned you
should check for local laws, and be sure to ask any sellers if they are
familiar with the National Firearms Act or Gun Control Act. If they say
“no” then they can’t possibly claim to be compliant to ATF standards. In
those cases it is best to walk away from any potential transaction.
Alternatively some collectors opt to go a bit to rely on a modern-made
display copies, and these similar to non-guns, except in that none of the
parts are real, but from any distance they look good. Still many collectors
prefer the machine guns where at least “most” of it was actually there.
However, the days of non-guns maybe coming to an end, at least in
terms of availability. In 2005 a ban was been placed on the importation
of these parts kits. Thus the items that are in the country are the last of
the so-called “new” ones will be seeing. So get those machine guns
anyway you can, and while you can.

Shane Barnhart Wins both NRA National Smallbore Three-
Position and Smallbore Prone Championships at Camp Perry

FAIRFAX, VA --(Ammoland.com)- Staff Sergeant Shane Barnhart with
the Army Marksmanship Unit (USAMU) based in Fort Benning, Georgia,
claimed his first Prone Championship title and fourth 3-Position
Championship at the NRA Smallbore Championships held July 22-29 at
Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio.
Barnhart, from Phenix City, Alabama, became only the third person to
win Camp Perry’s Three-Position Championships and Prone
Championships in the same year. His teammate Joseph Hein
accomplished this feat last year and Lones Wigger Jr. did it once in 1963
and again in 1973.
After clinching the 3-Position Championships with a score of 2358-126X,
Barnhart got off to a slow start in the Prone Championships before
coming back strong to take first place with a 4790-355X.
Camp Perry’s infamous wind wasn’t the only challenge Barnhart faced in
the Prone Championships.
“I knew going into Any Sight that I had Abalo and Kemp,
both very fine shooters, to keep up with,” Shane said of his
fellow shooters.
1LT Christopher Abalo of Glendora, California, also on the USAMU, took
the Prone Championship’s silver medal with an aggregate of 4786-355X.
Charles Kemp from Mobile, Alabama, rounded out the top three and was
awarded bronze as well as High Civilian and High Senior with a 4786-
338X.
In the 3-Position Championships, Corland, Ohio’s Amanda Luoma
claimed silver along with the titles of Woman Champion, Junior
Champion and Civilian Champion by shooting a 2349-113X. Megan Lee
of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina, took the bronze and Intermediate
Junior Champion title with her 2343-93X.
Amanda McMullin from Pomona, California, shot her way to the 2010
Woman Champion title in the Prone Championships, finishing with a

Washington, DC --(Ammoland.com)- ON THE FLOOR OF THE
SENATE TODAY Senator Thune quoted GOA accurately. Elena Kagan is
going to be a disaster on the Supreme Court.
Our gun rights are hanging by a thread. Prior to the vote in the U.S.
Senate today, Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama sounded the alarm:
“Most Americans are totally unaware [that] the Second Amendment
hangs by a mere thread [by] two 5-4 decisions recently….”
He was referring, of course, to the two gun-related decisions over the
past couple of years where the Supreme Court narrowly ruled in favor of
gun rights.
With this in mind, several Senators spent almost an hour today talking

exclusively about the Second Amendment, its importance to all
Americans across the country, and the danger that President Obama’s
most recent pick to the U.S. Supreme Court poses to our gun rights.
Sadly, the Senate today voted 63-37 to confirm Elena Kagan to the U.S.
Supreme Court. While this is disappointing, you need to realize that we
got more votes against Kagan than we have ever gotten against a
Supreme Court Justice that we’ve opposed — more than we garnered
against Justices Sotomayor or Ginsburg. (Imagine, Justice Gingsburg
only received three negative votes!)
Today, we gained tremendous ground. There were Senators who voted
against Kagan today who had NEVER before voted against a Supreme
Court Justice. And come this November, we plan to gain even more
ground when a new batch of candidates take their seats in the U.S.
Senate… when we will probably be able to filibuster (and defeat) any
future U.S. Supreme Court Justice that President Obama nominates.
So thank you for all your help in fighting this nominee. Now,
it is time for us to shift into high gear and hold the turncoats
in Congress accountable. But more on that — and on today’s
vote — below.

