INTRODUCTION

Diabetes mellitus type 2, formerly called non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus

(NIDDM), or adult-onset diabetes is a disorder that is characterized by high blood

glucose in the context of insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. While it is

often initially managed by increasing exercise and dietary modification, medications are

typically needed as the disease progresses.

More than 246 million people in the world live with diabetes, about 20 to 50

percent of who are believed to be suffering from complications that lead to disability.

Without a concerted plan of fighting the disease, this figure will reach 380 million in the

next generation.

In 2005, an Asian-Pacific data ranked the Philippines as the fourth country with

the highest incidence of diabetes in Asia. Diabetes Mellitus affects around 3 million

Filipinos but only half of this population actually knows about it. Diabetes is a

manageable disease but it still is the 9th cause of death in the country since most diabetics

discover it too late and also due to the predisposing factors and precipitating factors that

affects the health.

The group chose Patient X as the subject of our case study because of two

reasons. First, his condition is very interesting. Secondly, he also has other concomitant

diseases like hypertension, cellulites that made this study more complex. And lastly, the

patient and his family are so much willing to participate in our study.

This study implies learning about the patient’s condition thus helping us student

nurses to be more competent and equip with knowledge and skills in taking care of a

patient having the same condition. To the nursing practice, this study will enable the

student nurses to be more capable in performing nursing procedures that are vital in

taking care of a patient having this type of health condition. In nursing research, it will

contribute in further understanding of the said illness and in line with this, creates more

competent student nurses and as well as registered nurses in the future.
