Give the students a diagram of a wave and ask them as a matter of review to label the parts of the

wave which were discussed in the previous lesson.

2. The Electromagnetic spectrum

λ progressing across the visible spectrum from red to violet, the wavelength

decreases and the frequency increases.

λ The color variation we see is simply the way our minds distinguish waves of

differing wavelengths.

λ Invisible waves can be found beyond both sides of the visible spectrum. We cannot

see these waves because God has not made our eyes sensitive to them.

a. Infrared Waves

= Those waves found immediately below red on the scale of

frequencies.

λ Infrared waves are particularly effective in stimulating rapid vibrations in

molecules.

λ We sense this increased motion as heat.

b. Radio Waves

Use Radio Tower Overhead

= Those waves found below infrared waves on the scale of

frequencies.

1) AM Band
 2) FM Band

3) VHF

4) UHF

c. Microwaves

Use Microwave Overhead

= Radio waves with the shortest wavelengths.

d. Ultraviolet

= Those waves found above violet (from the visible spectrum) on

the scale of frequencies.

- Fluorescent = A substance that converts ultraviolet light into

visible light.

e. X-rays

Use X-ray Overhead

= Those waves found above ultraviolet waves on the scale of

frequencies.

f. Gamma Rays

= The highest frequencies on the scale of frequencies.

IIIConclusion

Have students fill in handouts on the electromagnetic spectrum. Have the students orally respond

to questions about blanks on the handout.