While today’s loss on the Kagan nomination was disappointing, don’t
forget that we won a VERY KEY battle last week against legislation to
squelch our voice 60 days prior to a general election — legislation known
as the DISCLOSE Act.
This victory means that we will be able to hold accountable those
Senators who stabbed gun owners in the back and voted for Elena Kagan
today — and we’ll be able to hold them accountable all the way up to
Election Day.
So gun owners need to stay engaged in the battle to retain and reclaim
our rights. Even though Congress will be out of session this month, you
can help us INCREASE our voice in Congress — and INCREASE our
ability to reach more gun owners – by renewing your membership with
GOA and encouraging others to do the same.

McConnell praised GOA’s uncompromising approach on the floor of the
Senate when he said that the legislation was “not about the Democrats’
affinity for the Second Amendment. If it were, they would have carved
out an exception for the Gun Owners of America as well. As it is, the GOA
vehemently opposes this bill. Why? Because they know it restricts First
Amendment rights.”

Many of you have Senators who pride themselves as being independent
thinkers. They claim they are “Blue Dog” Democrats who support the
Second Amendment.
But guess what:
Virtually every single Blue Dog voted IN FAVOR of Kagan today. To see

Senators Harry Reid of Nevada, Jim Webb of Virginia, Max Baucus and
John Tester of Montana, and many more… all the Blue Dogs voted for
Elena Kagan, with the exception of Ben Nelson of Nebraska.
You need to realize: These so-called Blue Dogs can’t claim
they didn’t know Kagan’s record on gun control. Nor can
Lindsay Graham of South Carolina and the other four
Republicans who voted for Kagan. They can’t claim that
Kagan’s record is silent on the gun issue. They can’t claim she
might support gun owner rights in the future.
Senator after Senator sounded the alarm on the floor of the Senate. Just
take a look at what a dozen Senators had to say about Elena Kagan’s
views on Second Amendment rights:
* Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL): “Ms. Kagan’s record regarding
the Second Amendment leaves little doubt that she will be
hostile to the rights of law-abiding citizens to own and
possess firearms.”
* Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA): “Solicitor General Kagan’s
record clearly shows she is a supporter of restrictive gun
laws and has worked on numerous initiatives to undercut
Second Amendment fundamental rights.”
* Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL): “Ms. Kagan has spent her
career implementing antigun initiatives and evidence of her
antagonistic attitude towards the Second Amendment can
be found from the beginning of her legal career.”
* Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT): “Ms. Kagan also worked in the
Clinton administration to weaken and limit other individual
rights such as the Second Amendment right to keep and bear
arms. In her hearing, Ms. Kagan refused to acknowledge
any real limits on the Federal Government’s power, which
the Supreme Court has already expanded far beyond
anything America’s Founders intended, to regulate
everything imaginable in the name of interstate commerce.”
* Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA): “Documents made available
from the Clinton Library show she was a key player in that
administration’s gun control efforts. She was a key advocate

for multiple gun control proposals and even authored
multiple Executive Orders that placed restrictions on gun
owner rights.”
* Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS): “General Kagan’s prior work
suggests that she would not protect an individual’s
constitutional right to bear arms. As a policy advisor to
President Clinton, Kagan promoted several gun control
proposals, including background checks for all gun
purchases in the secondary market, a gun tracing initiative,
and giving law enforcement the ability to retain background
check information from lawful gun sales. She also drafted
executive orders to restrict the importation of
semiautomatic rifles and to require all Federal law
enforcement officers to install locks on their weapons.”
* Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX): “I was also troubled by her
testimony with regard to the Second Amendment — the right
to keep and bear arms. She did say the recent decisions in
Heller and McDonald are ‘settled law,’ but I worry that her
interpretation of settled law means until there are five new
Justices who take a look at that settled law and just decide to
change it…. Last year, [Justice Sonia Sotomayor] testified
that Heller was settled law. But last month, she joined in a
dissenting opinion in McDonald urging it be overturned,
saying she did not believe the Second Amendment conferred
a fundamental individual right to keep and bear arms.”
* Sen. George LeMieux (R-FL): “I am also concerned about
Solicitor General Kagan’s views on the right to bear arms
enumerated in the Second Amendment. I think she has too
little regard for some of our Constitution’s most
fundamental protections. As a law clerk, she was dismissive
of the Second Amendment, saying she was not sympathetic
to the amendment.”
* Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID): “I am convinced [Kagan] does not
believe the Second Amendment reserves to all Americans a
strong and broad right to bear arms…. Countless law-
abiding Americans were denied their constitutional rights to
keep and bear arms for way too long. It is imperative that
the next Supreme Court Justice fully understand and accept
and support these rights. I am not convinced that Ms. Kagan
does, and that causes me great concern.”
* Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX): “[I have] serious
concerns about her Second Amendment views and her
correlating judicial record on the Second Circuit Court.”
* Sen. John Ensign (R-NV): “When I had the opportunity to
ask Ms. Kagan about her views on the Founders’ intent of
the Second Amendment, she informed me that although she
had read much analysis regarding the Second Amendment,
she had never studied its history or origin. Certainly, this
statement was surprising to me, especially given her

FORT BENNING, Ga. --(Ammoland.com)- Staff Sgt. Josh Richmond,
U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, won a gold medal in Men’s Double Trap
at the 50th International Shooting Sports Federation World

Championships today, securing a slot for the United States in the event
at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Richmond equaled the current world record after shooting a perfect 50-
out-of-50 in the final round for a total score of 196. He came into the
final round trailing Russia’s Vasily Mosin, who was on a world record
pace after qualifying, but his perfect round sealed the deal to claim the
title.
“It simply feels great,” said Richmond. “To win a world title,
equaling the world record and securing an Olympic quota
place… I still don’t know how I made it.”
Richmond’s efforts helped secure a precious Olympic quota slot in the
first match shooters were eligible to do so for the 2012 games. While
Team USA will select which athletes will fill the slots earned leading up
to the games, Richmond’s performance on the world stage and lofty
world ranking can only help increase his chances to make the trek to
London.
“I have been junior World Champion in 2005 but to win a
title in the open category five years later is a dream come
true,” said Richmond.
Richmond’s USAMU teammate and 2008 Olympian Sgt. Jeff Holguin
finished just off the podium in fourth place with a final score of 192 after
dealing with a malfunction.
The USA’s three-man team of Richmond, Holguin and William Crawford
set a new Men’s Double Trap team world record with a score of 433 out
of 450.
The World Championships continue in Munich until its conclusion Aug.
8. The USAMU’s Sgt. Vincent Hancock will look to ride the wave of
momentum provided by Richmond in the Men’s Trap event. Hancock is
the current Olympic, World and National champion in Men’s Trap.

in cooperation with the Steel Challenge Shooting Association, has
launched a survey asking fans of the shooting sports to weigh in on who
they think will win this year’s Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting
Championships.
Fans can vote for their favorite shooters by going to
www.WomenofUSPSA.com, clicking the Steel Challenge logo and casting
votes in 16 different categories. The voting will conclude at 5:00pm EST
on Tuesday, August 17 and the final results will be announced on
Wednesday, August 18. Competition is set to begin Thursday morning,
the 19th, on the Steel Challenge ranges in Piru, Calif. The match will
conclude Saturday, August 21 when the final shots are fired in the open
pistol division and a new overall World Speed Shooting Champion is
crowned.
“Women of USPSA is always looking for ways to keep
shooters active both on and off the range, so we’ve partnered
with SCSA to provide an opportunity for everyone to cast
their vote for their favorite shooters at the Steel Challenge,”

This legislation corrects a longstanding inequity in the Internal Revenue
Code by permitting firearm and ammunition manufacturers to pay the
federal excise tax payment on a quarterly basis, just as other industries
that support conservation through a federal excise tax do. Currently,
firearms and ammunition manufacturers pay this tax on a bi-weekly
schedule, forcing many manufacturers to borrow money to ensure on-
time payment. Industry members spend thousands of staff-hours
administering the necessary paperwork to successfully complete the bi-
weekly tax payments—monies that are due to the federal government
long before manufacturers are paid by their customers.
Importantly, HR 5552 pays for itself and does not add to the budget
deficit. Nor does the bill lower the amount of conservation dollars
collected by lowering the tax rate. It simply adjusts the payment schedule
to a quarterly period.
“This bill strengthens wildlife conservation funding in
America,” said NSSF Senior Vice President and General
Counsel Lawrence G. Keane.
“By enabling manufacturers to grow their businesses, excise
tax receipts will actually grow. We are thankful for the
tremendous support and leadership of Senators Max Baucus
and Mike Crapo. Clearly, their vision in championing this
bipartisan, pro-conservation, pro-business legislation allowed
for smooth passage of the bill.”
Keane added, “We also want to thank Majority Leader Harry
Reid for expediting the legislative process by allowing the
Senate to vote on the House-passed version of the bill.
Senator Reid has long supported and fought for issues
important to our industry and for hunters and gun owners
both in Nevada and across the United States.”
The firearm and ammunition excise tax is the major revenue source for
funding the Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund (also known as the Pittman-
Robertson Trust Fund). Last year, firearm and ammunition
manufacturers contributed approximately $450 million dollars to
wildlife conservation through excise tax payments.
There is no organized opposition to this legislation.
“With passage of excise tax improvement in the House and
Senate, it is our hope that President Obama will act fast to
sign this legislation into law,” said Keane.

Passage of HR 5552 would not have been possible without the hard work
of many organizations, including a broad coalition of more than 35
conservation groups that are members of the American Wildlife
Conservation Partners. This coalition includes the National Rifle
Association, Ducks Unlimited, Safari Club International and the
Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation, which made passage of this bill
a priority.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Association of Fish and
Wildlife Agencies also supported this legislation as did the Internal
Revenue Service-Tax and Trade Bureau, which collects the excise tax.

Charlotte, NC --(Ammoland.com)- Yesterday, the U.S. Senate
confirmed Elena Kagan to the highest Court in the land.
To NRA members and gun owners nationwide, Ms. Kagan presents a
clear and present danger to the right to keep and bear arms.
Her political record reveals that she does not believe the Second
Amendment guarantees a fundamental right and, in her recent
testimony, she refused to acknowledge respect for the God-given right of
self-defense. That is why, more than a month ago, the NRA announced
its strong opposition to Elena Kagan’s confirmation to the Court. In that
announcement, it was made very clear that this vote matters and will be
considered in the NRA’s candidate evaluations.
The U.S. Supreme Court has affirmed that the Second Amendment
guarantees a fundamental, individual right that applies to all law-abiding
Americans. Nonetheless, during the hearings Ms. Kagan refused to state
her support for the Second Amendment, saying only that the matter was
“settled law.” When asked about the Heller decision, Justice Sonia
Sotomayor used the phrase “settled law” repeatedly during her
confirmation hearings to win support. Justice Sotomayor then worked to
destroy the Second Amendment in the McDonald case. We have no
doubt that Ms. Kagan shares the same view of the Second Amendment.
Since she has no judicial record, we have only her political record to
examine. And that political record demonstrates a clear hostility to our
right to keep and bear arms. As a clerk for Justice Thurgood Marshall,
Ms. Kagan said she was “not sympathetic” to a challenge to Washington,
D.C.’s ban on firearms. As a domestic policy advisor in the Clinton White
House, a colleague described her as “immersed” in Clinton’s aggressive
assaults on the Second Amendment. As U.S. Solicitor General, Ms.
Kagan chose not to file a brief last year in the landmark McDonald case,
thus taking the position that incorporating the Second Amendment and
applying it to the states was of no interest to the Obama Administration
or the federal government.
The expansive support that self-defense laws, the decisions in the

historic Heller and McDonald cases, and the Second Amendment enjoy
from the American public is a clear indication that Elena Kagan’s radical
views are out of the mainstream. Any nominee, that far out-of-step with
the American people, should not be on the Supreme Court.
The nomination and confirmation of two justices with an inherent bias
against the Second Amendment is a direct assault on our treasured
freedom. The fate of our Second Amendment hangs perilously – by one
vote. The need for eternal vigilance on the part of every American has
never been greater.
